So I'm planning to retake my DAT around late june-early july and I am currently interning at a dental office (unpaid) 3x a week for about 4 hour shifts. I also wanted to get job training as a phlebotomist because I feel like I know more about the exam then the first time I took it and I want to try something new in my routine. The first time I prepared for the exam I only studied and did nothing else, as a result, I underestimated "all the free time" I had and would get distracted and not use as much time to study (literally time went by so fast), so I figured if I get a job it might help me build a better schedule instead of just being at home all the time. The phlebotomy training is a 4 week course (includes clinical exposure and exam prep) and I would have to take the certification exam. I wanted to start this some time this month or around May so that I could get my license by June and start working as well as have it on my application. Would this be a smart plan or would it be better to just wait until after my exam? I want to build a better schedule but at the same time I don't want to screw myself over. If anyone has had experience with this, please lmk!

I'd say to do it after you take the DAT, especially if you're retaking it because you must show improvement. Having an app with a phlebotomist cert + avg 2nd DAT does not look better than an app with an improved 2nd DAT in any situation → focus on the DAT.

As for a schedule, that's just self discipline. Try studying in different places, or for different periods of time. Try different strategies, or something like the pomodoro technique. Build good study habits now that will help you in dental school too :)
