If my GPA is sub 3.5 as a D2 currently, should I bother even looking into specializing in Ortho or is most of the hope lost? I am not a case where people tend to make exceptions. Just trying to get an idea about what is possible.

This. But if nothing works out, there are always expensive options like Georgia School of Orthodontics, though that should be your last resort.
