They brought America's Army in for us at the MEPS (military entry processing station) also... and our 17 1/2 year-old recruits were playing.

At 17 1/2 you can be sent home in a pine box as long as your parents consent, who cares about a video game?

Yeah I was shocked... the first time in this thread's lifetime I'm sure.

Somethings up... we must all be getting busy or something.

yo tambien.

i've had quizzes every day of this week (and last week)... and the weeks to follow.... gahh wake me up when may is coming to an end.

ich auch. heute habe ich für sieben stunden studiert.

It felt like I was trapped in school today because of all the studying.

I have been stressing about my interview on friday and work has almost put me over the edge this week...and then today my grandfather died. It has been a ****ty semester thus far.

What better to do when you can't sleep than come on here?

It does sound very tough indeed. Probably a lot tougher than I can imagine. We're hear to listen to you if you ever want to talk about anything on the forums (or in PM or the chat).

Thanks, I really appreciate your kindness. I will get through but going to the UofA interview on Friday is going to suck. I wish I could change it.

Did they give you a phone number you can call? At my interview invite last year, they gave me a phone number to call in case I needed/wanted to reschedule it.

Yeah- I might do that. I am just scared there are not anymore spots at a time I can do it. Oh well, such as life. I don't think life was meant to be easy. Sorry, I didn't mean to bring ya'll down or anything.

It's understandable. If people aren't willing to listen to you when you're having a tough time, then they're not worth your time and effort.

I dunno where you're interviewing, but I thought most schools had the admissions committee meet after the interviews were done.

Oh, wirklich? Kommst du aus Deutschland? Hast du je in Deutschland gewohnt?

(Courtesy translation for non-german speakers:
No, my best friend growing up spoke german at home. My mom also speaks german although my family isn't german , we're scandinavian. Then I took two german classes in high school and three in college.)

My mom's usually the only one I speak german with anymore🙁

Damn, I remember when a 2% error in lab was halfway decent... :scared:

What lab are you taking? I don't remember what percentage was acceptable for us... I started taking Orgo in 2006 😱 I think in Orgo I we weren't graded on accuracy as much, but in Orgo II they were strict. I loved shoving the stuff we made in the capillary tubes and watching it in the Mel Temp.

Analytical I. Our goal was 2-4 parts per thousand... somehow I wound up at 27ppt. :lame: So, I get to visit the Wednesday lab session to try it again.

Oh funn 🙁... I got so excited over my bacteria growing on my streak plate that I put such a huge smear on the slide that my Gram stain came out far too thick. When we put it under the oil immersion microscope you couldn't really see any individual cells. I've always been better at chemistry labs than biology. LOL

You know, the crazy thing is, is that as I was reading that in German, I said it out loud in English  Does that make me a little fluent? I'd have to build up my vocabulary a lot more to be even somewhat fluent.

Damn, I remember when a 2% error in lab was halfway decent... :scared:

I had a professor (who is also a pharmacist) count off 30% because I wrote down 5.90 mL (because the meniscus was right on the line for the 0.9 mL tick mark on a graduated cylinder, and as a former chem major, I was trying to be accurate). I asked him why he took off points, and he said "because of trailing zeros."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trailing_zero

In mathematics, trailing zeros are a sequence of 0s in the decimal representation (or more generally, in any positional representation) of a number, after which no other digits follow.
Trailing zeros to the right of a decimal point, as in 12.3400, do not affect the value of a number and may be omitted if all that is of interest is its numerical value. This is true even if the zeros recur infinitely. However, trailing zeros may be useful for indicating the number of significant figures, for example in a measurement. In such a context, "simplifying" a number by removing trailing zeros would be incorrect.

This is important because if I ever wrote Doxycycline 100.000 mg, it could be mistaken for 100,000 mg and 100 grams of it would be given. I just didn't think my instructor would be so harsh on a first year student, but I guess that's the best time to find the mistake and fix it.

Welcome to analytical chemistry dearest   :meanie:, I remember those glorious days when it took 4 hours of virtually babying your experiement to get things done. If you think analytical chem is bad, analytical biochemistry. :scared: :scared: :scared: I remember when I used to cry several times a week in lab and literally spend nights there praying to God my errors were less than 0.5 %, my results would be decent and my PI would be satisfied.

RXlea, so sorry about your loss. 🙁

Wow. It would have to be a miracle for anyone's results to be that close. Were you guys taught to be perfectionists in lab?

I do the same thing when I read Spanish. I'm seeing it in Spanish but I read it in my head, or out loud, in English.

I've been hearing and speaking various words and phrases since I was a little kid too so it's not like I learned it entirely in school. English is by farrr my first and only perfect language though.

Haha... funny you should mention that.... I did that today too. 😀 Well, both my unknown and my isolate came back ambiguous. I re-streaked my isolate and will probably restain my unknown as well... think I may have been a bit too zealous with my heat-fixing.

How do you guys judge a school? This year, it seems like hardly anyone's applying to my first choice, and their PCAT and GPA stats have gone down steadily since the school first opened. I'm starting to feel like I might be attending one of the quick-start schools that popped up in response to "the great Shortage."

I judge a school based on a lot of things. Accreditation, what I hear from current students, curriculum, student organizations, reputation, etc. For my own personal reasons I consider location and cost too (but not a big issue since most schools in my state are private anyway, and I'm morethan willing to go out of state). I try to find out as much as I can read about and also talking to admissions counselors, etc and seeing the kind of atmosphere the school has. I applied to two very old prestigious schools and I also applied to two relatively new schools. Age of the school doesn't really matter to me as long as they're accredited and I know that I will have good opportunities there to get involved and have the same experience as other pharmacy students.

That brings back some memories from microbio  I was in that class with a lot of nursing students in the summer.

Me too! I think I went a little too pyromaniac with my bunsen burner... plus I found some really bright rusty orange colored bacteria colonies on my streak plate from the water fountain, so I got really excited and wanted to make sure I had no problem finding lots of bacteria on my slide. I took a chunk with my inoculating loop and then proceeded with the staining.

My micro lab has been really enjoyable so far, probably my favorite class this term so far. Mostly because I love messing about with microscopes. If I had the time and freedom, I'd be bringing in all sorts of weird things to look at.

Lucky... everything I've got is the color of oatmeal. :\

How have you learned so many languages? My roommate took French our freshman year and for some reason I could kind of understand her compositions. I guess romance languages are more similar than I thought.

I love microbio too! My other colonies were all oatmeal colored too so that's why I was excited... I wanted to find something other than Staph, but I didn't because my smear was way to thick. My professor warned us that the water fountain was going to be the nastiest, but I guess I screwed it up.

I also took Spanish when I was in 8th and 9th grade. But I don't remember much from it. I also took German in 10th grade and freshman year of college. I've also picked up some French from some friends who took it and also from random videos on YouTube and computer games.

You're only crazy if you let this bother you for too long

But seriously, I would be annoyed to. Everyone would be. You're just showing a normal response to these types of things.

If it bothers you this much, go confront her about it, and if you sound serious and pissed, she would be very likely to listen to you.

oh no, don't worry it isn't bothering me, i'm just reacting to how outlandish a request this is.......

some people have no qualms... oh... the best is yet to come. we had our first quiz today.... and get this i went to turn in my quiz, turn around go to my seat and this guy kept glancing on this girl's paper who is actually pretty dumb if you ask me (she's apart of the gossip about everyone in class/ZOMG let's talk when he's lecturing group) . So after the quiz she even commented "wow that was pretty hard"... can you say dying of laughter inside.... oh mannn....

i swear i'm going to go crazy at this institution of education.
