So I'm beginning to study the Orgo section and I know there are a lot of reactions. I just needed some tips on how to study it. I plan on using Kaplan Blue book with supplement form my textbook. I also stumbled upon a website. Khan Academy which has a bunch of videos for the sciences and math. It seems really helpful and I might just rely on that as well. Does anyone have other recommendations? I'm too lazy to write out flashcard...

sap, invest into Chad's video's for a comprehensive outline and in the DAT Destroyer, which has Roadmaps (about 7 to 8 pages with reactants, reagents and products.) This should be good enough with KBB, since KBB already gives you a structure. But dont get lazy on flashcards unless you have a fantastic memory because you might forget the reactions (which there are a LOT of) and you will lose out on some easy points. Remember some shortcuts cost you WAY more in the long run. Trust me, I say that from a lot of experience lol

I was going to make a post on KBB's orgo section; it is not great. I found myself scoffing at their material half the time because of the many mistakes on important conceptual stuff.

I began my orgo review coming from a decently strong orgo background, and found ExamKracker's orgo book to be not only extremely clear and concise, but much more interesting to work through than KBB. It also includes a set of problems after each section, and we all know how important it is to practice problems alongside your review. After EK Orgo, I used KBB to make sure I'd covered all the reactions, but I started keeping a log of all the KBB mistakes!! For ex, in the Claisen, they don't even mention the final deprotonation between the carbonyls, which is the major driving force of the entire reaction....

I am glad I didn't use KBB as an initial resource; especially if you are pretty rusty on orgo...I'd go with EK Orgo first, then Chad + Destroyer!

I agree, use Chad's videos. His videos are very helpful, and if you can cover them in a month they are only $30. His quizzes are written a lot like the real DAT/Kaplan exams.

Follow up with Destroyer...this will fill you in on any holes. Some tests like Tollen's, iodoform, etc were not in Chad's videos but the Destroyer will cover them.

Some things Chad forgot: Baeyer-Villager oxidation (with peroxyacids), Diazonium salt usage, and Gabriel Synthesis. The Destroyer will give you examples of all of these.

I didn't study for OC as much as I studied for GC and BIO. I had a decent background in OC as well so for me, it wasn't too shabby. All I did was drill, drill, and drill (get it? 😉 ). It's all about practice

So do you think that chad left out many organic reactions? I've made flashcards of all his reactions but dont want to miss anything...

Is memorizing the road maps enough?
