So I'm still in Temple (leaving shortly). We had a very good weekend, and I bought this house:
http://www.realtor.com/search/listi...d05484fd&lid=1097439654&lsn=7&srcnt=11#Detail

It is tiny, but cute, totally updated, and about 10 blocks from S&W. It has about 30 (no lie!) ENORMOUS crape myrtles outlining the back yard, so when I close at the end of May, it should be fabulous.🙂

I'm happy, but it makes things all that much real at the same time...

By the way, congratulations lacrosse!!:bow::bow:

hahah that video is hilarious!

Okay so Passover... kudu got it right w/ all the background stuff pretty much. So the way that Moses got the Pharoah to let the Isrealites go was through g-d making 10 plagues... 1. water turning into blood, 2. frogs, 3. lice, 4. flies, 5. disease on livestock, 6. boils, 7. hail, 8. locusts, 9. darkness, and then 10. death of first born. So the Pharoah finally let them go after the tenth plague when his son was killed. None of the Israelites children were killed because they put a smear of lamb's blood on their doors and the angel of death knew to "pass over" their houses. The Israelites were baking bread so they could leave and have food for their trek, but then heard that the Pharoah had changed his mind and wanted them to stay. So the bread they were making didn't have time to rise (thus we eat unleavened bread) before they ran outta town.

On the first night of Passover, you have something called a Seder, which is just a dinner to commemorate Passover. The centerpiece of the dinner is a Seder plate, which has a bunch of different symbolic foods on it. First, you have maror and charezet which are 2 types of bitter herbs that symbolize the bitterness and harshness the Jews had to survive while in Egypt. Next there is Charoset which is this mixture of nuts, brown sugar and apples which symbolizes the mortar the Jews used to build stonehouses in Egypt (super tasty by the way). Next is a Z'roa which is a shank bone symbolizing the sacrifice of a lamb for the lambs blood for the doors. Then there are the karpas (a vegetable, we usually use a potato, some use parsley) and beitzah (hardboiled egg) to symbolize spring. They are dipped into salt water before eaten to symbolize the tears of the Israelites.

Oh and it's 8 days long... and you don't really do much during the week besides observe the no leavened food rule. Well, at least I don't do much... I'm sure more orthodox Jews do.

Whew... there's Passover for ya.

Ah c'mon, need I remind you of all the times she's tortured us with the "I made incredible edible brownies! Mmmmmm! Sucks for you guys!" routine? Haha...jk 39😛.

haha actually last night, I was at my boyfriend's house and he was like so you wanna make those cookies in the closet?? And I was like nope! So he made them haha... he was making the dough and I yelled from the family room "You're using vegetable oil, right??" cause they have extra virgin olive oil on the counter and all I hear is "Crap!" haha the dough looked hilarious but he baked them anyway and said they weren't too awful. At that moment I was glad I couldn't eat them.

There are some tasty treats for Passover, you just gotta know where to find them (which you learn when your birthday often falls on Passover). My favorites are Macaroons which come in a ton of different varieties... it's basically a cookie made mostly w/ coconut, eggs, sugar and potato starch. Sounds gross, but they are good. I also like toasted coconut marshmallows... I'm really not a huge coconut fan, but baked coconut is so good.

Home sweet home. Looks cozy.

So basically Seder the first night, and nothing leavened the rest of the way...not bad. Charoset does sound tasty. Why was the tradition expanded to all leavened stuff and not limited to bread? Can you eat say cookie dough before its baked? Or is it yeast as an ingredient that's the issue in these foods?

Never really liked coconut myself either...

That's where its up for debate. We are technically not allowed to eat anything termed as chametz, which means anything containing certain leavening and fermenting products. So chametz also includes grains that bread may be made from, which are wheat, rye, barley, oats, and spelt, except for matzah which must be made from one of those. We can't eat those because oral law says that they start to ferment within 18 minutes of contact w/ water... so by this law, we're really not allowed to eat pasta even though it's not technically leavened. Other things like rice, some veggies (including raw and frozen), and corn products also shouldn't be used.

The amount you adhere to these practices depends on how much you yourself practice the religion. My family always mostly just sticks to the bread thing, but I also do the no pasta thing.

Very nice 👍

The sad part is you'll probably be paying less for your mortgage each month than I'll be paying to rent an apartment in downtown houston 🙁

So I'm no chef, but aren't cookies generally made in the kitchen?

The original low carb diet 🙂

haha cookies in closet = bag of cookie mix stored in kitchen closet 🙄

He's not a chef/baker either... it was really funny actually cause he was in the kitchen making them and the two dogs at his house were sitting there watching him as if to say, wait... what are you doing???

That's the whole point!! It's actually worse than that because of our financing deal - 4.99% (variable, but that's for now), and we only HAVE to pay interest for the first 10 years. It's through BofA, so it's a legit deal. I figure my "payments" will be ~$300/month right now. It's teeniny, but cute. It will be good to have my own place. I have to go back on Friday for the inspection, but we're not closing until May 29. I need to measure stuff to the nth degree, figure out what I've got and what I need, and move forward from there. I'll probably paint much of the interior, and it needs a couple of things - namely a garage door and most likely a roof (which I'm going to push-back to the current owner on, because he said it was ok), but that's about it.

Oh, I see. So something like wine, which ferments but doesn't use chametz, would be acceptable, but beer would not be.

Looks like you'll be making cookies in the closet as well, and sleeping, taking a shower, watching tv....🙂

Whoa....I need to check out the market too. My lease is nearing its end.

Even odds that this "house" in 4 years becomes Temple's first skyscraper after cpa gets done with it 😀.

haha aw poor dd... at least you know where to look though! I'm still stuck in the "you should look at places at mizzou but maybe still in roch" limbo.

Yeah that's true. How are you going to deal with that whole situation? Is there a certain date where you'll just give up on roch and settle on mizzou?

haha settle makes it sound so bad. I haven't really thought about it... maybe mid-June? The dean said they would probably go to the waitlist in late April, so maybe soon! I looked at last year's Roch thread and a lot of movement happened May 16th and late May. Who knows? I found an apartment complex I would like to live in if I stayed at Mizzou and I plan on sending in the graduate housing application for Roch.

Temple actually has two "skyscrapers" already! I was amazed when I saw them yesterday. They are at least 10 stories each!

Actually, I'm realistic that I'm at the top of the $/sf range of my neighborhood, and I likely would not get much back out. The back yard is absolutely SCREAMING for a beautiful wood deck, but it is not going to happen. 🙁

You guys will have to come visit if you're ever in the neighborhood.😉

Good morning!! It's cloudy and dreary in San Antonio (but warm). Typical morning around here.:hello:

Beautiful in GA. Even the pollen count is low!

Gorgeous here as well... the flowers look amazing!

And on a side note... only 13 more days of class!

Wow, I can't believe its almost graduation time again. Ill have to start a "how long until I quit my job countdown" when I figure out exactly when that is.

Just found out my rent is going up $25/mon if I renew. Guess that's what I get for making fun of dd's future H-town rent haha.

Yep, what goes around comes around! Guess this means you'll have to give up your sailing lessons.😉

How is the rent down there? Galveston isn't particularly cheap from what I remember...

How was everyone's day?

Today I went to a seminar about serotonin's effect on place learning in Drosophila... it was a lot of information/graphs w/o a real story line.

oohhh. sounds exciting!

I had a lazy day - but as I was walking down the street to get my vehicle out of the shop, I saw one of the local grocery store's scooters in the ditch beside the road (well out of sight). After I got my vehicle (and paid a LOT of money), I went to said grocery store and told the manager. She thanked me profusely and said those things are about 20 grand a piece!! If only she had thanked me with a gift card...oh, well, I did my good deed for the day.

Now I probably would have taken it home and played around with it...then of course taken it back later 😉

So I get this news letter from the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology (Because of my presenation I made last year), and it's always addressed "Dear Dr. dd (Has my real name of course)" and it always makes me grin 😀

You really wouldn't have wanted to pull it out of the ditch - it was down there, on it's side, about 1/4 mile from the store, which means the battery died...

I still have a car insurance offer my daughter received some time before her first birthday.:hardy: People are just proactive if they think they can get your money!!

Depends on what you want. Right now I'm paying 656 for ~630 sqft, all bills paid, including extended cable. its walking distance to UTMB. A loft downtown can run a lot more, though I did find an efficiency there for 450/mon all bills paid. Probably going to go check that one out now haha.

Oh yeah, that's what does it for me....bow chika bow bow.

😕 Do they offer comprehensive coverage on Hot Wheels and Tonka trucks now? Premiums for a one year old would be astronomical. I'd go with the 50 cent deductible.

I see you discovered facebook.🙂

Haha, man so I got sold out pretty bad by lacrosse! Hope she at least got something good out of it.

How lame is this - I have exactly ONE facebook friend that I actually know!!😳

That's what happens when you're me.😛 I was going through my classmates on facebook yesterday, and I looked up the info on one person who is another nontraditional, and for about 10 minutes I thought she was actually older than I!! Then I found out I was wrong. I may or may not be the oldest, but I'm definitely the best!!😉

On another note, my daughter got the Guatemala scholarship!! Now she only has to raise about $700, and after her treadmill sale, she's got $300+ already. She's going to be thrilled!🙂

80 degrees + no A/C in classrooms yet + close proximity = unfun

That's awesome about your daughter cpa!

Congrats to your daughter too 👍 Guess that means she's missing the white coat ceremony...

Yes, lacrosse is as popular as she is pretty and smart. 😛

The daughter is missing the white coat, and my parents have just changed their summer trip plans, so they will be in Eastern Europe on the day of my white coat. 🙁 I guess it will just be my boys.

Go Spurs Go, and viva Fiesta!

Congrats to her. What happened with the broken treadmill situation?

She has more friends than people I ever plan on knowing haha. Even the Mizzou janitorial staff is probably on her list.

Meh, she could just be a facebook spammer.

And don't feel too bad, none of my family made it.

haha I do have some staff members on my list, but not janitors. I have an Honors College advisor that I worked w/ last summer and then this guy that was on the Mizzou '39 judging panel asked to be my friend.

nah... never played into that craze.

So I made my boyfriend get on facebook so I could see what this whole facebook chat creepiness was about... these people come up w/ everything!

Why would you think that?🙂 I thought about it, and it wasn't easy, but everything that came to mind was just too mean. I must be getting soft....

Yes, lacrosse is as popular as she is pretty and smart. 😛
😆....oh wait you're serious aren't you cpa? 😛

I think a better analogy would have to relate lacrosse and quantities of baked goods she's churned out in the last five minutes. 😉

And don't feel too bad, none of my family made it.

I'm sort of getting worried I may have too many people going to mine. I swear every time I turn around I hear my mom talking to somebody else, "oh yeah his white coat ceremony is in august would you like to come?"

"Mom, I don't think the grocery store clerk wants to come...."

Congrats to her. What happened with the broken treadmill situation?

I didn't hear from them again, so I can only assume they got it to work. I hope. It really did work when it left my house!! It was probably something silly - like they forgot to plug it in...

Ugh...I'd almost rather have no one show up than everbody show up haha. I guess they could do the wave or something when you're on stage.

...and all this time I was worried about Kudu stooping that low...

Haha...she has such a high opinion of me😎.

...and all this time I was worried about Kudu stooping that low...

I just call 'em like I see 'em!😉

The Suns are beating up on the Spurs (again). 🙁 Hope this one ends well. That's all that really matters!

I'm not inclined to disagree with you! The whooping and hollering of parents and family members when their peeps get some recognition, award, etc. is a bit absurd these days. (Mind you, most of my experience in this these days is in middle and elementary school. "Juan Smith for not failing science two of the four nine weeks" and a large pool of people scream, and the dad hands him a bouquet of flowers...:barf:

I've (half-jokingly) told my kids they don't get a graduation party until graduate school. They don't even get birthday parties any more - I figured out a couple of years ago that I could give them $50 and everyone comes out ahead and happy.

I, however, do expect a birthday party this year.:hardy:
