Is it just me or is Oregon State U have really easy premed classes? All general biology & general chem exams consist of mutiple choice questions, organic chem & physics have many mutiple choice questions, not to mention simple questions. Now it makes sense why they get 3.8 gpa and 20 MCAT scores.

awesome post.

Are you taking the "non-majors" versions of these classes? I heard that those were relatively easy, but I didn't have the luxury of taking them being a ChemE major. I don't remember any multiple-choice questions on my o-chem tests, and physics with calc. was pretty killer. These were definitely "show all your work" type courses. (I ended up taking three years of math and one of the gen. physics with calc. courses was the only one I got a B in.) It's been a few years though, and things might have changed.

Do you go to Oregon State? I have a 3.5 and just recently took the MCAT with a practice score of a 28 from OSU.... interesting observation you have though!

I go to Oregon State...too easy if you ask me. Should have gone somewhere else. Many regrets here on my part for not seriously choosing a better university. I personally think the premed classes are designed to be easy to help premeds.

What? I go to a state school and I've never had a test in a science class with only multiple choice question. Not even in intro bio with 200 students. Cal Poly has an average of 3.58 and 30 for applicants. The pre-med classes are definitely not designed to be easy. I'm sure this is the case at other good state schools too, like Berkeley and UCLA. It sucks that all state schools get this stigma about GPA because of the fact that some are easy. I really don't know anything about Oregon schools though.

Wow, I am glad you are doing well in your classes, but what is your major? I was a biochem major at Oregon State and although I did well, it was because I worked my butt off! There wasn't anything easy about having 400 + students in my classes, professors that never knew your name despite going to office hours. I also never had all multiple choice tests, except in the freshman pre-med classes meant to "weed out" the serious students. Those tests would have at least 200 questions and you would get the standard 50 min to complete them. Not only that, the pre-med advisor is so harsh! I regret going to OSU for several reasons in retrospect, but not because it was easy. Enjoy it while you can.

200 questions! Woah, what class was that in? The only time I ever got anything with 200 questions was a survey in one of my classes.

Oregon State is the archetype of mediocrity in higher learning. Nothing bad about it per se, but it certainly isn't an academic powerhouse. I think it represents a perfect definition of "average."

I'm inclined to believe that the OP is not a science major, because I have never had a upper div. hard science course offer multiple choice tests. They have all been long essay/short answer/mechanism drawings etc.

And no, we don't all have 20 MCAT scores, either.

If I ever meet anyone from Oregon State University, I'll be sure to let them know how stupid they are.

I got a 37, so apparently some degree of learning is happening, for whatever that's worth. I generally agree with your assessment, though, that the school is average in most every regard. (Except that new library is awfully nice.) My upper-level engineering and chemistry classes were absolutely killer--significantly tougher than anything I've encountered in medical school--but the courses I took from every other department were virtually always no-brainers. I slid my year of general bio into my senior year, bringing me up to >20 credits a term, but it made hardly any difference at all, work-wise. Those were the easiest classes I've ever taken (and that's not because I'm a genius, the class was just a joke). I guess the thing to keep in mind is that even if you go to an average state school like I did, if you challenge yourself, find something rigorous and work your ass off, and don't just sort of drift through school, you can still go to whatever medical school you want. If you auto-pilot your way through cheesy classes then the MCAT will eat you.

I think UWGirl is just upset about the fact that she chose UW over OSU for her undergrad and couldnt handle the work load of UW and now has to crap on another school. Very surprised she didnt do it to my cougs...
