according to uworld:
"medial collateral ligament injury is associated with ABduction injury to knee. valgus stress test will help diagnosis."

"lateral collateral ligament injury...seen in ADduction injury to knee; varus stress test will hep...dx."

I'm a little confused about the naming convention. Are they saying AB/ADduction relative to the hip? Vaguely remember my anatomy professor saying something like this first year but then again I don't even remember what I did this morning so I don't really trust myself.

adduction injury means getting hit from outside the knee, injuring the lateral collateral ligament

I might be wrong, but I think they might be referring to the position of the knee after mcl injuries? If one is to get hit from the lateral aspect of the knee, the MCL would sustain the injury and cause laxity in the medial aspect of the knee...hence, vaLgus injuries, where one is hit from Lateral-->medial would cause this type of injury...think of the terrible triad...an athlete is hit on the lateral side of the knee causing acl, MCL, and MM rupture.
