For those applying to both MD and DO schools, or to anyone who would know the answer... What happens if you are accepted to an osteopathic school in January but are still waiting to hear from an allopathic school that is your first choice? Are you forced to put down the $1000+ non-refundable deposit that most of the osteopathic schools require, and then forfit this money if you are later accepted to the allopathic school? How does this work? That is a LOT of money to lay down for a non-refundable deposit.

You eat it. Simple. It is a way to protect DO schools from people that really only want them as a backup to another type of school.

I put down two deposits last year but thankfully they were in small deposits. I ended up putting the full deposit into NSU and waited to find out about the rest of my schools. I figured it was only right to put in the deposit since I was taking a seat over someone else they may have turned away.

I have heard of some getting their deposits back but only if you talk to the right people and explain your story well. One of my classmates got back his 2K from Touro when he got accepted to another school less than a month later.

DMU's deposit is refundable. Says so on my acceptance letter. 😀

Evo, are you sure about that? I just looked at mine and it says very clearly that admission deposits are non-refundable.

??

How much for NYCOM?

Yeah. It says so on my admission letter. Which in effect makes it a contract.

Really??? It states quite clearly in several places within the acceptance papers they sent me that the seat deposit is fully non-refundable. Right after that it says that if you withdraw before you start classes, all of your tuition and fees will be refunded-which 'could' include the seat deposit as the deposit is paid towards your tuition. However I doubt it does include the seat deposit because they made it so clear that it is 'fully non-refundable'. Am I missing something here, or do you have a different arangement than the rest of us? 😕

Whoops, I think I screwed up. 😳 You are correct. I understood it to mean that if I didn't matriculate then it would be refunded......

*sigh*

One can always hope...

One thing that's always interested me and that I find especially curious is the variation between the deposits in DO schools. For instance, WVSOM is said to be $3000, and NSUCOM is a couple thousand, and Touro as well. However, PCOM is a comparably meager $250 and MSUCOM is $500 including a $50 application fee.

It's just interesting how the fees vary. I wonder what determines this, private vs public affiliated school? Likely not as PCOM is private and MSU public, perhaps how established they are. Any insight? Just an interesting observation.

It frustrates me that they ask so much. I would send in a $100 but the $1000 is just too much. In my case, it hurts the D.O. schools b/c I would prefer to go that route but since I haven't decided, the huge deposit is helping me make a few decisions. I've already written several to discontinue my acceptance. I've narrowed it down to two schools. We'll see.

NYCOM's is $500 (for now). Just got my acceptance letter yesterday and they give u about 3 weeks to cough up the $$. Then another $1000 is due sometime in the spring.
You wouldn't by any chance know if NYCOM offers deferments would you? I tried calling today, but no one's picking up the phone at admissions. I am doing research at the NIH right now and am thinking I may need to defer if they allow it so I can finish up my work - which I don't know I can do by 9/05. 🙁

Hey, congrats on NYCOM! I have the 500$ due by Jan 21st, and would love to know if you find out about any possible deferment or whatever. though I doubt its possible, it would be very nice 😀

congrats to you too! did you interview on dec 16th? because I saw you're from rochester and other interviewees there that day were from rochester, too so just curious if i remember you. Anyway i'm going to try calling NYCOM again tomorrow and i'll let you know. if they don't allow deferments, heck forget the NIH - i'm still gonna send them my $$ (mine's due the 21st too) deposit.
take care 🙂

Touro gives you two weeks to give 2000 and requires another 1000 a few months later. Good thing is that we do get it back in the fall in the form of overpayment of financial aid.

Hi. I interviewed on Wednesday the 15th. I wonder if I know the people from Roc who interviewed with you. Ah well. Just curious about your comment about NIH, are you hoping to stay there? Are you in the PostBac program? :luck:

Yup, I'm in the postbac program at the NIH. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy my research but I do not want to risk losing my spot at NYCOM just to stay a few months more at the NIH. I just don't think that is practical or wise. Plus, research is not what I want to do forever... obviously otherwise why would I have applied to medical school. The NIH is my second experience in a research lab and I guess I would be happy ending in a year and moving on, that's all. 🙂

for anyone in this situation.... I spoke with someone in admissions from NYCOM this morning asking about whether they allow deferrments for accepted students. she was like why? i explained my situation and they will "consider" it after i write a letter to the director of admissions. don't know how long they take to decide because deposit deadlines are at the end of jan.
