I am a freshman pre-vet student at Michigan State and I am planning my organic chemistry sequence for next year. Here at MSU, the 200-level organic chem sequence is 2 semesters of lecture (6 credits) and 1 semester of lab (2 credits). There is not an option to take a lab during the first semester of this. This is the orgo sequence that MSU CVM and pre-vet requirements say will be acceptable. There is also a 300-level orgo sequence with 2 semesters of lecture and 2 of lab (10 credits total) that is intended for chemistry majors.

My question is this: will two semesters of lecture and one of lab constitute "a year of organic chemistry with labs" as is required by most vet schools if this is MSU's system? Thanks!

I would call the schools and ask them, they may advise you to take the chemistry for chemistry majors course. I know at Penn State there is an Orgo lab course during only one semester (during Orgo II) but this one high-credit-hours lab is worth the same as two semesters of normal lab (I think it is 4 credits.) Many Penn Staters end up going to vet school taking this orgo lab, but I know most undergrad schools have a lab associated with both semesters, and your situation is a little different because the lab is a normal number of credits.

Good luck, and good job catching this potential problem before you actually took the course! 👍

Good luck with O-Chem. That class weeds out all the wanna-be pre-health students at my school.

My school did the organic sequence the same way that you're describing, with the required lab section associated with the 2nd ochem course.. I had no trouble with this. If you're worried, you could double check with the schools you're interested in, but I doubt you'll need to take the sequence for chem majors. Good luck!

My school also had the same sequence, with the 2 semesters of lecture and 1semester of lab. Since you may not know which schools you are applying to yet, you could probably just go with the one semester lab, since you are not a chemistry major. I just checked my Vet School Admissions Requirements book, and most of the school just specify "Organic Chemistry (with laboratory)." I have not seen one that specifies 2 semester of lab. The highest number of total OChem credits needed looks like 8, so make sure that both lectures and lab will add up to that. Good luck in OChem, it's not that bad as long as you like chemistry!

Hehe, I didn't like chemistry one bit until organic.

I worked SO hard in organic, but it was like learning a new language.

Too bad that after all that, though, I've started to forget so much.

The labs for organic were fun (to me).

Just make sure that non-major sequence gives you that 8 total credits of organic... I think most everyone wants 8.
