My friend is a 4th year osteopathic medical student. She is wondering if it is possible to do a traditional osteopathic internship and then transer as a CA-1 to an allopathic anesthesiology program. In other words, do allopathic anesthesia residency programs recognize the osteopathic internship?

Thanks for any help.

It varies. Some will and some won't. It's best to contact the specific programs that spark your interest. Furthermore, they may say that they accept DO's after the internship year but in actuality they have never accepted a DO at all.

This also varies based on your part of the country.

I can't speak for all allopathic anesthesia residencies, but I've seen many residents go into allopathic anesthesia programs as second-years, after their one-year osteopathic internship. I've had friends do that at the program at Yale, and the University of California programs.
