OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

>50% are married. Probably between 25-35% have kids.
Quite impressive! No wonder OSU has a such a close knit and friendly environment! The reason I was asking is because I was going through old SDN threads about OSU at work, and a lot of the posters mentioned they either were married or had family. Hopefully a single guy (with no kids hopefully, I think
) like me will fit in?Congrats on the interview. Sorry I didn't make it by today, ran out of time due to some circumstances.
I was waiting for you to drop by! Especially since the 2nd years kind of got a break this week, we were told. When does the selection committee meet to make decisions on interviewers? I'm stressing out!!!

Yep no problems there. There is still a strong singles scene in school. We all get along though lol.

Really sorry, had some extenuating circumstances and had to miss some classes and leave school early. When you get accepted (see what I did there lol) you will see me at admitted student day! As far as the committee it varies, but generally pretty quick.
Interviewed at OSU yesterday and had a great time! It was awesome to see all the construction that was going on, definitely a good sign and shows that the school is improving on what is already an excellent place to go to medical school! These 3 weeks on waiting to hear back are going to be the longest 3 weeks ever! Good luck to everyone else that interviewed yesterday!

Good luck! Yea, I fell in love with the school after I interviewed there as well. If you get accepted, they should call you within a week. I remember they called me four business days after I interviewed.

Thanks! Unfortunately they told us that even though they have been getting back to previous interviewees with their decisions very quickly that it would be up to 3 weeks for us to hear anything back.
EDIT: I will definitely keep hoping to hear back in 4 days tho! 🙂

That's what we were told a few weeks ago as well and they called within one week, just saying 😉
Something I forgot to ask while I was there. Will podcast of the lectures be available?

Nope, only one course uses it I heard. But I also heard there's an OSU student board that has a lot of useful material to be shared.

Both histology and Biochem use recorded lectures. Anatomy does not use it this year - I don't know if they will do so in the future.

Awesome! Knowing this makes me happy!
Is there a lot of organic chemistry involved in the pharmacy lectures??
Haha no, not really. One of the professors openly stated his hatred of it actually.

Phlame, don't you think it should be important that doctors know the reagents that convert aldehydes to esters?

Sure! Its most essential that you know that!

When I walked out from my MCAT exam, I remember saying to myself that I no longer have to extensively study O Chem anymore haha.
I decided I don't want to do the DO/MS program. But, will I still be able to do research in my first year? And how do I go about doing that, emailing the different professors, like in undergrad? Sorry if it seems like I've asked this question before lol, one of the reasons (among many others) I'm choosing OSU over other schools is because they really have some good research projects and I want to be a part of it, but I don't want to go crazy tackling the DO courseload along with an MS courseload.

Maybe Lindsey wasn't joking afterall haha unless people have been accepted and I wasn't. I guess I'll just have to relax and quit staring at my phone everyday from 3 to 4...

No call here either and I'll be trying to do the same...

You will not be able to do research during coursework your first year as a traditional student. You A) won't have the time and B) won't want to make the time. You will have an opportunity to do it over the summer and possibly 2nd year, but its up to you. You're time becomes gold and you really have to be frugal about how you spend it.
Forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong place but I am hoping to get info from OSU-CHS students/grads etc. I am a paramedic and have finally made up my mind that I want to be a DO. I see that I will need a few upper level sciences to be competitive. I live in the Tulsa area and wondered if anyone could comment on the science courses around the area that are most useful when going on to DO? I appreciate the help.
P.S. The final deciding factor on going to DO and specifically OSU was the staff and med students that I run into daily at OSUMC and other area hospitals.

Congrats on your choice. We have quite a few students here that are past Paramedics/EMTs and have taken a similar path to you.
University of Tulsa has a strong program in the upper sciences, namely their Histology course. Most of the people I've talked to went their to finish their degrees/take upper level courses.
Hey guys so I'm interested in adding OSU-COM but after looking at the LOR requirements, I unfortunately don't have a D.O. letter. Is a LOR from a D.O. absolutely required?
Yes it is an absolute requirement.
The school wants you to have experience with a DO and it should be a long/good enough experience that said DO would write you a LOR.

From my application experience, I believe most schools either require or HIGHLY RECOMMEND having a DO letter.

No call generally means wait list. Rejections are rare but can happen.
So would it be better to wait on the letter and see what it says or to call Sara today? No call generally means wait list. Rejections are rare but can happen.

I see. So how does the wait list work? Should I get ready for a couple of weeks of waiting or a couple of months? Thanks guys.
Congrats to everyone who got accepted and good luck to those who are waiting!
Months. Probably around March/April? I'm not sure if they rank their waitlist or do it chronologically, but around 50% of the seats (~45 people) are from the waitlist.
ok so they wait until march or april before they start pulling from the waitlist?
Based on two sites:
1) http://www.healthsciences.okstate.edu/student/recruitment.cfm
2) http://www.healthsciences.okstate.edu/student/admissions/timelines_fees.cfm
Interviews conclude in April. They usually wait til interviews are over before they take people off the waitlist. Admitted students day is sometime in June, so you'll know definitely by then methinks.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!
As of TODAY, OSU regents have approved the increase of the class from 92 to 115! They added 23 slots and it will start with this interviewing class!
True! Each application is considered each and every time the ad-com meets and you can be admitted at anytime.

False! There is no ranking or chronological or ANY order to the wait list. Each applicant is given a score based on interview, academics, and then written comments are made by the interviewers and the ad-com.Months. Probably around March/April? True they do conclude in April, but the final withdrawal date to receive refunds of deposits is in mid-May so most movement occurs then. However, movement can occur up until classes start.Based on two sites:

No that can't be true. Im pretty sure they review your application again every time another round of interviews happens. I know someone who got waitlisted after an interview in January and got the call the next week. Don't worry about it!

Phlame, I was told on my interview day (by Dr. Stewart) that OSU got approved for the increase in class size, but that didn't mean they would fill all 115 seats.....so is it final that the class size will increase to 115??
