For any of the senior people, any tips on studying for the oral boards? I want to retain whatever happens to be useful from my written boards so that I am not starting de novo when studying for the orals.

Any place we can find details on the format?

Thanks

I thought the orals were fun. I found them exceptionally easy, much more so than the written. I finished all 3 sessions with 15-20 minutes to spare and had pleasant conversations with the examiners. They were cordial and social and appeared they too were enjoying the exam.

I found out a few weeks later that two of my friends failed the orals and I could not fathom why. Until I heard them discuss the questions and the answers they gave.

1. Do not come off smug, cocky, arrogant, lazy, or unconcerned.

Both of the guys that failed made all of these mistakes. They just kept digging themselves in deeper. " I don't know for sure, but I believe this is the best course in this situation" can work well.

POSTING OLD ORAL QUESTIONS HERE IS A VIOLATION OF BOARD POLICY

Who is posting old questions? It's none of your business anyway. Just because you're done with orals doesn't mean others can't benefit from old concepts/questions tested. And you call your buddies smug, cocky..you're selfish!!!!

When you sit the boards, you will sign an affadavit stating that you will not share questions/concepts with colleagues, students, etc.
Posting on a public board with easily trackable names would not be such a smart move. Smug, selfish, and smart.

You want info- PM somebody.

You really think, this is trackable. One of the main reasons people post on here is for anonymity, ie. not being able to be tracked. Posting concepts breaks no law. It's not like anyone is selling copyrighted material.

You used an email address to sign up for the forums. If the ABPMR wants that email, they will get it. Then they get your name, address, program, etc.

EXAMINATION IRREGULARITY POLICY, NONDISCLOSURE POLICY,
AND COOPERATION AGREEMENT
ABPMR Examination Irregularity Policy
All American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR)
certication exams, including the content and wording of exam questions,
constitute condential ABPMR information protected by copyright law.
Any unauthorized receipt, possession, or transmission of ABPMR written,
computer-based or oral examination questions, content, or materials,
either before the examination, on-site, or after an exam administration is
strictly forbidden. Use of ABPMR examination materials for the purpose of
examination preparation or training is also strictly forbidden.
Violation of the ABPMR Examination Irregularity Policy and/or
Nondisclosure Policy and Cooperation Agreement, or the giving or receiving
of aid in any ABPMR examination, or engaging in other conduct that
subverts or attempts to subvert the examination or the ABPMR certication
process is sufcient cause for the ABPMR to:
■ Bar an individual from the examination and/or future examinations,
■ Terminate participation in the examination,
30 ■ Withhold and/or invalidate the results of the examination,
■ Withhold a certicate,
■ Revoke a certicate, or
■ Take other appropriate action.
The ABPMR reserves the right to take whatever measures are necessary to
protect the integrity of its examinations.
ABPMR Nondisclosure Policy
All ABPMR examinations are condential and protected by copyright law.
The examinations are made available to you, the examinee, solely for the
purpose of becoming certied or maintaining certication in the specialty
or subspecialties of physical medicine and rehabilitation. You are expressly
prohibited from disclosing, publishing, reproducing, or transmitting any
ABPMR examination, in whole or in part, in any form or by any means,
verbal or written, electronic or mechanical, for any purpose.
Acknowledgement/Cooperation Agreement
All examination candidates will be asked to sign an acknowledgement/
cooperation agreement agreeing to cooperate with any ABPMR investigation
of potential examination irregularities.
UNETHICAL OR IRREGULAR BEHAVIOR
Applicants for an examination must certify that the information provided in
the application is true and accurate, and must also agree not to engage in any
unethical or irregular behavior intended to subvert the integrity of the exam.
Examples of unethical or irregular behavior include, but are not limited to,
situations where:
1. any misrepresentation is discovered in the candidate’s application, in
any other information submitted to the Board, or in the identity of a person
applying to take or taking the examination;
2. any nancial or other benet is offered by a candidate to any director,
ofcer, employee, proctor, or other agent or representative of the ABPMR
in order to obtain a right, privilege or benet not usually granted by the
ABPMR to similarly situated candidates;
3. any irregular behavior during the examination such as copying answers,
sharing information, using notes, or otherwise giving or receiving aid is
discovered by observation, statistical analysis of computer-based testing
results, or violation of the ABPMR Examination Irregularity Policy,
Nondisclosure Policy, and Cooperation Agreement; or
4. the on-site proctor of the computer-based examination or the oral
examiner deems any portion of the candidate’s absence from the designated
examination room for whatever reason and any duration as unexcused or
otherwise impermissible.
31
If the ABPMR determines that unethical or irregular behavior has occurred
prior to, during, or after the examination, the ABPMR may permanently bar
the involved person(s) from all future examinations, invalidate the results
of or refuse to score prior examinations taken by the person(s), revoke the
certicate of the person(s), and/or take other appropriate action. If sanctions
are imposed pursuant to Board policy, the ABPMR may notify legitimately
interested third parties of its action. The person in question shall be given
written notice of the charges and an opportunity to respond in accordance
with rules and regulations of the ABPMR.
In the event of such a determination, the ABPMR will make every effort
to withhold the scores of only those candidates directly implicated in
the irregularity. In some instances, the evidence of irregularity, though
sufciently strong enough to cast doubt on the validity of scores, may
not enable the Board to identify the specic candidates involved in the
irregularity. In such circumstances, the Board may withhold the scores of
candidates not directly implicated in the irregularity and, if necessary, may
require those candidates to take an additional examination at a later date to
ensure the validity of all scores.
All examinations administered by the ABPMR are copyrighted as the
sole property of the Board and must not be reproduced or retained in any
manner. Any collection of administered test items, in whole or in part, is a
federal offense and also may subject the candidate to the sanctions listed
above. No notes, computer disks, textbooks, other reference materials,
scratch paper, or electronic devices may be taken into either the computerbased
or oral certication examinations.

I agree that it may not be wise to post about the boards on a public forum. But whether you people lose your medical license and/or board certification is not my primary concern- I want tips on how to study!

If anybody cares to share concepts with rehab_sports or ballsmd, please private message them. It would be recommended to not post information in a public forum. Please see post above.

There was a line of 20-40 people waiting for the first group of us when we finished the oral boards in Rochester last year. Everybody as asking about what was being tested. Several people caved in and the groups following us had a great advantage going into the test. This became evident to the testors. THis may have led to changes in the format of the oral boards, or to candidates being held to a much higher standard in regards to ethics and not sharing board content. So if you must, keep a low profile. Also consider who else is on this board. Some of the people who may be asking quesions might be reading this very thread....😉

Perhaps the solution is for those WRITING the questions to write new ones, rather than recycling the same ones year after year

There should be 100 questions for each year of the boards.
THat way when one group is done, the next group will not benefit from hearing about what was asked 10 minutes prior.
