Hello All,

I think this is my first post. But I've recently been accepted to med school and am now thinking about financing. I've always been interested in military service but was wondering if I would have trouble being accepted for the various scholarships. About 8 years ago I went to rehab for substance abuse and haven't had any issues since but I did go through insurance with the rehab so it is on record. Is this something that will bar me from service?

Thanks for the help.
Such a question is only appropriate after you have decided that becoming an officer in the military is just as (if not more) important to you as is becoming a physician. HPSP should be viewed as an added benefit to joining the military and not merely as a means of paying for medical school.

There is a waiver process and you need to be honest. Security clearance will take a bit longer and they will specifically ask people who know about your past issues about those issues. I know a lot of people that came in on drug waivers, so it isn't unheard of... if you have any convictions, things will be more complex.
