OSU-COM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was complete approx 30ish days ago.

The video is about a ******* journalist that attacked an OSU football player personally in her column. Coach Gundy got ahold of the column and spent approx 12 minutes trashing her in every way imaginable. I've read the column and it's crap. The funny part is she just can't figure out why people are upset. He's an amateur athlete and she's taking personal shots at him, gimme a break. You can tell it pissed me off being a former college athlete.... 👎

You're my hero BB! LOL I'm actually becoming obsessed with staring at my phone hoping it will ring.....I just desperately want ONE of the spots sometime in November...that is when 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round take place!! Gosh that would be amazing!!!!!!!
Mine was "complete" Aug. 30th!!!!!!!! What the hell?!?! HAHA I'm a little impatient if you can't tell!! 😉

it appears that there are a couple of interview dates already, oct 23 and 25 are these just first round or is the first date the first round, and second date second round?

The press conference is one of the greatest things ever. I think it is fantastic that the coach is willing to stick up for his kids like that.

Mack Brown polled his team when that came out. He told everyone who thought that was a good thing for Gundy to do to raise their hand. The whole team did. I agree completely.

But its still a funny clip.

SAYLORSDAD
Second round is the WEEK of November 12th and the third and 4th rounds are the last two weeks of november. I am pretty sure they consider that week a "round" so all these interviews so far are first round

If you fit a certain GPA and MCAT score, plus have gone through OSU's Honors College you are "guaranteed admissions" (a few more technicalities I'm sure, but that's basically it - check their website).

That is news to me. Pretty interesting though. I was only skeptical because of how many untruths get posted on here on a daily basis.

As far as the number of admitted students for next year, I asked yesterday and they said it is still undecided as if it will be more than 88. But if I hear otherwise I will try and post.

Yikes! 60% of residents get interviews (151/248), compared with 6% out-of-staters (48/827)!

To all those OSS applicants out there do not lose hope because interviews do happen! I am from nowhere around Oklahoma and just received an interview today for November 13. I know OSU is a killer school but my dilemma is I have schools that already accepted me, some with significant scholarships! Can those who are familiar with this school tell me some outstanding points about this school. I know that the class size of 88 is really appealing to me! Thanks everyone in advance for your input!

Its a great city to live in, with plenty of suburban areas to spread out in if you're not a city person. The school itself has a beautiful campus and the family feeling is heavy in the atmosphere. The pass rate for the boards is 99% and there are many scholarships availiable. One key thing I hear about OSU over other schools is that the interviewers look at you as a whole (who you are, why you're here, etc) along with your gpa, test scores etc instead of just at your test scores and gpa.

First round of interviews run from Oct 23 to Nov 6th according to the lady I talked to.. Sara Quinten I think?????

Man I just love Tulsa. It's growing at a substantial rate. Property values are increasing. It's easy to live in a rural or suburban environment and not be an hr from school. Not to mention OSU has some pretty impressive stats. I've met and worked for 2 alumni of OSU-COM and they are both among the best physicians that I've ever met or worked with...

Congrats on the interview invite.

I know the current class size is 88, however they have reported that they are going to increase class size to around 110 "I think I heard 112" in the next couple of years. There seems to be a question of how many they will accept this year.

OMG I went around OSU-COM yesterday for the first time and it's AMAZING!!!! I absolutely LOVE it and am SO on fire about hopefully going there. Tulsa is pretty amazing too!!!!! The students were SUPER nice!! I have never met people this nice before. They have ALOT of fun, too.....playing sports and things to take the edge off. I ran into a couple friends from high school and one from my undergrad. Apparently they just finished their first test block and all have that "I hate life" attitude!! LOL! They were like "are you SURE you wana do this??" I can completely understand though...adjusting to studying like that would take time. If you have never visited the school, I HIGHLY recommend it!!!

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Myo!

I hope everyone has a great week!

Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!
I Am Interviewing At Osu-com On November 16th!!!!!!!!! I Am So Freaking Excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sent you a PM MYO.

Congrats! To those who go on the first day (the 23rd?) try to get your questions posted asap for those who go on a later date. (Like the 24th 😀)

HAHA NO JOKE!!!!! I've never been so nervous in my life!!! I need to know what they ask!! 🙂 Just kidding...I know they can ask you ANYTHING

To all those who got interviews so far, or are expecting them, what kind of credentials do you have? (gpa, completed coursework [bachelors], related job experience, EC's [volunteer, research] etc.)

The reason I ask is I have been pushing my way through college at a fast pace (graduated high school in '06) and will be elgible to apply this summer for the fall 2009 class.
So far I have completed 62 hours with a 4.0 and the only required classes for OSU I have left are organic 2 and physics 1&2 which will be done this during this spring and over the summer. Other classes I'm taking are related to obtaining my B.S. in Health with biology minor include biochemistry, genetics, histology, human phys, and some other misc classes. I am currently working as a pharm tech [i was previously a pharmacy student] and am trying to find a more health related job and I have shadowed two DO's, have one on my fiances side of the family, and have about 20 hours of hospital volunteering.

DUDE!! You are SO on the right track!!! Just keep it up!!!! I am nothing special...just EARLY APPLICATION IS KEY!
I am 21 years old (just turned in august) I have a 3.83 GPA, 3.70 science GPA. I am a forensic chemistry major and I will graduate in may. I have about 100 hours hospital volunteering...minimal doctor shadowing....4 years of biomedical research, secretary of the Tri Beta biology club, first time I took the MCAT I got 21 (7,7,7) and the second time I got a 23 (9,6,8) REALLY lood letters of recommendation.
You are already beating me in a couple areas and you have a ways to go!!!! You have nothing to worry about...just spank the MCAT cuz its a B***h!

By the way, I see EDMOND on your thing!! I go to UCO in Edmond! Do you happen to go there???

Nah I go to Southwestern OK State because I was originally pre-pharmacy, but I would technically graduate after fall of 2009 with my BS in Health and a minor in Bio. You have any ideas of any jobs around the edmond/north okc metro that would relate to the medical area and be applicaple towards experience? BTW I am from edmond originally, a graduate of Santa Fe and also the city I was borned and raised in.

Um...not really sure of any jobs. I am originally from Durant, Oklahoma (where southeastern Oklahoma state university is) so I still don't know that much about edmond. You would probably know more than me. You're doing great, just keep it up!!!! Don't stress so much!!!!

Oh, AND THANKS ALMO!!!! You're my girl!!!!

I just saw you had the biomedical research job and thought you might know of something simular. Thanks anyways.

OH!! That!!
Well, I'm employed through UCO and I have what is called a "Research Assistantship"...I do research for the professor and get paid by the school. I just got really lucky my sophomore year and got in REALLY good with a professor and he offered it to me and I've had it ever since. They are few and far between, though. If you just go to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) or the OU Health Science Center they are ALWAYS looking for lab techs. If you can get a lab tech spot, you may be able to advance to your own project. I know a couple of my friends that are lab techs there. That is probably the best way. Or SERIOUSLY think about a summer undergraduate research program. I know there is one called SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) through the OU Health Science Center. I was in INBRE last summer and its amazing. Two months of full time research and they pay you $2000 a month and give you 3 hours of upper division biology credit. Pretty sweet deal. Not as many people apply as you may think so I would definitely look into it!!!!!!!!! Let me know if I can help you with anything else!

That sounds like an awesome research position. I have the same deal with ECU, but mine is Environmental Research. I still really enjoy it though. It's been a great experience. Sadly, half of the funding for the program just got cut, so there are only 10 spots now! (there used to be 30!). I'm just lucky I found this job when I did.

With that INBRE thing, do they give you a place to live? That sounds SWEET! 👍

With INBRE I don't believe they give you housing because of how much money they pay you...however, in the SURE program, they do accomodate housing arrangments and the catch is that they only pay you $1500 a month instead of INBRE's $2000....but if you think about it, that takes care of the housing because I'm sure it would cost more than $500 per month to stay somewhere

Yeah! fo sho! That sounds awesome!

I found the www.okinbre.org website and I see under "for students" all the summer information, but for the life of me I can't find the application files. How do I go about applying for it?

I was able to find all the applicable information for SURE though.

for those of you that have been contacted, what time did osu contact you for interview?

I also heard that they were predicting an increasing in class size from between 5-10 students this year "93-98 students".

still waiting on phone call,

Don't Worry, Saylorsdad! I KNOW you will get that call!!! Just hang tight...it's still really early. It's easier said than done, though. Everyone on here told me that I would get the call and I didn't believe them, but sure enough, it comes. I was contacted yesterday at about 2:45pm. I'm not sure about everyone else. I was given the choice between November 13-16th. I chose the 16th because it is a Friday and we are out of school so it worked out a lot better.

Mine was also around 3ish in the afternoon.

That's AMAZING!!! I'm so glad to know some other obsessive person from SDN is going to be at the interview the same day!! HAHA!!! I always have this weird fear that the hour and a half you are waiting for others to interview, everyone just kinda stares at each other with this awkward silence going on....HAHA That is not gonna get me in the mode to interview! Man, I want the time to prepare, but I also want it to come quick so that I can get an acceptance letter!! 😉 or maybe a waitlist....just NO REJECTIONS!

First off, Congrats to everyone who has an interview and for those who don't, itll come!

Now yet another question from me, lol, I am planning out my application for OSU-COM and I am looking at testing dates for the MCAT. My plan thus far is to take the MCAT April 19th and then May 31st if necessary. This would allow me to apply pretty early since aacomas starts on june 1st.

My question is when did everyone apply and how late is still "early?"

I took the May MCAT, and was complete by june 11. My supplemental was complete around the same time, along with all l.o.r.'s. Everyone says that early is better, but still waiting on phone call......

That was very early... you might want to call them and double check on the status of your application. Mine was complete like three weeks ago. I was very shocked to get the phone call (I thought they were calling to tell me something was wrong with it).

That is a pretty good timeline to keep. I took the May 31st MCAT, but didn't complete my stuff until I had my score back and felt that it was good enough. Try to have all your LOR and the supplemental in as early as possible. Good luck..

Yeah, I think you are doing good!!! I took the May 16th MCAT and it was crap but I applied anyway....then I took it again on August 16th and just updated my application with my new scores. I was originally considered "complete" by August 31st. Sarah called this morning and she accidentally scheduled me on STATEHOOD DAY...(all of us, including osu com is out of school for the centennial) so I had to rescheduled.....I was given the choice to go the week later or take any of the three days before so I took the earliest possible! Now, I'm interviewing on the 13th.....Less time to prepare but I'm pretty excited!!!!!!!!! I talked to my pre-med advisor this morning. Apparently, they have your personal statement and everything about you EXCEPT your MCAT and GPA scores........so it's "closed file". I really like that idea because the MCAT is definitely my weak point. Man.....gettin' excited now!!! I have to figure out a way to keep focused on my classes.

yes I am complete, have contacted them ~10 times to be sure.

My stats aren't the best 23 mcat 7ps 7bio and 9vr "taken before I had chemistry 1, 2, organic 1, 2, and biology 1,2".
I have a masters in education, and am high school science teacher "physical science and physics, am now teaching biology 1st year for that though." I will be complete all pre-req's prior to the next school year. I am pretty sure that I am behind other students that have taken the traditional route to med school.

I wouldn't say you are behind. I'm 25 and just now applying. I did work in a healthcare related field, but I went back and pretty much restarted from scratch in 2005. Without alot of experience and a 23 on your MCAT you will probably need a pretty high gpa (3.55 ~ 4.0) and good LOR. Without those you may consider taking a year to build up your app some. Hope it goes well..

You crack me up Myo.. you still have a MONTH!!!! Relax and forget about it for awhile jeez.. The more you think about it the slower the time will creep bye.....😉

HAHA Can you imagine my ethusiasm in real life??? HAHA I just stay excited generally about all kinds of stuff and I gotta take it down a notch. REALLY cool thing happened today. My biochemistry professor has been on a lot of commitees before, even the med school commitee to interview people and she said about a week before, she will sit down with me and have a mock interview. That will help me SO much!!! Everyone is being super supportive. LOL I will relax and take my mind off of it for a while. I have so much homework, I'm gonna have to......I really need to block myself from this website and facebook but that just isn't gonna happen!! LOL!

yeah I was accidentally scheduled for Nov. 16th too... Now I'm scheduled for Nov. 15th, which ended up working out ok, since plane tickets are actually cheaper for then. So now I have ~$40 credit for Southwest Airlines for future use!

GL to all of yall, I just got done filling out all possible areas on my aacomas application other than my personal statement. I can't wait to start applying next summer.

Same here! I'm ready to get this show on the road, if ya know what I mean.
