With 250 ortho spot a year those odds would mean like 12,500 people apply for ortho every year, right?
All it takes is a couple of programs with crazy odds to skew the entire formula. And what's more, there are *more* than a couple of programs that are *really* tough to get into.
For example, say school A has a 4:1 applicant/acceptance ratio, and school B has a 50:1 ratio. If those were the only two schools around, and applicant numbers stayed the same, then applicants would have a 54:2, or a 22:1 chance of getting in. That is, for simplicity's sake there are 2 spots available and roughly 22 applicants for each one spot. That 22:1 ratio is MUCH poorer than the 4:1 that is actually presented by school A. Of course, it's also a lot better than the 50:1 ratio presented by school B.
