What's new? I'm so ready to start rotations.

I'm just hanging out in that weird being done with school, but not working yet period. Starting an emergency medicine residency in June. I'm staying in the same city but defecting to a different hospital.

Rotations are a nice change up from classwork. They can be real hit or miss though depending on the make up of the team.

That's great! Congrats on your match. I feel like I should know if I want to do a residency by now. Any thoughts or referrals to threads that discuss how pharmacy might change in 2014. I'm having a hard time finding credible sources lol.

I'm really a med student (I just like posting in the pharm OT thread). So I have a pretty limited perspective on pharmacy. Just that for healthcare in general things are pretty uncertain in all arenas right now.

So close to rotations I can almost taste it. But we're stuck in a train wreck of an onco course right now. We were short a med chem prof so they outsourced one. All he does (no exaggeration) is bounce around various monograph websites for an hour at a time. That's his lecture.

Two questions on our thirty question exam this morning had to do with pee colors due to various cancer meds. 🙄

Whenever I go shopping for something specific, I feel like I'm looking for something that doesn't exist in North America.

I tried Walmart, Walgreens, and Bed, Bath, & Beyond. I checked the websites for The Home Depot and Lowe's, but they don't seem to have it.

Bonus points if you can guess the category for what I was trying to buy.

I effin hated onco. Last quarter before rotations, nice spring weather starting, end of therapeutics, and throw in onco which seemed to have no rhyme or reason in tx modalities = losing my straight A streak through therapeutics

Still considering a residency, but man I want to buy a house for the family already. But boy, when you look at student loan payments, mortgage payments, and taxes...

I can see why some people don't pay max on their loans... And here I was, already considering buying a cheap property to rent by my old school.

I plan on trying to pay off my loans ASAP and then consider buying a house. I can only hope I won't be needing a new car since my car should last me for a while.

I am a bit jealous that you guys have optional residency. I'm virtually unemployable (as a clinical physician anyway) without one.

But just think, 20 years from now when you come to my pharmacy and somehow don't have any refills on your lisinopril, you'll be able to write a new prescription for it. Right there. Immediately.

If that isn't worth the extra 4 years I don't know what is.

Lol. That would be a small perk!

I don't have much to complain about though, 3 year residency and one of the few specialties with the ability to make significant moonlighting money in residency. I could be a surgeon getting paid the same for more hours, no moonlighting and 5-7 years of residency (yes, "at least I'm not a surgeon" is my go-to anti-depressing thought).

I had heard that you can make serious bank doing emergency medicine. One of my SO's friends from med school went that route, and with picking up an extra 3 or 4 shifts a month she was making absolutely ludicrous money. Unfortunately, I don't think she actually likes it very much though... it definitely takes the right mindset, I guess.

As for first paychecks...

This time last year? Down payment on one of these.

As of now: Down payment on one of these.

Strangely, it doesn't really bother me. When I started playing around with numbers and looking at our projected income, and seeing that we could save up a very sizable down payment on a legitimately nice starter house in no more than a year or so...

I guess being an adult is looking forward to servicing loans.

I would like to get one of those, but my car is supposed to last a long time, so it would just be an extra car. That is, unless I dated a pharmacist who already drives one of those.

I do notice that most pharmacists I know just drive regular cars unless they had a fancy car to begin with (like the cases where their parents bought them a sports car while they were in pharmacy school). They drive ones that are fairly new (made within the last 10 years), but they don't all drive sports cars like we like to think.

I can't remember if I asked here: What's the first thing you're buying with that first paycheck?

I think a new bed is pretty high up on our list.
Getting a bigger and nicer apartment closer to work and vacationing before I start. Counting those as first paycheck since there's really nothing I want right now other than those two things.

Yeah, just two extra shifts a month is more than a pre-tax/deduction paycheck of your resident salary. Which is a nice perk of being an EM resident. You gotta like it though, it really seems to be one of those hate it or love is specialties.

What specialty is your SO? If you don't mind me asking.

:laugh:Depressing isn't it?

A couple of sites I read seem to indicate that buying a couple-years old Toyota or similar sedan is the way to go while paying off loans, etc. I'd like to acquire a rental property, but I'm not sure how to do it while paying down my own mortgage and student loans. I guess we could just set aside a little each month.
Yep. There is a big premium associated with new cars, so even slightly used saves you a good chunk of money.

She's doing a surgical path fellowship right now, and has a heme path fellowship lined up for next year. Sucks, though, since it's in Dallas and we'll probably only get to see each other one or two weekends a month. I guess I'll have plenty of time to study?

I think I've abandoned my hopes of finding a place close to work. Now Just looking for cool places with a less than 20min drive.

I hear that. I keep leaning on the wife about our housing budget. My wants list + her wants list = over budget! I found one that was perfect and met both our wants (8mins from the hospital!!!) but was $95 over budget so I got stone walled 🙁

I need a <20 min commute to maintain sanity. Hell, if I could swing 10 min, I'd be in paradise😎

That sucks🙁

My problems seem to be mostly stemming from needing to find a reptile friendly apartments (some places/people seem to have a major reptile aversion around here).

Never thought that would be an issue. We have three dogs and are likely going to have to only bring two as nobody seems to take three even though my kiddos are only 15lb a piece
