out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The banquet was really fun. It definitely made for a good memory. I didn't realize that this award was such a big deal but they really made it out to be, and so it was really nice.

P.S. My dad and I just drove past Strong Memorial and the med school... 😍 haha. Oh and get this... there's a major league indoor lacrosse game at the arena here tonight! I'm trying to convince my dad to go...

awwww, daddy and his wittle girl are going to go to a lacrosse game 😛

.....on a separate note, there's major league lacrosse??? 😆

Ouch haha. Nice that you can get a good look around before int day. Bringing dad might allow you to convince him about Roch too, for tuition purposes🙂, who knows.

I hope her dad doesn't read our thread dd. At best Mr. Lacrosse will wonder why in the heck she'd go to any schools we're at, and at worst he'll use some of his frequent flier miles to very cheaply come down and beat the hell of us haha.

Dude... dad comes alllll the time. Part of me is like okay, you wanna come, make sure I'm okay... part of me is like wow, you think I can't do this by myself. It's fine though, if this is how he wants to spend a couple days... except for that he snores louder than anyone I know and it totally sucks! haha

Yes, there's major league lacrosse!! Its on TV... come on... you're seriously disappointing me.

haha no convincing necessary... this kid's paying for her own tution. But, he's already put in the few "how is this better than Mizzou" jabs, very discretely though.

And yes... he will beat you up. But why send someone else to do the dirty work when it's so fun to do yourself?

She must have the 5000 channel cable plan...'cause I don't see being on the first 4,999. And if its women's lacrosse, its probably only on at 3 am:meanie:.

Something tells me if you took him to Harvard, he'd still find cracks in the pavement that "you might trip over and break your neck" haha.

Well, I figured you have someone else handle your light work.

I've actually seen this at interviews. Not that I'm sexist or anything, but females seem to have parents come along, though at my houston interview where you're allowed to bring family a guy did bring his dad on the tour and to lunch.

That was funny, channel 5000...It's nothing personal we just live in the south. I don't think it's as big deal for some reason. At least I've never had it at any of my schools. We just had those little sports, you know football and baseball.

We need to focus our agression on utmb waitlist competition. So lacrosse's dad can come along but only if he's going to help out in that regard 👍

Soooo funny. Someone doesn't watch their ESPN I guess. And it's a men's game... no women's major league. College women's games are on tv though. You're missing out.

Hah I can totally see that. Although, today on the plane we did talk to a guy from Boston... my dad was like let's go there instead of Rochester!

On a side note... I really want to go buy some noise reduction headphones... ear plugs just don't work... he's awful! I wake him and I'm like dad, seriously??? And then he gets all pissed cause I woke him. I'm like hello, you obviously woke me! Like right now, he is taking a nap. I was too... but you see how far I got w/ that.

He tells me he comes because there's no way I could find my way around by myself... obviously I'm too dense. I always remind him that when we went to DC, he's the one that got lost when I knew exactly where I was... he seems to forget that trip.

Don't think he'd be coming then... he doesn't understand why I like that school.

Hmmm....I would think you might get better results bringing along your friends Smith and Wesson.

Actually, I should check it out sometime. It's an old game isn't it....wasn't it played first by Native Americans?

Hopefully he'll like it too. And good luck btw. I know I give ya a hard time on Roch, but I hope its every bit as cool as you think it is.

My mom was the same way.....its amazing how loud snorers can be, and she's tiny haha.

+1 for that! I'm proud.

Thanks buddy... I hope so too... and I hope they like me as well. They put your interview schedule online w/ who is interviewing you... I have my first interview w/ a woman so far this cycle. She's a family med doc, she's big into medical education reform (she created a whole new type of comprehensive assessment for the school), and she helps run the free clinic (totally up my alley). My second interview is w/ a neurologist. He teaches the 2nd year neuro class called Mind, Brain, and Behavior and is responsible for single-handedly revamping the course to fit the new curriculum... he's got people from Hopkins and other places coming to watch him and get tips. So I'm glad I have two people way into teaching so I can talk about TAing... and to the lady about the free clinic. We'll see how it goes.

Is everyone in your family tiny??

🙁 *puts hands in pockets, looks down, kicks clod* I'm guessing he didn't meet any students.

Huh...nice they let you read up on them before hand.

In my immediate family...yes. My sis is 5'2" and ~105-110....we both mirror our mom/dad at this age.

Good lord... I'd feel like a giant next to her!

My dad's the same. We took this big family trip to disney world back in december and we were sharing a room, the first time he started snoring I had no idea what was going on. I started off getting up and going over to his bed and shaking him violently. This resulted in a snorting flailing of the arms action while tried to figure out what was going on. As soon as he went back to sleep he started again so I gave up and just started throwing pillows at him. By the end of the vacation I was ready to go home and get some sleep.

And good luck too :luck::luck::luck:

Well...ok.

Hmmm...how tall are you (won't ask the weight😉)? She av'd 100 for a long time...till early twenties I think. Sadly, I could probably lose about 5 lbs without too much effort....used to weigh 122 when I was in retail a few years ago. Lets hope I don't though haha.

How tall are you? I guess you need to be descent sized to play a sport as hardcore as lacrosse 🙄

I'm 5'8''... so not super tall, but in lacrosse, I played defense and I towered over the girls who played offense against me.

Speaking of lacrosse... we went to that major league game... so sweet! Besdies the creepy dude next to me who kept hitting on me... haha

 happens to me all the time, except they're usually creepy old women :scared:

So I've never actually seen these mythical "lacrosse girls"...I hope they're nothing like the softball girls 😛

Hey, at least the older gals can't run away as fast . Hmmm.....I get the married ones🙄.

I dunno...what do ya think, dd? Forward past one minute...http://youtube.com/watch?v=K_wb3n3hswY

39, is it a rule that when you have the ball?? you have to hold onto the stick with both hands, or is it just considered good technique?

Hey now... I played softball for like 12 years... and I don't fit that stereotype. My team at Mizzou was all pretty much cute... it's Rugby that has the bad stereotype.

Layin' the smack down. How far did ya'll go?

Oh, wonderful...

Man he was so creepy. I wanna say he was late 20's (so not old, I just said old for dramatic effect) and he kept rubbing against my leg w/ his in the first half and I didn't think much about it because it was packed in there. But then he kept making whispering noises at me and I could see him staring at me out of the corner of my eye but I would never look at him. Then, we had to stand up once to let someone go past and he made the whispering noise and was like "Hey, how you doin'??" I wanted to be like come on man, that was pitiful!

myKuduSlewaZulu said:

Haha yes ball. I want to say its about the size of a racquetball, a bit smaller than a baseball, and a very very hard rubber.

You don't have to hold it w/ both hands. In girl's lacrosse, though, you'd better have good control because you will get checked pretty quickly once you go to one-handed. And, if you have the ball and someone is on your right side so you put the stick in your left, you'd better make sure you aren't trying to push the girl off w/ your right arm. So usually it's just best to keep both hands on it, but some girls when they are running down the field all by themselves switch to one. It's just more about comfort than anything else.

Doesn't look that tough 😎. I think if we all end up at utmb we need to get an intramural league so we can show our northern friend how we southerners can handle ourselves on the field. I bet we could play on horses or cows to make it more interesting

So I haven't heard anything from A&M, anyone know how they do their waitlist stuff?

When I interviewed at UTMB, my tour guide was saying that someone had wanted to start a team but not enough people had played before. Horses or cows?? Come on now, you're ruining my sport...

Ask yourself... has this worked for you lately? If it has, was the girl worthwhile?

Oh so we just went to dinner... there was this couple probably in their 50s sitting by us and the guy smiled at me when I sat down. Then when we were getting up, he turned to me and smiled and said "Hi" and his wife gave him this nasty stare... hahaha oh Rochester.

Oh lord....I wondered what happened to Joey after Friends was cancelled haha. I'm surprised he didn't ask about your stick-handling abilities🙄. Tennis girls are kinda cute. Women's rugby=shemale mud wrestling??😕

How good were your lacrosse teams?

Someone in the Tx thread called and was told next week, probably towards the end of it.

Ah c'mon, are you sure the cold's not getting to you? If not, maybe you need to contact a modeling agency, or at least please make sure the door stays open during your int haha.

My high school team was pretty good. The private schools in the area were the lacrosse powerhouses, but my school, which was public, was usually one of the few that could always compete w/ them. We made it pretty far into playoffs every year.

At Mizzou, my freshman year we got 1st in our division and 2nd in our league. We had some pretty awesome talent. My sophomore year, we got 1st in our division, 1st in our league, and an invite to the National tournament where only 16 teams in the nation went... not to toot my own horn, but I was captain that year... toot toot  We couldn't actually go to nationals though because it was during finals week, which really sucked.

I promise its not the cold... I'm actually doing quite well w/ the weather. Guess they can't resist the curly hair 🙄

Well it definitely takes a pair to hit on a younger woman in front of your wife. Sort of sounds like there's something inherently dirty about the older men up there. Probably a good idea you're traveling with a parent after all 😉

Yeah it's something about those short skirts and running back and forth grunting on the tennis court 😛

And I have to go to work tomorrow 👎 I spent the last five months without a full time job, and not sure if I can start getting up early again...

Rochester weather update: in the single digits, w/ a wind chill that makes it feel like -14 hahaha. Supposed to get up to 15 degrees today!

Good thing I'm inside all day... here goes nothin'!

So I lasted a whole day in my job, and called to tell them to shove it after I left ....worst job ever!

What? Couldn't they let you guys make your finals up later…sounds pretty stodgy to me.

As my anatomy prof said…the gluteus maximus extends and rotates the thigh, and laterally rotates the eyes haha.

Rochester….for when you can't afford Antarctica.

Whoa….is that the one where your int was real short? What was so bad?

Ok 39er, tell us about this mythical land of milk and honey.

Whoa….is that the one where your int was real short? What was so bad?

No this was a different one. It's sort of weird actually, I'd applied for a lab assistant position with this company a few weeks back, and they said they filled it, before they could get to me, but liked my qualifications and would call me if something came up. So they did, last week, for a "data analysis position." I was like great, I can statistically analyze data like nobody's business, but when I got there today they sat me in front of a computer and began to teach me how to do this utterly and completely monotonizng data entry B.S. I was like wtf?!, when this lady sat down next to me, handed me three boxes of receipts and told me how to enter it into the computer. After the first five minutes I already felt like I was developing carpal tunnel, and my back was killing me. It took all damn day and I wanted to kill someone when I left 😡 The worst part was everyone around complaining about their jobs, people talking about doing drive by's and the manager coming up to me telling me I wasn't going "fast enough." Needless to say it wasn't a super day

:beat:

Ok 39er, tell us about this mythical land of milk and honey.

Super amazing. I will have to tell you about it tomorrow though... I'm exhausted from traveling today.

Oh, but just for you myKudu, I will add this: so we landed about 40 minutes later than we were supposed to on my flight from Rochester to Chicago since it was snowing in Chicago. Once we landed, my dad and I had time to eat dinner because the flight to STL was delayed. So we went to the food court and were getting chinese and when my dad was paying for our two meals that should have cost about 18 bucks, the chinese guy behind the register started staring at me and speaking to the other dude working w/ him in chinese and ended up only charging us for 1 meal  So maybe it's not just Rochester... haha

Ok dd, I'm gonna go out on a big limb here and say you did the right thing haha. In fact, you should copy and paste your text into a Wiki article for "dead-end job".

I dunno...I'm only buyin' this one if there was a phone# or a "What's happenin' hot stuff?" in your fortune cookie haha. Did your dad pick up on any of these suitors?

"Ohhhhh sexy girlfriendddddd"... Please tell me that was a reference to sixteen candles... if so, you rock... if not, well, at least it reminded me of it.

Yes, he did actually... at the lacrosse game he asked if I wanted to change seats, and then at the airport, he told the people eating next to us if they wanted free chinese food to take me up there w/ them

I'm off to class... I'll write about Rochester when I get back.

Oh my god, if I worked at chinese restaurant I would so make a bunch of those and hand them out! 👍

He needs to take you on his trips. You could save him some serious dough.
"That'll be $50 ma'am."
*hair flick*
"Ummm...*voice cracks* actually I think it just went on sale today for $30, sorry about that."
*bites lower lip*
"Uh, oh haha...I meant 30 yen. In dollars that'll be 50 cents."

Dad: "Gooood girrrrrl."

Oh my god, if I worked at chinese restaurant I would so make a bunch of those and hand them out! 👍

Hmmm....I wondered why my sister always got the better fortunes.

Okay back from class... so here is the love story that is Rochester...

I walked into the lobby of the Med Education Office and other people who were interviewing that day were sitting there (there were 12 of us). No one was talking! So right as I was going to introduce myself to the person next to me, he was like Hi! So then finally we got people talking. We were taken up to a room to meet w/ one of the deans and he talked about the curriculum and the school in general, and then they handed out folders w/ a bunch of info (and a pretty sweet pen... which might rival UTMBs...). The dean went around the table asking us our names, schools, and majors... so many people were like Yale, Stanford, blah blah blah... I was like woooo state school!!

After that, it was about 9:15 and some people had interviews at 9:30 so they left. My interview was at 10, so I hung around the office and read some of the stuff on the table. Some people didn't interview till 11, so they could roam around and sit in on classes/PBL.

My first interview went really well I think. The lady was fabulous... we ended up talking for about 50 minutes. She asked Why Rochester, why medicine... but the rest was just a conversation. She talked about living in Rochester, why she liked it, and we talked about the free clinic she helps to run. She asked a bunch about the activities I do. Overall she was super.

Then I headed back down to the office and I talked w/ another guy that was also interviewing until we went for lunch at 12. We ate w/ two M1's and they were absolutely hilarious. After lunch, we went on a tour and everything was quite lovely.

At 2:00, I had my second interview. I knew this one would be shorter since he had another person coming in at 2:30. His interviewing style was the complete opposite of the lady's. He was very quick, and shot off questions at record speed. But, it was nothing too difficult because he would base the questions off of my answers. I wasn't getting as much positive feedback from him as I felt I did w/ the lady, but at the end he threw me for a loop by saying "I think you fit here. I like you, you have a plan, I like people w/ plans. I'm not on the admissions committee but I will send my recommendation Dean Hansen's way." I was like ahhhh please!!!

So, I'm in love. But, I know to always take comments like those w/ a grain of salt. Now I just have to wait 8 weeks...

So I got an email saying I'm on A&M's alternate list. Mr. Maldonado actually gives suggestions about writting personal statement updates, and saying we can give an extra LOR. It's funny, he says congratulations like three times in the letter, and it really just feels more like a prolonged rejection 👎 As I can recall at our interview they said last year I think they may have pulled something like 5 people from the list 😕 not real sure though.

Well, if you can still be cheery after going through -14 degree weather, I'm guessing this might be a match made in heaven. Glad the ints went well. I can't remember, did you tell them about your award? What did your dad think? How firm is the 8 weeks?

Well, if you can still be cheery after going through -14 degree weather, I'm guessing this might be a match made in heaven. Glad the ints went well. I can't remember, did you tell them about your award? What did your dad think? How firm is the 8 weeks?

I brought it up in both of my interviews. I just sent thank you emails that were a brief thank you and saying that I dropped cards in the mail to them today and the guy who interviewed wrote me back 10 minutes later saying he enjoyed meeting me very much and would be delighted to see me there next year... man, he's getting my hopes up.

My dad liked it more than Galveston... haha sorry... and thought it was safer than DC, but he's still pulling for Mizzou. He was like I dunno, I'm just used to bigger cities... I was like dad, Columbia is not big! And he was like I know, but I'm used to Columbia

Not positive about that 8 weeks... 8 days would be much better.

dd, when are you supposed to hear from Mercer?

No, but I just got an email today, it said a letter will be coming soon. I'll wait and see what that says before asking.

I'm trying to figure out what I should do as there isn't much else I can do to update at this point. I'm trying to hunt down someone else to shadow at the moment as maybe a little more clinical experience can't hurt.

Glad your interview went well. Looks like you'll have lots of schools to choose from 🙂

As for mercer, I actually emailed the admissions lady there earlier and she told me acceptances slow down for a while, so it might be sometime. They're interviewing through the end of march, so maybe then 😕 The lady was really nice though, and told me "she knows the waiting is horrible, but to hang on"

I honestly don't know what's up with the GA schools. People get in to crazy schools like emory but not a peep from mcg.

Sweet. You're pulling out all the stops on this one:laugh. Hopefully they notice and give account for that. How long does it take to drive to NYC?

Ok, in all seriousness, what does -14 feel like? Cold weather can hit me kinda hard (for obvious reasons🙄)...40 is cold to me, but I gotta know.

Try to relax, what's done is done at this point. When does mcg stop int?

I believe it takes about 5 hours. I had never been to NY before and my first interviewer assured me that living in Rochester doesn't feel like NY since cost of living is so cheap.

Honestly, it wasn't bad... I mean all I did was walk from the car to the building, but I didn't think it was awful. Supposedly Sunday night was some of the coldest weather they had, but I did just fine. It's actually colder here in MO right now than it felt there!

Another few weeks I think. It's just pretty discouraging to think I spent all this money and went through all this b.s. to only have to turn around and do it all over again. 👎

Somewhere an Eskimo premed just spit out his coffee. The midwest is pretty darn cold at times too, so I'm not that surprised my tepid conditioning attempt failed. Even so, it was 71 today in Galveston.

So, don't be coy....what about Roch charms you so?

Yeah that's some cash and effort only to be placed in the perpetual purgatory of waitlists. The GA schools need to stop hoarding all their chips and place a few bets.

Ahhh everything. In terms of the school, I love the innovative curriculum. They tend to stray away from the typical 2 years basic science, 2 years clinicals. I like the testing schedule a lot... it's like 1 test every three weeks as opposed to Mizzou were you have 8 weeks of class, 1 week of tests, and 1 week off. I think they have just the right amount of PBL for my liking and I like the standardized patient program. I love that they emphasize treating the disease will not work unless you take a person's environment into account (I actually wrote about that in my PS). I loved how happy everyone was... faculty included. I also love the opportunities there w/ academic medicine, a latino health pathway, and a community outreach program.

As for the area, it is comfortable just like Columbia is to me. Cost of living is cheap, there is good food, there is lacrosse... and everyone seems to be having a great time.

A lot of it reminded me of UTMB actually. I loved UTMB, but Rochester just seemed to fit more.

Anywho... off into the blustery weather.

Sounds five star. How integrated is it with the undergad/grad schools? Or is it attached to the hospital? Haha, maybe Roch reminds you of home.

dd, how do you like your Crackberry? Is the web browser any good/can you use Opera?

Good for the most part. I love the email stuff, and browser is good (not as good as iphone), but quite worth it for the price. They've had one or two system outages (there was a really big one a few days ago) since I've had it that while the phone still works, internet goes down. What's Opera?

Yeah I saw about that outage thing. Opera is a web browser...possibly the most popular one out there for phones. Never used a Blackberry, but just from what I've heard Opera probably runs circles around its default browser. I use their desktop one...very happy with it.

There is actually a cemetary b/w the undergrad campus and the medical campus . The cemetary was there before the med school/hospital was built and the secretary told us that back in the day when they built the hospital, there were only horse and buggies, so it was just easier to put it by the cemetary for commuting reasons

So yeah, the med school is connected to the hospital. It is called the School of Medicine and Dentistry, so there is a dentistry building closeby as well, but you can't actually get your DDS there... its only for people that want to do more schooling post-graduating dental school.

Apparently, the Kodaks, who donated a great deal to the school, stipulated that it had to be the School of Medicine and Dentistry. That's how that ended up tacked on without actually having a school.

Oh interesting... congrats on becoming a mod!

Okaaaayy, so what happens if Mizzou offers you a hefty scholarship and the Roch doesn't?😀

Jolie, you're on a roll this week...you might want to hit Vegas or at least give me some lotto #'s. Congrats on everything, I'm sure your husband is relieved.

Mizzou rarely offers scholarships... if I got into Rochester, I'd still go regardless of what Mizzou gave me... unless that is they wanna pay for everything and make me debt free by the end of it haha.
