To anyone who thinks Organic Chemistry is evil....there is hope. I started off with a C and ended up with an A. How??? You may ask. By hard work! Talking to the professor during office hours, a lot of practice problems, and study groups. Anything is possible. Don't give up!

nice work, congrats. To those who can't understand why organic is still required for most medical schools, I would only say that it was for me the undergrad course most similar to med school basic sciences. Maybe not in content, but certainly in the thought processes and work ethic required to do well.

Well, I didn't know that. I guess I have to work hard to do well. I learn something new every day.

I liked Orgo better than the other pre-reqs, possibly because I had no exposure to it before college. You might be given two molecules you'd never seen before, but you could predict how they'd interact, and what their final product would be, just by their functional groups. It felt like I was solving puzzles, whereas Gen Chem just felt like a Plug n' Chug.

Plus I liked drawing stick figures.

👍

That's actually the best way to view orgo/ochem positively.

I felt the same exact way!

Especially since my 1 year of chemistry in high school was a total joke; literally didn't learn anything.. I felt like everyone in gen chem had a bit of an edge because they knew some fairly basic stuff that I was learning for the first time. So I felt like I was always a step back but Orgo is just something that no one has ever seen before so it's theres like a equal playing field. I honestly thought gen chem was more difficult lol, but I enjoyed orgo

Agreed; it has been my favorite pre-req so far. It's really interesting once you start practicing it.

I kind of like organic chemistry now that I'm done taking it. When I was taking it, it was by far my most hated class.

I have this kid, I guess I can consider him my friend, who constantly bitches about doing work. The thing is though, he is pretty smart. He took AP chem classes in highschool. He's lazy as dog **** though. He could've taken honors chem, but chose to let it go. Anyways, anytime our professor recommends doing something for an upcoming exam or test, he acts like it's the most ridiculous thing in the world.

Today, I said, "Man you're lazy as ****, wait until you get into a class that requires hard work, like orgo."

he replied "I know, but i'm a fast learner, I probably won't have to do much." I do agree with him that he's a fast learner, idk how orgo will be for him.

I guess I went on this rant to say,

I hate when bright kids bitch about working and then make a statement that they don't have to study much.

People with that attitude tend to get eaten alive in orgo.

Some people assumed I did well because I was "smart." No, I studied my *** off, and did the optional homework and practice tests. Also, when I finished an exam, I would reread the entire thing to make sure I didn't make a "stupid mistake," like misreading a question.

I loved the bold and dashed wedges. Some of those molecules were fun to draw/pretty dang cute!! 😛 (I realize how lame that sounds)

To be honest, I don't know why everyone thinks Ochem is so hard. I have a teacher who makes it his goal to make the class average between a 65-70 (which he always does), and I get high B's or A's on all of them. If you just study and do practice problems you'll do well!

The difficulties of orgo are often overstated.

It's pointless speculating how easy or hard ochem, or any other class, is. Everyone has a different professor. There are ways to make an ochem problem almost impossible to solve...
