Do you guys think these are really optional or a very convenient way for schools to throw your application in the trash if you don't do it?

I always understood it as a way for you to explain some glaring flaw in your app should you need to. *shrug* i did'nt do it for BU

depends on the optional essay. there were some schools with optional essays that i felt were asking for some sort of disadvantaged status or something really unique...which i don't have or hasn't already been covered. I left them blank and still have interviews at those places.

some, like loyola's instructions to reference amcas if you've already covered it...you should really be writing something, at least for most of the questions.

don't leave the optional essay blank...there is always something you can let the adcom know. if nothing works...use other secondary essay prompts.
why are you intersted in the school
what do you have to offer to the entering class
diversity
URM
disadvantage
flaws in the application
what are your plans for the current year
