OSU-COM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay congrats on your interview; now you have hopefully a minimum of two weeks until you get a nice letter.

Okay all you prospective OSUCOM students, I really need your help. I originally had an interview scheduled for today at OSU and moved it back to Nov 29 for more time to deliberate if this school is worth dropping another $500 for interview expenses. I've been accepted to TCOM (seems very similar to OSU) and several other schools already with upcoming interviews at the University of Utah, University of Washington, and University of Nevada Reno. I had a couple key questions about this school which will ultimately help me decide. The first is about the teaching hospital. Is it on campus? Are most of your third and forth year rotations through here (in other words can you stay in Tulsa during you rotations... I have a family and moving could be a problem)? How big is it? Secondly, is the class size expanding this year... the small class size now is a plus and significant increases in that size is not desirable in my mind? Finally, can married OOS students qualify for in state tuition after year 1 as long as their significant other is working and other steps are taken to establish a permanent residence in Oklahoma (this can be done in Texas)? Any feedback concerning these questions or any other aspects of this school would be greatly appreciated. If I had not heard such great things about OSUCOM I would of canceled this interview already but I feel like this school warrants the fullest of consideration!

Well, I don't know the answer to some of those questions but I do know the teaching hospital is only a couple blocks away. You can do MOST of your rotations in Tulsa but you are required to do some rural rotations and community hospital rotations but they are only for about a month at a time, I believe. I don't know about the instate thing. They are TRYING to expand their class size but I think the MOST they were talking about is still under 100 students which is incredibly small still. I don't think they will ever go past 115. It truly is an amazing school and if you can afford it AT ALL, I would SERIOUSLY push going to see for yourself. We can tell you all day but until you experience the atmosphere and facilities for yourself, you don't really understand.

I am seriously considering going to the interview. I have been reading up on stuff and am especially concerned about the OSU medical center. It appears that OSU and Ardent disagree on how to spend state appropriated funds at the hospital. With this deal being up in the air it says that the school may be closed as a possibly option since the state legislature probably does not want to shell out the money to buy the school its own hospital. :scared: It seems as of today there has been no breakthrough on this issue. As a prospective student this uncertainty does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Its not going to be a big deal. OSU already has a stake in Integris, specifically their SW Medical Center in OKC which is part of a huge hospital chain and are on good relations with them. So worse case scenario, you'll be doing your residencies in okc.

The most likly scenario is that the whole money vs doc situation will get to a point where a cool medium will be reached and the tension will resolve. You have to understand all that occured was that the Ardent expressed his disagreements, thats all. The news, like always, inflated it. Also, theres been news that are larger chain of hospitals is looking into buying out the current owners of the OSU medical center and would leave it as it is.

Well guys, I just bought tickets to Tulsa for my interview date on Nov. 29. After reading this thread I feel that if I declined this interview I would regret it! It seems to me with most of the nation needing physicians and Oklahoma being no exception that the state and OSU is not going to jeopardize this program because of a disagreement with Ardent... I would assume this will be worked out soon! It seems that if your OOS and go to the interview there is a good chance of getting in (~56%), hopefully I can rock the interview. Anyways, any more feedback on the school would be helpful... and anybody interviewing on the 29th, I'll see you there!!!

not sure of anyone else interviewing that day, but if you want to do really well in the interview I constantly hear get edumacated in the needs of rural medicine, and also keep up with the current news in medicine etc.

The hospital thing isn't an end of the world thing for the school. Ardent is trying to extort the state. 🙄 Even the residencies can be relocated to other facilities in Tulsa. The school will be fine and will have strong sites for rotations.

Yeah, they hit on this issue at my interview orientation because a lot of the students were concerned. It's REALLY not as big of deal as they are trying to make it be. The school is not in jeopardy and neither are the residency programs. There were actually legislators there yesterday looking at everything so maybe they are getting something worked out really soon!!

Yeah, it seems they will get something settled soon. OSU has some of the strongest graduate medical programs of all DO school... it is very impressive!

Well I am glad you like OSU so much and I wish you the best on the 29th.

PatriotsForever,

Check your PM

I'm interviewing on November 29th, too! I can't find the interview thread on here. Is there one for OSU-COM?

for interviews, up top see "databases?" Click that, then under interview data, click "medical school" then "US Schools" then find the school of interest.

Tomorrow is Statehood Day! Yay! No school! Well, for the Oklahomans...😀

i've seen a couple of people post they have interviews with osu however they haven't updated the interview thread? Was wondering why

Probably because its dead or they already did the interview feedback and were too lazy to post in the thread. Either way, the information is available!

Ok guys, there hasn't been any activity in awhile!!!! What are you guys up to?? Surely there is SOMETHING exciting going on! The semester is almost over for one!!!! I'm also SUPER EXCITED for some turkey!!! 🙂 I'm gonna have to get some pumpkin cheesecake from work (Olive Garden..you HAVE to try it if you haven't! It's amazing) and take it home and act like I baked it. HAHA

Im personally looking forward to a few things myself, such as punkin pie... devilled eggs... and shadowing the ER on the day after thanksgiving! I here about the brutality that occurs on the day after thanksgiving shopping sprees and now I get to see it, lol.

I'm really looking forward to the shadowing, I already got my Integris name badge and its bad ass. lol.

does anyone know how many offers have been sent out? I have seen one acceptance, and one wait list does anyone know anyone off the site that has been accepted or waitlisted?

Saylorsdad...HOW DID YOUR INTERVIEW GO?? 🙂
Man, I'm excited about something too!!!! To graduate, I have to do a forensic science practicum (aka internship) and it has never been done before but my professor is trying to get me set up with the chief medical examiner so that i can watch autopsies for my practicum. The entire reason i wanted to go to edmond and later become a doctor was forensic pathology...my interests have kinda changed over the years but forensic path is still awesome!!!! I have an interview with him after thanksgiving!! This has been a great week!!!!

PHLAME, are you going to integris southwest??? that is where I shadowed all summer. It's AMAZING!

No interview yet, not a peep. Have another l.o.r. on the way, and have a doctor helping me, but still haven't heard anything. Going to call them to see what's up.

Yea, I am at southwest under Dr. Chris Borin. I am supposed to get a call on monday to confirm everything. The secretary doing everything was new, having been there only a month, but she was a great person and I've only talked to Dr. Borin on the phone, but hes great too.

Thanks for bumping the thread!!!!
I think it's just a waiting game right now.....everyone is waiting to hear something whether it's an interview offer, an acceptance/waitlist/rejection notice, being pulled from the waitlist, etc. I'm just trying to stay focused on my courses because the semster is ending SO FAST!!! Plus, my mentor is having me write up a research grant propoal (which I've NEVER done before) and that is really stressing me out as it is due in a couple weeks. The week after Thanksgiving, I have FOUR labs reports all due. It's ok, though....we always survive!!! The pre-med club is gonna have a cool meeting this week..It has to do with the mental state of what it is like being a med student. I'm pretty excited about it.

Sounds like its going to be exciting! not, lol... I actually have 2 labs, 2 speeches and 2 tests the week I get back... wooopeee lol.

4 lab reports? eek! I have one for Org. II, and 3 papers due for a couple of classes. I've started to slack BIG TIME these last couple of weeks.

Org II is ruining my life. Geesh...I'm ready to get my B and get the hell out!!!!!

Sorry, just my ranting for the day. I hope all is well in your part of OK! 👍

haha everything will be well when I hit good 'ol DOO-RANT on Wednesday!!! I REALLY miss home sometimes. They just don't make 'em as hick up here as they do down there!!! LOL! I love it!!! I hope I NEVER forget where I came from. "Redneck Woman" is like the theme song of my life!!!!! We really DID leave our christmas lights up well into July most years!!! haha!! It looked purty at night!

Indeed I live in atoka, and got into the habit of leaving my christmas lights up all year. Last few years though I've been scrooge and haven't decorated at all. SE oklahoma you see some weird stuff refrigerators on porches, 100 dogs in front yard, etc.

You live in Atoka?? My ENTIRE family on my mom's side if from Tushka!!!!! That is where I spend most of Thanksgiving and Christmas!! What a small world!

I am speechless guys.. Dr. Stewart just called me from OSU-COM and offered me a position... I was in the middle of typing this huge paper for Advanced Cell and now I'm just dumbfounded... I think the paper is good enough and is getting handed in as is... I couldn't type anymore on it if I wanted to... Hope everyone has an awesome Turkey day... Can't wait for ORIENTATION!!!!!!!

Congrats man, that didnt take long! Lol all of you who get accepted this time around will have to share your notes when I apply for class of '13 in '09. Hope you didn't pay the grand for a deposit yet... lol.

I'm IN!!!

Congrats Myo.!!!.

Ya I was just getting ready to pay the deposit to KCUMB when Dr. Stewart called me... I feel so relieved...

I actually live in Tushka just south of the baseball field, we built a house here a couple of years ago. Who's your family?

Congrats to everyone on their acceptance

Oh my grandpa just passed away in march but he lived there for 50 years and LIVED at the Atoka truck stop. Ben Bonham. I know Eddie Brown of Brown's Funeral home VERY well!!!! I used to want to be a funeral director and he let me shadow a lot. My aunt and uncle are ramona and bobby smith. They live on boggy depot road right off highway 69

Awsome I'm Brad Bonham's second cousin, he was a year ahead of me in school and we still are close. It really is a small world, are the smith's still into sand drags?

Contratulations Guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now the FUN starts................

Remember to call or email if you need anything.

DR. HARLEYMAN

HAHA yes they are still VERY into drag racing!! That is CRAZY you know my family!!!!!!! Brad Bonham lives down the road from my grandparents (when they were alive). Wow what a small world!

Thanks for the congratulations everyone!!! It means a lot. I know how HARD it's gonna be......but for the next nine months, I'm gonna LOVE IT!

Congrats, myo this was your first time applying right? Gives me hope that as long as i perform well on my MCAT I can make it my first time. I am all hyped up already and I have a year until I hear the fateful words of accepted, denied, or waitlisted. Oh well, I have to get a TB test and thats going to suck...

haha TB tests SUCK!! Yeah, this was my first time applying. I am proof that barely being 21 and working your ass off can still get you into medical school. It still hasn't really hit me yet. I SUCKED at the MCAT. It was DEFINITELY my weakest point. I feel that getting the head of the Rural Health Center worked in my favor since that is what I am all about. I just had an amazing interview and some really unique experiences that set me apart. It had NOTHING to do with the MCAT because my scores are REALLY bad. Just work hard and you will be in.

If I get accepted my first time around, I won't even be 21 yet. Since my birthday falls in February, I'll be 21 when and if i start the following fall.

It's ok!!!! My first-year friend told me there is a girl in her class that is 19!!! And there is a second year that is only 20!!!! They REALLY don't care about age....they have anywhere from 19-36 and up! As long as you can prove that you are mature, age won't be an issue. But, yeah, hit the MCAT HARD and don't kill yourself if you don't get the score you want right away. Oh, Stephanie says HI!! 🙂

Lol sounds good. Did you see her at work? Probably a stupid question but oh well.

Yeah I saw her at work!!! She told me she used to be room mates with your girlfriend

Yea she used too, but to keep a long story short...

Steph was very irratative and invited a mutual friend(a) to live with them, then convinced mutual friend(a) that amber (my gf) was horrible and they moved out and broke the lease on her; Now steph and the mutual friend live together and steph absolutely hates and trash talks amber and treats the mutual friend(a) horribly and is trying to get another mutual friend(b) to move in so she can kick out mutual friend(a). its an obvious cycle.

Now mutual friend(a) and Amber are best friends again. Plus the whole scenario with steph and her ex David and her new bf... its all alot of drama.

Happy Turkey Day Everyone!!! (nice way to bump the thread).
