My daughter has run out of time to choose a "pre-med" school and seems to be down to these 3. She wants guidance but I am not equipped to comment on the perception of any of the schools. Any feedback, +/-, is greatly appreciated.

Toledo -
  • Most affordable, best financial aid package (assume $14k/year)
  • Assuming her academics are in order - guaranteed interview with the medical school (has been accepted to their version of a combined program)
  • Seems to have the least amount of research opportunities
  • Lowest ranked of the 3 and least prominent reputation

Ohio State -
  • Least affordable, worst financial aid package (assume $42k/year)
  • If she is a good student, will she have problems getting med school interviews
  • Seems to have the most research opportunities
  • Highest (marginally) ranked of the 3 and most prominent reputation

Cincy -
  • Financial Aid is in line with most schools (assume $28k/year)
  • Assuming her academics are in order - guaranteed admission to the medical school (has been accepted to their version of a combined program)
  • Seems to have ample research opportunities
  • Solid rank and solid reputation

The questions are:
  1. Is OSU (her dream school) so much better that it's worth paying the extra
  2. Is Toledo so bad that she is wasting her time there and will be regretting it 4 years from now and again 8 years from now
  3. Is Cincinnati a solid compromise, in terms of tuition and prestige
  4. Is undergrad at Cincy (with the guaranteed safety net of being admitted to their med school) or Toledo and an application to med school at OSU a reasonable approach

Med schools don’t care where you go to undergrad. As long as you do well in your courses and mcat. It would be a bad idea to rack up such a debt going into medical school.
