Dr. Doan,
I'm not trying to put you on the spot or anything, but what did you honestly think about the curriculms you saw? Were you surprised at all, did you think anything was misssing?

I think the course work is extensive. I'm surprised to see so many basic science courses in the mix. I think one short fall is clinical experience, which can be enhanced by a one year post-graduate residency.

I think a one year residency will eventually be required for ODs. I think it would be a good idea.

I agree with this too. It's similar to medical students seeing patients during medical school vs working up/treating patients as an intern. The learning curve is VERY steep!

If optometrists are able to see 2000-3000 patients during a one year residency, then ODs should be comfortable enough to diagnose and medically manage most patients.

I'm only a 2nd year, but started seeing my own patients 4 weeks ago, basically we do the whole exam by ourselves, and just present to the doctor right before we dilate, and at the end of the DFE the doctor comes in and rechecks BIO and SL ophthalmoscopy. ..The 3rd years are already on rotations, so its just us 2nd years taking care of the patients. 🙂

Christy,

I was accepted to PCO but turned it down to move to Boston. could you tell me what Im missing (and not missing) at PCO?
---They told us on the tour at PCO that students start seeing patients their SECOND year....at NEWENCO, we will start seeing patients the 3rd day of classes!
thoughts?

p.s I took a tour of your Eye Institute at Elkins Park...and IT ROCKS !!

It's more like screening kids in the THIRD month at Newenco.

Anothertony,

At PCO we strart going to The Eye Institute the first semester of the 1st year. At that point we only neutralize glasses, and do automated stuff. Second semester of 1st year, we had to do VA's, histories, etc... First semester of 2nd year, we had to do VA's, histories, entrance tests, ret, refraction, SL ophthalmosopy, BIO, etc.. Second semester of 2nd year, we have full responsibility of patients..there is no one else in the exam room, just you and the patient, whereas all the semesters before we had upperclassmen in the exam room with us. So, we start seeing patients the first week of school at PCO, but we assume full responsibility of the patients second semester of the 2nd year. Hope that clears things up.
The Eye Institute is wonderful, b/c we see a wide variety of patients, many of them are glaucoma patients. This semester, oher then primary care, we are also in peds, glaucoma clinic, emergency, community-based (at public schools), etc... The one thing I love about PCO is that we start rotations in our 3rd year, so we won't be no longer in the classrom, we'll be out getting experience. Only 10 more months until I'm outta here! 🙂

christie,
it sound like you are very happy at PCO, with the curriculum and everything.....i bet its exciting to finally have your own patients....huh? without someone else watching your every move....
