OUCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
folks, i applied about 1.5 months ago and have not heard anything (negative or positive). should i be losing hope or is this just a really busy time of the year for them? i'm a lifetime ohio resident with ok scores, lots of shadowing experience. i confirmed twice that my application was complete and it is.

would appreciate your feedback as i'm getting really worried. this is my number one choice.

hey future2011 I am in the same boat complete middle of September and have called a few times to check on my application and was told it was complete and under review. My stats are descent and e/c's are pretty good along with life long Ohio resident. So i feel your pain.

Keep your head up good things will come.

I would not be too worried. I have heard that they accept half their class before the holidays and the other half after so there is still plenty of time. Congratulations to those that have been accepted. I have sent in my first deposit and I'm pretty settled on going here. I heard the computer requirements for next year should be updated pretty soon (within a week or so). If you want to see last years they have them on their website (go to future students > admitted students > student laptop guidelines) . I will also start looking for housing soon and a potential roommate probably around January so if anyone is in the same boat let me know and maybe we could meet up.

thanks everyone. i hope that you guys are right. i know that they don't "reject" anyone until the spring, so i just didn't want to be the person who just thinks they'll get the interview, only to get bad news in the spring.

thanks again - it means a lot.

Think you may be thinking of college park condominiums located at s. shafer and west union right next to howie's pizza. Also there is University Housing located 200 m which has buses that run on the hour. The other route seems to be across the river away further away from downtown. There is Summit and university courtyard which are the most upscale places and then a variety of great bargains in neighborhoods and other places.

I called to confirm that my file was complete in early July and haven't heard anything since (in state, 3.5 and 30P). I've already sent in a deposit elsewhere but I'm still hoping to get an interview at OU. I think 5 months with no word might be a silent rejection in my case, though.

I rank OUCOM very high. Anyone engaging the admissions staff realizes that these people are working hard for the students to establish an amazing atmosphere for learning medicine.

It is the nature of med students to worry, but I think a deep breath could be used when worrying about GPA and MCATs. I went through the process last year with a 32 MCAT and a GPA that was a bit lower than the average. I was wait-listed. I ultimately sat on the wait list, and did not get in.

The great thing about OUCOM is the level of communication. I was encouraged to re-apply. More importantly, specific issues were addressed with my application to make me a stronger candidate. These are the little things (heck, big things) that really sell a person on a university and a program. Regardless of the outcome in the coming months, OUCOM will always work with candidates to make them better. As I suggested, take a deep breath because there is a group of people on your side.

Keep hope alive! The people at OUCOM are very helpful and really care about students =)

Does anyone know how full the class is or when they will be sending out more interview invites?

I applied later than the average, not having my MCAT score until Oct 11, and I just received the letter in the mail (Dec 17th) saying I have an interview for Jan 7.

If you dont mind me asking, what are your stats? MCAT, GPA, ec's, etc.

I'm starting to look at places for next year. I'm considering the summit, university commons, and university courtyard. I'm looking for a roommate or two. PM me if you're interested (I'm a guy by the way).

when did you have everything in? I think I applied to late. Everything in Dec 23rd. Good GPA. background, references, and MCAT. OU is my first choice.
Hopefully I hear something soon. Don't want to go through the process of applying again!!

I'm planning to start at OUCOM in July and I am looking for a roomate (male) for a 2-3 bedroom apartment. I have been researching places online and those were the three it came down to. I want to get a head start before the apartments start getting booked up. I'm also willing to go apartment visiting if anyone hasn't been yet. PM me if you're interested

Received the e-mail this morning!! I interviewed on 1/14 as well and couldn't be happier 😀

I think OU helps us with roommates, but I'm a little eager to lock down a place for next year. I'm attempting to find roommates via SDN, although i'll probably try the facebook group next.

As for pets, I know pets are welcome at The Summit. Here's a link to a list provided by OU that may answer some of your questions or lead you to answers. http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/saffairs/additional_housing.htm

I will likely be attending OU as well. Any idea how people usually find roommates, especially places that are pet friendly?

I was having the exact same concern, as it looks like most places are 3 or 4 bedroom and I have a cat to worry about lol

anyone know how full the class is and how late OU interviews?

I will be interviewing on the 4th. Any idea how full the class is or what chances we may have? It seems kind of late in the application process and I hope it is not for the waitlist now as this is one of my top schools. Look forward to meeting you Punky6.

The application deadline is usually Feb 1st (working off memory here), so it is possible that you got your invite before other kids filed their completed secondary.

There are typically fewer applications to DO programs, so I suppose it gives OUCOM a faster turn around (but also allowing OUCOM to know each candidate better). It also follows MD programs which will be largely set, which gives the school a great chance to talk to a very qualified candidate that did not get in to the MD program they had hoped for.

And be happy--OUCOM recently expanded their class size (just for you!) (http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/news/stories/coca09/index.htm)

Admissions said the class is about 75% full. With 140 people, that leaves 3 rounds of invites, assuming all 12 are accepted from each round. Obviously, a more likely scenario is more than three groups will be needed, so to all those nail biters, stay calm. There is plenty of time left and plenty of room left.

Interview invite today! I was beginning to lose hope 🙂

29Q, 3.5 IS

Anybody still looking for housing? Please let me know or PM me. I'm currently looking for a 2-3 person apartment and open to options.

Yes, it is high and cost and elevation haha. I've been looking at University Courtyard and the Summit and a lot on the OUCOM website. I understand, no problem. Nice avatar by the way.

Interviewed here on Friday. Love love loved it...everyone was so nice and welcoming! Really hoping for good news monday.

Just interviewed at OUCOM this past Friday. Great School and my top choice. Here's a look into their interview stats...

-OUCOM has around 4,000 annual Applicants
-They interview 250 of the top applicants
-In 2011 there will be 140 applicants that matriculate
-Approximately 80% of the class will be Ohio Residents

Additionally, they interview on Fridays and let you know your status by the following Monday! Good Luck everyone...

OUCOM: faculty and staff are super nice, it has a great curriculum, multiple international opportunities and it's more of a family atmosphere...

As far as the interviews go, I think they went great from me. BUT be advised that they do throw you a curve ball interviewer... His first question was one of the hardest questions bc I simply hadn't prepared for it or was even in that mindset "So tell me a joke" :bang:
It took me a minute to come up with something P.C. (Politically Correct) since most of the jokes I hear are dirty and didn't seem appropriate for a first impression... Additionally, the Dr. was texting and kept interrupting me during my answers. Obviously trying to stress me out and see how I handled it. Be ready for a wild little interview but make sure to breath and keep your cool. 😎

Looking forward to learning of the acceptance committee's decision this Monday :meanie:

I'm open to answer any questions people might have...

I had the same guy as you..asked me the same question. I literally couldn't think of anything PC...I think he saw that I was panicking though and was like "hey its not like if you can't think of one you won't get in"

Here is a backup joke you can use:
An annoying premed student was sitting in physics class when he raised his hand and asked his teacher, "Why do I need to know this stuff?".
"Because physics saves lives", the teacher responded.
"How does physics save lives?" asked the smart ass student.
"Physics saves lives," the professor said, "because it keeps certain people out of medical school."

received an interview invite for Friday, March 4 earlier this week. anyone else going to be interviewing that day?

Remember that the food is good, but do not let it distract you from your goal of a good interview immediately after.

I'm keeping calm about this.. but has anyone else not hear anything back? My secondary apps went out a little late because of a lag on one of my LORs but I've sent updated transcripts (which boosted me) and contacted them. They say everything is in an under review about 2.5 weeks ago.

Whyyy is it so late? Anyone else not hear a rejection or interview invite yet? Sheesh it's almost March!

MissPhysician.. i thought i was the only one.. i havent heard anything either...

Best advice is to just keep calm. If you have anything to update, such as grades, continue to update the committee. Remember that DO schools go a bit later than MD schools, so there are still interviews going on and people being accepted. Keep a productive dialogue open to maintain a strong candidacy. Good luck.

Interview invite for March 11, in-state complete in July.
