OSU-COM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
HAHA ALMO just tried to keep the OSU-COM discussion thread going by posting random things in order to bump the thread so people will see it!! LOL I love her for that!!!!

Honestly, I can probably count on one hand all the OSU-COMers that have been talking on this thread.....where in the world are all the Oklahoma people?????? A lot of my friends applying to OSU don't even know about this website!!! SPREAD THE WORD PEOPLE!! It's amazing!!!!

So, I am super proud of myself......I have been listening to NPR like crazy and reading the CNN.com headlines everyday. I feel extremely informed! haha!

Didn't Oklahoma State have a higher average GPA and MCAT for its incoming class one year than University of Oklahoma? I think I read that around SDN somewhere, where a couple of residents were arguing (one chose OSU overr U. of Oklahoma because he felt OSU was the better school). If this is true, I'd assume OSU most likely has the highest GPA/MCAT combo of all osteopathic med schools. Congrats to anyone who gets in.

Thanks , Myo! I'm really excited! I'm heading up to OSU's Stillwater campus today to spend some quality time with friends I haven't seen in ages. I can't wait!

Anywho, I'm proud of ya, Myo! You're going to kick butt in that interview!

So in my quest to not be a jerk and a thread derailer, I'll just say no and leave it at that. If you really want to know, check out unbiased sources like USNews to get average MCAT/GPA data or pm me.

No, but I deleted my post in the other thread because it was out of place. According to the latest USNews data and actually all the recent data, OU has had higher MCAT/GPA scores than OSU. When I applied, COMP had the highest MCAT scores of any osteopathic school, and TCOM usually has the highest average scores. With the latest USNews, it looks like DMU actually has a higher average MCAT than OSU.

Not jumping in to hate on OSU, but I don't like mistruths being spread about my school. If you're curious, check official data and don't base your assumptions on statements on SDN. And yes, that includes my statements, too.

Yeah, but like I said, one year I heard they were higher. I didn't say this year, or last year necessarily. If we could get the data from the past 5 or so years, then we could prove or disprove what I said. Since it was a resident who claimed OSU had a higher MCAT/GPA than University of Oklahoma, I'm assuming he was talking about their scores from 4+ years ago.

I did some checking. According to the school, the MCAT was higher in the class of 2008 and potentially 2009's class. The GPA's in those classes were not higher but just under OU's averages.

And if you don't want to jump into the OSU threads, then don't. I don't see too many malcontents jumping into the OU threads since the EM and residency debacle thread about 2 years ago.

Actually the data I'm working from is from the class of 2009, so no, their MCAT score wasn't higher. I also looked at USNews last year, which would be 2008's data, and again didn't notice a higher MCAT at OSU. I'll trust USNews over information from OSU's admins.

I'll add that no one at my school spends their time telling us how "superior" we are to the other school in Oklahoma. Heck, that's one reason why I decided to go there. My interview day at OSU was full of OSU students telling me how much OU sucked, but all the people at OU only had nice things to say about OSU.

I will concede that OSU does kick our butts on the boards. Apples to oranges and all that stuff, but it's clear something good is happening there in the basic sciences years.

Hey, if someone's got it, I'd love to see it.

Here's the only information that OSU shares on their website.

I remember where I read it now: http://drslounge.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=449505

See JayneCobb's posts.

Given his post history, there's no reason for me to believe he is trying to mislead people by lying. I believe he got into both OU and OSU, and I also doubt he'd attend OSU over OU unless he felt the school was stronger (which many people correlate with admissions standards, right or wrong). But like you said, there is no data to confirm or disconfirm what he said. I didn't want this thread to get hijacked, just congratulate people getting onto OSU, which I've heard is one of the best DO schools, if not the best school in the state (which is a matter of one's opinion, obviously).

I agree, though, let's leave it at this and say that OU and OSU are both great schools; good luck everyone who interviews at OSU!

True. I don't think anybody's lying. I just question the data, and yes, get bugged when it's stated that OSU is clearly superior or whatever, which seems to have popped up a few times recently. My school's a good place, and my classmates are smart, nice people. I just feel like my education is being stomped on when people make unsubstantiated statements like that.

Gotcha. Hell, I'd go to OU in a second (if they'd accept me:meanie:). Of course, I'm sure they favor IS applicants or those from the surrounding area, in which case a New Yorker such as myself probably wouldn't get in without a ridiculously high GPA/MCAT to begin with.

You could always move to Oklahoma and establish residency. It's so scenic and all. 😉 Seriously, though, Oklahoma's a good state to live in if you want to get into medical school.

Adding that I don't know if they care at all about surrounding areas and whatnot. I think I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but state schools generally want to admit as many oos people as the state legislature allows them to. And the state legislature doesn't care where you're from if it's not Oklahoma.

Nice to see some new faces in the thread lol. I am actually a hardcore OU fan at sports, but when i visited both campusses and talked to faculty and staff from both, OSU came off as far more apealing which is hard for me to admit as i still bleed crimson and cream.

I, too, think it is entirely a personal choice. I can honestly say, I would be in a very tight spot if I was accepted to OU and not OSU. I have done research at the OU Health Sciences Center and volunteered at their medical center for over a year having many opportunities to be around residents and medical students and can honestly say I can count the number of nice people on one hand. A couple med students would go out of their way to be rude to me for no reason. I guess just because I was a pre-med....I don't know. That is besides the point. This wasn't just one occasion.....every time I was there, no one would hardly speak to me and pretend I wasn't there just because I was a lowly volunteer. When I would go on rounds with the med students and residents, I got bad looks because I wasn't one of them yet.
However, when I shadowed/volunteered at a hospital that had a lot of OSU residents and med students, I had a COMPLETELY different experience. Not only were they the nicest people I have ever met, they would go out of the way to ask who I was and make sure I felt welcomed. From touring the school, I get a sense of togetherness and family at OSU....Medical school is HARD and everyone helps everyone. I feel at OU it is more "every man for himself" type of thing.
That is the main reason I want to attend OSU. Keep in mind THIS IS ALL MY OPINION and from my own experiences. I don't mean to bad mouth OU whatsoever. Maybe I just happened to be around the wrong people at the wrong time, I don't know. Every school is going to have good people and bad people. I gave OU a lot of chances and it just isn't somewhere I want to get my medical education. I could care less about the difference in title. I really felt at home at OSU and I hope to God I get in there.
PLEASE do not be offended by this post. I just wanted to share my experiences and why I would much rather attend OSU to OU. I think the level of education is VERY similar....it's simply the type of people difference for me.

Thanks for your opinion. I'm sure everyone is mature enough to realize it's just your opinion, and not gospel truth. Good luck, I hope you get into both (although it seems you have you mind semi-made up about which you'd choose).

All of the OU people I've met haven't been the nicest people. However, one of the doctors I shadowed graduated from there and he was super nice! So, I don't know. I don't think I have enough experience to have an opinion. lol.

Have a great week, guys!

Is anyone getting nervous about the approaching interviews? :scared:

Thanks, Dr.MOM!! You always make us feel better!! And yes, no matter how much I tell myself that the OSU interviews are usually laid back, I am still VERY nervous!!!! FOUR WEEKS AND COUNTING!!!

Gah, I know I have a while to interview, or even till next semester, but I am so stressed about my coursework for this spring. Human anatomy, Organic 2, Pathophysiology, and Physics 1 all in one semester along with the MCAT that April and/or May...

Just though i'd share my stress since you shared yours!

I feel your pain. Next semester will be a light load for me [Physio+Micro+Gen Eds+MCAT]. But next fall I'm taking Biochem, Histology, Ecology, and Cell & Molec. The following spring I'm taking Genetics, Botany, Immunology, Embryology and a seminar. Fun stuff! By then I should have applied, and if I have an acceptance by Dec I just have to make C's. So, yes I'm putting all my eggs in the "acceptance basket," but oh well. Graduating in 3 years sucks! :meanie:

Well the interview fastly approaching (10/23) and I'm feeling a bit queezy as expected, but not overly devestated yet.. 😉 When I get home on Tues evening (maybe wed) next week I'll log on and tell you guys all about it. How important are the 4 tenets of D.O. to OSU interviewers?? anyone know? I know there are still a few that ask about them at KCUMB....

HAHA I just messaged you on facebook wondering how you were holding up!!!!!!!!
I have four weeks to go and I can't think about anything else!! Dude, you are going to do amazing!!!! Obviously, I haven't interviewed yet, but I would think when they ask "WHY DO?" just be honest.......WHY do you want to be an osteopathic physician. I've heard they love the holistic approach, the body is a while organism thing, etc but don't say any of that stuff if you don't mean it. There has to be something that wanted you to go there so bad and become one of them. I'm going with extreme honesty. I'm confident that listening to NPR religiously and really evaulating what I am doing here will have me set for the big day.

Cobb --> thx, I had heard a few die hards still ask that here and there around the country...

Myo --> ya I read your facebook msg, but for some reason my profile keeps freezing and won't let me respond.. Everythings good, just prepping here and there. Right now I'm cramming some serious Hemoglobin, myoglobin, and Michaelis-Menten Kinetics for a test this afternoon in Biochem. NPR is pretty great. I listen to the OSU channel out of Stillwater all the way up here. 🙂
Everyonce in awhile I get sidetracked about the whole being a physician and/or DO. Usually I have to go in to our clinic, meet some people, do some presentations to attendings, that kind of thing to get my head back into it. Its easy to get sidetracked when all you do is study, study, study. But this clinic allows me to help and treat people at such an early stage it really helps to keep you hungry to get into medicine... Hope all goes well with the classes and I'll get on here and post my interview after it happens..

My facebook has been acting up too, must be something with facebook itself. Oh well... I am still waiting to hear back from some docs i might get to start shadowing in a few weeks.

Alright OSU-COMers!!!! This thread is starting to die and we can't let that happen. What is goin' on with you guys this week>?????

I am still taking the PCAT tomorrow for two reasons, ill have a fallback if i screw myself over for med school, and also because it was too late to get a refund when i decided to switch to pre-med, lol.

Physics II exam on Wednesday, Organic II exam the following Friday. Yuck!!!

I'm ready for my MCAT course to begin, so I can start studying already! [Jan 19th].

I guess that's all that's going on. How about you, Myo?

Im deciding if I should take my first MCAT in January before I have any college level physics (i took physics in highschool in my junior year), but I dont want to severly screw up... I've done really well on the PCAT but what kind of physics questions does the MCAT actually consist of?

Well, my first MCAT had a ton of physics I and my second one had a ton of Physics II....just really can't ever tell. All I know is I still can't understand physics to this day and I will be happy if I never see it again. It's rough, though. If you have the extra $210 to spend, it wouldn't hurt to take it and see in my opinion.
Not much is going on with me. I can't stop thinking about that interview, it is driving me nuts! School is fine this week.......Research Day is Friday and I am presenting at that. Have an experimental biochemistry midterm on thursday that i am NOT looking forward to!!!!!!! Other than that, just getting a few things done here and there.

WOw.. Well I've been in KC for o about 2 hrs now and our car got hit in an intersection by some ******* running a red light. He spins his car and takes off, obviously with no insurance. KCUMB will REALLY have to sell some serious stuff for me to ever consider living in the hell hole that is Kansas City. Just thought I'd post that and to say Hey to everyone!!..

hows your car? sorry about the incedent, I'm just dealing with the weather here in okieleahomea! lol weird way to say it.

On another note, a previous note, I have the latest examkrackers and kaplans MCAT stuff and I may start teaching myself physics so I can have alot of it down and ready for january if i decide to take it then.

well the car is driveable, so thats good. Now if I can just figure out where the building is that the early morning breakfast is in I'll be good to go. I hope some of the KCUMB guys get on to their thread and reply soon or in the morning... I'm about to go relax in the Harrahs casino hot tub.. 😉

MAN, BB! Kansas City today, OSU-COM tomorrow?? That's hardcore!!! I've been thinking about your interview all day because I know it's coming up SO FAST!!! You are going to do great. TOOOOOMORRROWWW!! 🙂 It sounds really weird, but I have put all nervousness aside and I am SUPER excited about it. All I did was spend an hour last night reading the comments people have made about their interviews on the feedback starting from the very first entry and 99% gave the same advice....it was an amazing experience and they wish they would have known beforehand that there is NOTHING to be nervous about. I just wanna live in Tulsa because I HATE Oklahoma City (especially EDMOND). A change would be nice!!!
Anyways, don't worry about the car incident...people are douchebags. I am just glad yall are ok!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!

fyi, okc and tulsa arnt that much different, and in essance, tulsa is worse. Okc only has edmond... Tulsa has both broken arrow and jenks (worse than edmond) and it has catoosa and other smaller suburbs (like midwest city, bethany, etc). Now I do admit that I will have alot of motivation to put up with it if I am in med school!

Phlame, you're the first person I've run across who've thought that OKC & Tulsa were similar. Most people I've run across have a pretty clear preference for one over the other.

0350408, sorry about the MVA. Hope your interviews go smoothly.

HAHA Yeah, I've NEVER heard anyone say they are similar. OKC is fine....Edmond just sucks. It's just a culture shock for me. I'm from a VERY small town that welcomes everyone, even if they don't know you. People wave at you passing you on the street or say hello even if they have never seen you before. In a bigger town or city it is completely different. I don't care if Tulsa is similar to OKC, it's not Edmond.
The education I am getting at UCO is bar none, though, so it's a small price to pay.

0350408--maybe I'll get bored tomorrow & head over to the school to return some library books. if I do, I'll go to the interviewee holding room (😉). no promises as to heading over to the school, but if I'm at the school I *will* come over.

I'm heading up to Tulsa in 2 weeks with my Dad. It's license renewal for Chiropractors...but I'm going to check out the OSU-COM campus/hospital. I went last year too, and I thought Tulsa was easy to get around. I'm directionally challenged, so I thought it was a lot different than OKC. I run scared when I hear that I have to travel North of Moore. :scared:

Good luck to those that interview tomorrow! And be sure to update on SDN asap for those of us (!!) that interview on Wednesday...

North of moore (south side OKC) is really really bad, I won't deny that. My first car got a bullet hole in that part of town when i visited my grandparents one day who live off of sw 66th and western.

But north side okc, like nicholas hills, and bricktown are a nice culture to mingle in and I never have had that much trouble in edmond or deer creek. I've been to tulsa many times for contests, car shows, family, etc and maybe its just my perspective, but Tulsa just wasn't my cup of tea. I know my way around really well but what I said earlier about being worse than edmond is Jenks. I was with a friend who had a truck cut him off and he honked and the truckdriver slammed his breaks causing us to swerve around and the idiot threw a can of coke at his car and dented the door. Never had that happen in edmond.

Well one down and one to go. KCUMB was very laid back and pretty much informal. I do really like the school and will have NO problem attending there if OSU doesn't work out. That said at the end of the interview I was asked what I would do if I got accepted to both OSU and KC... I was a little stumped as to what to say and be somewhat truthful. I just told them I hadn't planned on multiple acceptances and would be more than happy with just one. IF it did happen I'd have to sit down, view curriculum and see which was a better "fit" for me and my family... I'm now at 31st and Memorial in a Fairfield Inn relaxing in yet another hot tub contemplating 2morrow. I do feel that I did well today at KC and also feel that it was awesome practice leading into 2morrow.

Dr. Mom, well if you happen to be there my name is Brandon Bailey and will be in a black suit with a yellow shirt and tie. Short cut blonde hair. Feel free to say Hello... As for everyone else I will post hopefully tues evening, but very possibly not until 715ish on wednesday. Feel free to post on here if you have any questions or facebook me.

Well I'm at a truckstop so won't post much yet. OSU was pretty awesome. VERY laid back interviews, closed file.... Just want to get to know you types of questions.... You interview in the morning from 9 to 12.... I had the usual questions. Why medicine, why osteopathic, stress relief, med experience.. more to come later..

Hey everyone!

I actually had an interview at OSU-COM today, but I couldn't make it. I was just wondering how it went for all of you guys? Who did you have interviewing you... I know a lot of the profs there..

Also, I do think Tulsa and OKC are a bit different, but Tulsa is a nice quiet and calm place, and it has everything you would need. Living is cheap, there are some nice areas, and if you really want that "city feel" dallas is like a 4 hour drive. I'm living here now, and I have been for abt a year (originally from Muskogee!) Good luck to all of you who interview and decide to go here!!

I think I have my heart set on Touro-MI, since I lived in CA for like 8 years!!!! But EVERYONE at OSU is SUUUPER nice and very student-centered.....starting from Lee at the front desk to the quirky head librarian (ask him about astrology and/or meditation!!). Dr. Stevens and Dr. Davis are pharm professors, and they are very cool.

Anyway, good luck to all!

ALRIGHT!! One more person to tell me how awesome and laid back it is at OSU-COM!!! It's gettin' easier and easier everyday!!! Did Dr. Mom come by and say hello?? 😉

First,
Dr. Mom thnx for coming by and offering some stress relief to all of us and mentoring us the way you did. Little things like that speak volumes about the school and its students.
Second,
Everyone should relax about their interviews at OSU-COM. They do not read your academic file before the interview. The interview is simply to get a good idea of who you are and what you are about. I had a Dr. Trent and a Dr. Bost. Both VERY nice, easygoing and easy to talk to. Dr. Trent did tell me she had glanced at my personal statement and asked me to elaborate a little which was fine by me as it helped lead the questioning into a strong sector for me. The ambassadors were all very friendly as well as all the students that kind of randomly dropped in throughout the day to say hello. We were told there is a 2 week turn around and that acceptances are sent out via fedex or ups and the other 2 types of letters are snail mail. They are still awaiting approval on the increasing of class size to the neighborhood of 98 I believe. Eventually they want to get to 115 if I remember correctly. They do have a new patient simulator much like the ones at KCUMB, just a little newer and slightly more advanced. After two straight days of interviews my mind is a little shot so I'm sure I'm forgetting something so feel free to post here or on my facebook if you want to know anything in particular. Much luck to the interviewees here on out!! 👍:luck:
