So the contract is fulfilled with an AOA approved residency in the state of Ohio, but what about an allopathic residency? What if I find myself interested in pathology or some other residency not available in an AOA residency? Does an allopathic residency in the state of Ohio count as well?

No

I was hoping maybe DORoe or Shinken could chime in and let us know which books we should consider buying off the booklist and which ones are a waste of money. Thanks guys!

Well...understand that I am a book junkie and love to buy and own books, so I might not be the best person to ask. That being said, off the PCC booklist these are the books I've found very useful in my 3rd and 4th year, and most likely into my internship and residency as well:

- Harrison's (buy the latest, greatest edition, the one with the DVD).

- Netter's and also Rohen's Anatomy atlases. The Netter is good to get an overall idea and cool diagrams, the Rohen is useful in real life during surgeries because it shows actual human bodies instead of pretty color drawings.

- The sectional anatomy atlas. You'll become a stud when reading CT scans.

- The Swartz diagnosis book. To this day I still refer to it to refresh my H&P skills.

- The Hoppenfeld physical exam book. Awesome book. If you can afford it, definitely also buy Hoppenfeld's Orthopaedic Neurology book (not on the list). Worth its weight in gold (and priced accordingly).

- Widmann's Clinical Interpretation of Laboratory Tests is a must have for me. It's a great book that receives little if any publicity. You'll understand so much physiology behind ordering lab tests you'll blow your preceptors away (trust me on this 😉 ). The book appears boring and useless when you first browse it, but if you actually sit down and read it you'll realize it's a gem.

- The Klabunde cardiovascular physiology book. It's concise and to the point, and I've used it many times during different rotations.

As you can see, I'm a book junkie. I own many, many books, but these are the ones off the list I would actually buy.

Hey guys, I haven't really posted on here before, so I wanted to say hello!

My school's premedical office has informed us that OUCOM has invited students from my school to a reception and information session that "highlights osteopatic medicine and OUCOM." It's taking place at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, OH. Has anyone attended an informational session from OUCOM like this? Any idea of what I could expect?

OUCOM is on my list of DO schools I wish to apply to, so I definitely plan to attend this informational session!

James4524 when is the meeting? If it is anything like what OU presented at our school last year it will be an overview of osteopathic medicine, opportunities available at OU, and a question and answer session.

Yeah that is pretty much what they are advertising. Did you find it helpful? It is scheduled for April 1st I believe.

Here are the books that I could not live without during years 1-2

Costanzo Physiology- good book, easy to read, good explanations
Harrison's Internal Med- if it isn't in there you don't need to know it
Robbin's Pathology - can use it for many many things
Lippencott Pharmacology - not complete, but good for review and quick reference
Lippencott Biochemistry - has all the biochem you will ever need and more
Rohen's atlas - Real pictures can't be beat
Microbiology Made Rediculously Simple - Love this book for review and memory tricks
swartz physical exam

Those are the ones that will get you through years 1-2, remember you can always borrow any other books from the LRC. I wouldn't buy anything until I checked it out first. You don't have to buy any of the books on the required list. Find the books that speak to you and invest in them.

Thank you very much, both Shinken and DORoe!

Looks like I'll most likely be attending OUCOM this fall! I'm excited to move on. For people that are currently attending OUCOM, I've got some additional questions:

1. Can you do any elective rotations out of state?
2. Does anyone have the match list for the last three years (i've got up to 2005)?
3. Renting: Should I rent an apartment, rent a house, or buy a mobile home?

I've also got a wife and kid to support, and what the financial aid office has indicated, won't get additional financial aid to help cover expenses for the first year (I've made too much money in 2007). Does anyone have any tips for renting with a family and getting insurance?

Thanks guys!

Hello everyone! I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with Summer Scholars at OUCOM.

I don't have experience *yet*. I just got accepted into this summer's program. I am very excited. Have you applied or are you thinking about applying for next summer?

1. You are allowed to do up to 8 total weeks out of state for credit. after that you must take vacation time to do these types of rotations.
2. Sorry, maybe you could contact the admissions office and they might have it
3. This is totally up to you. I bought a mobile home when I was there. I paid a total of 200/month for lot rental (yes i lived in a trailor park) and the payment on the mobile home. It worked very well for me. There are some decent apartments that some of my classmates lived in. These could get rather pricey. Houses can be a bit dicey. It is a college town and most houses for rent that I saw were rather run down, but you may find something outside of Athens itself which would work better.

Hello there prettyispink I haven't heard anything just yet, but there's still time. 🙂 Congratulations to you!! Hopefully I'll be joining you there this summer.

I was put on the alternate list back in February and I understand that the committee isn't going to meet to rank the list until mid-late April.

Does anyone out there have a better idea about the status of the list right now? Do you think it will be like last year where nobody was accepted from the list?

I'm just getting a little antsy...OUCOM is still my first choice and I'm hoping they accept me.

I have another question for some of the PCCers (I applied to the PCC earlier this month). I know the PCC does more CCEs and I was wondering how often you have to use your own diagnostic kit. We were told we should buy a kit, and a lot of people on this site say they bought a kit and never used it. How important is it to invest in a nice kit? I thought I'd ask some of the more experienced people before dropping some major $$ on something. Thanks everyone!

I'm looking for the same information as Punchap please.

If it helps PBL DO, I have called their office since my last post and was told that they would definitely be taking people off the list this year (I'm not sure how many), but there's hope at least!

Good luck to you! :luck:
