Hi all!

I received this email about a week ago, and thought what better way to spread the news of this wonderful opportunity than to post it here!
It would give you the great chance of seeing what is required for the patient care portion of the NBEO - hope you can volunteer your time!

Key points:

  • The exam will take place in Berkeley, CA
  • Saturday, April 26th from 11:00 a.m. until 9:30 p.m.
    and
Sunday, April 27th from 7:30 a.m. until 12:00 Noon (TO BE CONFIRMED)
  • You would be compensated with $75 in Eye Center credits for each session. These credits are transferrable, and do not expire. You
can use them for any exam services or eyewear here at the Eye Center. Your account would be credited for $150 to $225.
Now, here's the e-mail

Dear Pre-Optometry Students:

Hello. I work with Dr. Revelli, the Associate Dean for Clinical
Affairs for the Eye Center at the UCB School of Optometry. Dr.
Revelli is also the Site Coordinator for the National Board's
Clinical Skills Examination (CSE-III) which will be held this Spring.

CSE-III is part of the licensure event for the Optometry students.
Every year, Dr. Revelli invites the Pre-Optometry Club members to sit
as patients for the National Boards. This is a tremendous
opportunity for future Optometry students to see what the experience
will be like.

The Spring exam will be held:

Saturday, April 26th from 11:00 a.m. until 9:30 p.m.
and
Sunday, April 27th from 7:30 a.m. until 12:00 Noon (TO BE CONFIRMED)

We never know until about 3 weeks before the exam as to how many
candidates have registered to take it at the Berkeley site. The
number of candidates determines how many patients we will need to
participate. Therefore, we might not be able to finalize our patient
arrangements until that time. You would need to reserve both days on
this weekend for us until we could confirm the dates of your
participation (which is most likely to be Saturday only). Dr.
Revelli gives preference to those patients who are able to
participate on both Saturday and Sunday because it provides
consistency for the exam candidates. If you are interested, please
reply via e-mail to me ([email protected]) and indicate if you
have already had an eye exam within the past year either here at
Minor Hall or Tang Optometry Clinic. Also, please provide a daytime
telephone number for our patient contact list. If you require an eye
exam, I will be happy to schedule you via e-mail, and Patient
Services will obtain the rest of your patient data at the time you
register for your appointment.

If you are interested in being a patient for the exam, please let me
know at your earliest opportunity. You will need to have had a
recent eye exam either at the Tang Optometry Clinic or Minor Hall Eye
Center. If you have not been seen within the last year in one of our
Clinics, you will receive a complimentary eye exam at Minor Hall in
order for Dr. Revelli to determine if he will be able to assign an
appropriate test station depending upon your visual acuities.

If you do need an eye exam, Dr. Revelli is providing an additional
unique educational experience for pre-Optometry students being
considered for National Boards: a special exam service called Team
Care which is delivered by a doctor and 4 students. The exam might
be slightly longer in duration (1.5 to 2 hours) because there is more
teaching and interaction amongst the providers. These appointments
are available only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and we would need you
to be examined by no later than the end of March. If you have
classes that interfere with your being scheduled for
Tuesdays/Thursdays, please let me know.

If you do sit as a patient for the National Boards, we want to make
you aware of the fact that you could be dilated more than once, and
contact lenses might be inserted repeatedly into your eyes. In other
words, you need to be comfortable with some physical contact. You
would need to stay here the entire time, and you would be served
lunch and dinner on Saturday. If we run the National Boards on
Sunday morning, we will have continental breakfast.

You would be compensated with $75 in Eye Center credits for each
session. These credits are transferrable, and do not expire. You
can use them for any exam services or eyewear here at the Eye Center.
Your account would be credited for $150 to $225.

We look forward to hearing from you. If you have any questions
regarding the exam process, Dr. Revelli will be glad to answer them
directly ([email protected]).

Thank you very much,
Tamara
