DDSanchez,

Thanks for the correction. It was even more competitive than I thought! I can see how the numbers are 50-100:1 for any particular program, but there's no way that can represent the true odds of getting into ortho. With 250 ortho spot a year those odds would mean like 12,500 people apply for ortho every year, right?

All it takes is a couple of programs with crazy odds to skew the entire formula. And what's more, there are *more* than a couple of programs that are *really* tough to get into.

For example, say school A has a 4:1 applicant/acceptance ratio, and school B has a 50:1 ratio. If those were the only two schools around, and applicant numbers stayed the same, then applicants would have a 54:2, or a 22:1 chance of getting in. That is, for simplicity's sake there are 2 spots available and roughly 22 applicants for each one spot. That 22:1 ratio is MUCH poorer than the 4:1 that is actually presented by school A. Of course, it's also a lot better than the 50:1 ratio presented by school B.

im not sure when they switched it but 1200=quant + verbal, and then you get a score out of 6.0 on your writing samples.
Thanks you and i wish you all the best

I don't really know where to find this information, so I would greatly appreciate any type of answers. Do all ortho programs require a GRE score or if GRE scores are only required for the really special programs?
Thanks!

PS. this is the only site that seems to be answering all of my questions.... thanks to everyone.

Pretty much half of them need the GRE. It is easy and I don't think it really matters that much, so just take it. If you get above 1200 you are money. I think it is just one of those things that can't really help you, but can hurt you if you do really low.

Congrats on making it this far, griffin. It looks like that GPR has *really* paid off for you in terms of gathering interviews. How much of your better application:interview ratio do you attribute to the GPR?

I think the GPR definitely made the difference in 2 of the interviews where the programs didn't interview anyone unless they had a GPR or private practice experience. I also think the GPR got me a "second look" at 2 interviews where the candidate pool was a 50/50 mix of dental school seniors and those who had already graduated.

All I really gathered from going through this process twice is that pretty much everyone that applies is probably qualified to make it through an ortho program. It's really just up to luck as to whether you'll get an interview and ultimately get accepted. My stats didn't change between last cycle and this cycle; all I did differently was graduate and start a GPR. Yet I got interviews at 4 places this year that I didn't hear anything from last year, although my classmates had all interviewed at these very same programs last year when we were seniors in dental school. I can't figure it out and I've given up trying. I seem to have been fortunate in getting interviews, now I just hope to be lucky in getting matched on Monday.
