I am currently applying to both DO and MD schools and at the end of the day, just want to go to a med school where i am comfortable, happy, etc. The only concern i have is that i dont truly believe in osteopathy...I have spoken to various DOs and MDs, and they both tell me that hardly any DO believes in osteopathy, so i shouldnt worry bout it. Should i???

If you believe or do not believe that is up to you. Nowhere does it state that you must believe in the DO philosophy to attend a DO school.

I don't understand your concern. Do you believe in drugs? Do you believe in surgery? What's to believe? There's research that shows osteopathic manipulative techniques are just as effective or even more effective than some drugs. Other research shows some techniques aren't effective. Use what works and don't worry about the rest. It's not a matter of "belief" because the evidence is there.

You can still goto DO school without believing the osteopathic philosophy. There are people that do believe them too. If you don't feel comfortable, I suggest you don't goto DO school.

From what I've read, I will not be appreciating cranial training.

However, I am open to other methods of manipulation that have been proven effective. Will OMM cure everything? No. But, it will be a tool that you may choose to use for some things.

You don't have to be all gung-ho about everything in OMT. Remember that the vast majority of your training will be "traditional". Just look at any DO school curriculum.

Also, remember that many people benefit from chiro, and that many physical therapists are interested in manipulative techniques due to it's efficacy. So, manipulation works for some things.

Just look at it as some additional training in such techniques, which is what it is.

Osteopathic medicine has always focused on preventative medicine and a general holistic approach to healthcare. But, DO's do not have a monopoly on this. So, it's up to you to practice the way you wish.

As a physician, you will not always agree with an approach to "traditional" medicine either. You may have a different view based on your own beliefs and values. So, OMT will not be the only area in which you'll need to sort things out in the future, for yourself.

Yeah, Im open to OMM but I know Im going to have trouble with cranial.

How would you feel about taking 200 hours in OMM which will compete with hours to study Anatomy, Biochem, etc.? It would suck. You say you want to go to med school that will make you happy - but you don't believe in osteopathic medicine - nuff said.

actually, I would think that OMM priniciples would definitely help reinforce anatomy concepts and perhaps physio, etc....

So, even if you don't use an ounce of OMM in your practice of medicine, it will help with a more solid understanding of human anatomy. Also, you will be more comfortable touching, examining and handling a patient than a pure M.D. education
