OUCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone,

I'm very excited to start at OU-COM this July and was wondering if any females from this thread were looking for a roommate? I'd prefer a pet-free/non-smoking environment. Feel free to either reply to this post or PM me.

Although I've heard a lot about housing options from current students, I'm planning on visiting Athens this month to get a feel for each place myself. I'll mainly be looking at places which are very close to OU-COM, including the ones that have been mentioned in this thread.

Good luck to those who are interviewing within the next few weeks (please don't hesitate to ask me questions about anything!) and also to those who are still awaiting interview invites--there is still time and hope! 🙂

Does anyone know how much longer they send out interview invites?

I wish they would say anything at this point. I applied back in August or September and haven't heard mum. Checked to see that my application was complete and they ensured it was. Emailed again earlier this week but haven't heard anything back yet.

The people in the office seemed to be very friendly and helpful when I called. Perhaps calling them would be better than emailing.

One thing I like about OUCOM is that they will work with you to make you a stronger candidate next year, more so than any other school. If you look at my posts, I was in a similar situation last year. I focused on those things OU considered my question marks. It greatly strengthened my candidacy by taking master level courses at OSU from a list given to me by the admissions dept. (of course, I had to do well on those classes!) The nice thing about this kind of communication is that it lets them know you are interested, and there is a good chance that it will help with other schools.

I'm sure they would be helpful but if I don't get in this time I'm not reapplying. This is already my second time through the cycle and I've already done a lot to improve my application from the first time around (masters degree, clinical experience, research, etc.) But they do seem like they would be helpful.

I ended up calling this morning. They were extremely helpful on the phone. For all interested there are only 3 more interview days or so (for those who have not received an invite for the March ones). They usually send out the interview invite by mail a week and a half or so prior to the interview so the earliest we could potentially hear something is the end of March for the April 8th interview.

Is anyone still looking for a roommate? I am unfortunately still looking for a roommate. I signed a lease at the University Courtyards for a 2 bedroom / 2 bath and was wondering if any entering students or 2nd year students would be interested. Thanks!

Has anyone gotten financial aid info?

If you join the Facebook group (eww, Facebook), they will do their best to keep you updated that way.

The last message on the topic was: "Marie Barone in our financial aid office will post something on the facebook group when packets have been mailed. Thanks!"

I am with you in wanting to get the ball rolling.

Hey all! Guess who got an interview invite in the mail today? 😀 I'm so so grateful.. no matter what happens the relief i feel now isss priceless! Anybody else interviewing April 22?

Neurome I have my fingers crossed for you too! I remember you were waiting just as I was. Yay or nay?

Anybody else have some advice for OU's interview process? I have such a busy school schedule until then, and will have to drive there after classes (about 5 hours from here although I am originally from Ohio) and just want to be thinking about things as I get through some big tests. Then I'll really crack down and prepare.

Even though it is late in the process, the admissions people will tell you that you are there because they want you.

While tests are important at this point in the term, take time to practice your interview skills. It will feel like a casual conversation, but you are still being evaluated. Those interview skills will be vital if the conversation meanders or goes in to an area that is not your strong suit. My suggestion might be to leave lunch a bit early to find the interview, as I feel people tend to get caught up with the first down time of the day at noon. The students at lunch are amazing sources of information, but your primary goal is to nail the interview this day.

Pre-COM has 2 sessions, April 23rd and May 14th. So, you will be able to make the May version after you get your acceptance on Monday of the 26th.

Thanks for your positive words! I really do need to practice interview skills... while i'm confident in what I believe and why I want to do this, this is my first time in a very serious formal interview setting. Of course I've had other interviews (and have felt fairly comfortable in them), but not for something of this stature.

I'm a bit confused though."May version"? Are you saying I will have a yes or no from OU the Monday after my interview?

Yes, you will know if you are accepted the Monday following your Friday interview... If you don't get an acceptance email the Monday following your interview you've been either wait listed or rejected. To the best of my understanding the OUCOM class of 2015 is currently full at this point, thus the best case scenario would be to get wait listed.... It's almost impossible to get an acceptance when interviewing this late simply because the schools have extended enough acceptances to fill the class. However, don't worry if you get wait listed bc OUCOM typically goes about 30 people deep into their wait list! Best of luck and try to be on time for your interviews and stay on schedule! :meanie:

Haha yes I think being on time would probably be a good idea
I realize it's a long shot because it is so late, but my journey to this point has been strenuous and I'm trying to look at any step closer as a blessing and a chance... even if it's slim! :xf:

Any advice with how I should spend these next couple weeks preparing? I try to just talk to anyone who will listen about why I want to do this and why I know I can.. poor friends of mine haha. I just want to be comfortable on these topics. Has anyone been hit with questions they had NO idea how to answer?

I was fortunate to have a remarkable sister that has gone through some rigorous interviews at top schools and for top fellowships and scholarships. We practiced a bit each night.

Medical schools interviews break down in to a few categories it seems (I am sure someone has a better list than mine): why become a doctor (rather than a nurse, a PA, the Peace Corps, etc), why this school (and in particular why osteopathy), some variations on ethical questions, "tell me about yourself," and I think it always helps to ask them questions ("what are your primary concerns about me as a medical student?").

I took one question a night in between studying (I had a major test the day before my interview, so I sympathize). Though it was just one question, the phone call would last about 1 hour. She would write down what she liked most about my answer and give me that feed back. I found this was more helpful because once in the interview process, my pre-formed answer broke down. I found myself gravitating to what she liked, versus other people that helped for interviews at different schools that only told me what I did wrong.

I made sure that I had a good example for each that painted a picture. I was a medic in the Army, but no one really knows what that means (this is the origins of my name), so I would pick something remarkable and condense it to the most important parts. You only have a limited time for each idea, and you want to express a lot of ideas without harping on just one accomplishment. All of that takes practice or a silver tongue.

I had some moments that weren't perfect. I had one interviewer express doubt as to how I would handle time with my family in Columbus. Really, there was no good way to make her not worry about that, so I deflected it. I talked about how I felt parenthood could help as a doctor, strengthened my argument for OUCOM as my top pick because of the CORE program (I would do most of my CORE work in Columbus, closer to my family). I also had anticipated this and had a letter of recommendation from veteran that obtained his DO after having started a family. I left that portion of the interview confident that I had addressed her greatest concerns the best I could. You should prepare for that in case it comes up.

After having two weeks of doing one question a night, my sister and I moved on to two questions each evening. The phone call lasted about an hour still (5 minutes per question was my goal). By this point, I had solid feedback on what worked for her. I just worked on fitting it in to the various ways it could be asked, stuck in, etc. The final night, sitting in a motel in Athens, OH, we did our first and only full length practice. I will say that during the interviews that I brought up every topic we practiced, but not in a scripted manor. I had practiced each question in so many different ways that it was just conversational, and this fits OUCOM's interview to a T. You want to sound comfortable and have the person enjoy the process rather than leave the interview not knowing much more about you. (It might be a good time to mention that they will know more about you than you ever dreamed one could without being married to you)

Call the people at admissions and tell them you have heard about a CD they offer at the time of the interview. Ask them to send that to you rather than waiting until the day of the interview. If they can't, just ask someone else. If you really cannot get one, you can probably get lazy old me to send mine. I think this is a unique tool that is voiced by administrators, educators, and students from OUCOM. You get to hear what they think is important. I think this is useful because they have rich experiences that help them define what it is to be a doctor, to be at OU, and to choose osteopathy. It is probably 30-40 minutes long, but worth watching when you need a break from studying and the normal interview practice.

Again, my suggestion is to skip out on lunch a bit early. The best case scenario is that the person on your first interview has their door open and you get a little more time talking to them. After the three interviews are over (4 for some people), the groups of interviewers get together. They won't go until a decision is made. These people will be your advocates for getting accepted versus placed on a wait list. I think it can be productive to have this extra time. It is available to anyone showing the initiative to not wait until someone reminds you it is time to go upstairs, so use it!

Also, let us know if you got in! don't think I have ever written so much for the intraweb, and I would feel hollow in not knowing how it ended. It would be like the end of The Sopranos.

Wow! Thanks for your thoughtful response. I'll definitely take a mental note of all of your suggestions and experiences. I've gotten through the hump of exams, but of course have a huge speech to give next weekend on research I've done. Thankfully I'll mostly be pulling from my report so I won't have to slave over it.

The rest of my time will be given to reading and soul-searching. I know why I want to do this, why I want to be a DO, and have an idea of how to express why I think I'm capable of it.. but this is all in my head. So, I'm hoping to find someone to listen to me ramble and tell me what sounds good and bad; just like you did!

I will absolutely keep you updated. Even if this year doesn't work out for me, I enjoy being part of the process and hopefully gaining some wisdom to spread on to others in order to enrich the DO field 🙂

I would still be hopeful MissPhysician and not think the only end result is waitlist. According the the College of Information book for Ohio University, the range of acceptance dates is 07/20 to 4/22. Hope you rock it!

Haha yes I think being on time would probably be a good idea

Sorry if I seemed a bit negative, I'm just a realist and would rather be told how it is rather than be given false hope. Every school DO or MD is full by this time of year or only has one or two seats open... And as far as the waitlist goes, it's not a bad place to be, especially at OUCOM. There are so many MD schools in the state, many people choose to go to one of them over OUCOM (thus the wait list moves a great deal).

As far as being on time, I meant for you to just keep track of time when you're in each interview. Two of mine ran over and there's really not much time in between so you may have to respectfully tell one of your interviewers that you need to get going! :meanie:

Oh and I'd have a good joke in mind if you get Dr. Clay and be ready for him to be text messaging during your interview...

Best of luck and hope to see you in the fall!!! 👍

Anyone know...is OU done handing out interviews for this year's applicants?

Unless you get an invite in the next couple days they are done... Their last interview dates are 4/20 and 4/22...

I am waitlisted at OUCOM too :xf:

No worries! I'm a realist too. Expect the worst hope for the best? Haha..

Is it weird I'm stressin about the joke? I really am a funny person, but memorized jokes aren't a big part of my humor. I guess I'll start askin' people and may I'll remember one I like. Anyone??

Good luck to everyone on the waitlist or approaching an interview! Underdogs unite! And of course, congrats to everyone who is in. I hope to be right there with you next year!

I got the joke guy too...that REALLY tripped me up as well (I also feel like I have a good sense of humor but maybe not in interview situations haha). I think I visibly panicked cause he was like "Okay look I'm not going to reject you just cause you can't think of a joke...!" and then I calmed down a little.

GL :luck:

Good luck tomorrow (4/22). Last interviews.

So, I realize it's only 10 AM... but I'm so anxious to know what the verdict is. I'll wait till this afternoon to let my nerves set it, but can anyone tell me around when they had a response? Also, if I do not receive an email should I call admissions to verify my status orr is that being too much of a pest?:xf:

I waited till the end of the day and called admissions just to verify. I think they're probably used to it

I received my email at 8:34:04 the Monday following my interview. (I just looked it up, it is not a number I came to know like the birth of a child)

That being said, I probably waited until 11AM to check

So is it safe to assume I'm waitlisted or rejected? Do they notify you either way?

They notify you either way... If you're accepted: you receive an email the Monday following your interview. If you don't get that, you'll be receiving a paper letter in the mail sometime the week following your interview (stating you have been placed on the wait list or rejected).

Don't be disappointed though, the class is currently full and applicants will be pulled from the wait list starting the week of May 15th...

Best of Luck :xf:

This thread should be changing to "OU-HCOM Discussion Thread" soon 👍

OU-COM is changing its name to Ohio University "Heritage" College of Osteopathic Medicine due to the $105 mil award they are getting.

Just read about the possible name change/addition... Pretty funny but I guess that's what you get with 105 mill! Big Congrats to OU!!! :claps::claps::claps:

Really exciting news! Would be even better if the extra class expansion was happening this year 😉😉. Nevertheless, OU continues to grow and thrive!

May 15th... Let the wait list movement begin! :xf::meanie::xf:

I've heard so many different things. Does this mean people on the waitlist will start hearing soon? Cause I've heard it goes all the way into August.. yuck!

After May 15th students are only able to hold one acceptance (AACOMAS traffic guidelines) and must notify schools if they are giving up their seat.

Thus, seats will begin opening as soon as tom and sporadically throughout the summer until the 1st week of August.

Usually it takes a couple weeks for a significant amount of movement to take place. It's a chain reaction that goes from school to school...

I was wait-listed last year. Last year was a bit of a slow year for the wait list. My guess is that it will take time (June?) before you should start getting anxious.

Did you call school to find out where you were on the waitlist (top half/bottom half)?

The most highly sought after schools will pull the most competitive students from their wait lists. This will then open up a spot at the school in which they were already accepted at. This happens from school to school to school....

Allopathic wait lists will begin to move first and essentially dictate when and how many spots open up at osteopathic schools. This process does take a significant amount of time and there's no way of really knowing what will happen aside from previous years averages. At this point there's not much you can do to improve your chances... Be patient and don't forget to hurry up and wait!

Good luck to all of those still waiting to hear! :xf:

For what it's worth, I withdrew my acceptance late last week. Best of luck to all of you!

I just got pulled off the waitlist at another school. As soon as I make it official I will withdraw from OU. Best of luck to everyone on the waitlist. Hopefully one of you gets my spot.

Has anyone gotten in off the waitlist yet? Or has anyone been offered the Post-Bacc program? I anticipated lots of movement but this thread has been so quiet!

I called last week and they said only 2 people have been taken off the list so far. Hopefully it will start to move a little more now

Yup I called a couple days ago and the status hadn't changed. They said they anticipate movement now and that for everyone person who withdraws, a person will be pulled off the list. The initial two people were pulled off the list but not in exchange for students who chose other schools so I guess that could be looked at as good for those still waiting! SOMEONE has to choose another school they've been waiting for! 👍 GL!

I am withdrawing my acceptance today, so good luck to those of you still waiting!

Also, if anyone is still looking for housing, I have a spot on a lease that I need to fill. The place is really, really nice and I'm sad I won't be living there, but PLEASE message me asap if interested!
