out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I aspire and hope to be like you someday....

So how is it? Does it zoom zoom as advertised?

Um, kudu, I can't tell you. Its a secret that currently dd and I know, and you will have to find out on your own.

dd how is it that I was thinking of that exact video

oh haha... I dunno how the computer is really... I've used it once for a couple minutes. It came as I was about to head to Columbia to visit and I didn't bring it with me. I will play more tomorrow.

Apples? Dip?

Down to my last week of work, well almost, friday doesn't count of course. It's getting quite exciting 😀

My last day lunch is Monday. It will be pretty emotional. It's been over 11 years. You guys (except Zulu-slayer)were still in elementary school, maybe middle school when I started there, and it was by no means my first job out of college!

page 3?

Got my latest packet from A&M today with the orientation schedule. Due to my family conflicts, I think I am going to opt-out of the optional-but-strongly-recommended ropes course.

That will allow me to do what I need to do. My son has said he'll be my date for the dean's welcome dinner on Friday night, but he is refusing to go to the parent orientation prior to the white coat ceremony on Saturday.😕 Shouldn't he go to the parent orientation to see what the parent is doing? Especially since my parents will be in eastern Europe on a boat.😡

:hello: Back from Columbia... packing for Rochester. Had a good stay in Columbia, but it went waaaaay too fast. I learned that I make killer salmon, though. And this is the third time I've made the boy chocolate fudge cake, and I still haven't gotten a piece!

I went and said my goodbyes to the advisors at the Honors College (I worked there in the summer last year) and I got roped into doing what's called Scholars Day... prospective students come w/ parents and sit in this big auditorium and I stand on stage and answer questions w/ some other students and the director of the Honors College. I was talking to the director before I left and he was like so when's the big move? And I told him probably late July, and he said "Perfect! You can do Scholars Day... it's July 11" So I laughed and he was like pleaaaaaase I have no pre-meds! So I was like ugh... fine.

Oh, who am I kidding? I'm excited to do it 😛

I'm sure the goodbyes were hard - so hard that you weren't exactly successful!

So are you driving or flying to the Roach motel? If you are driving, I can just hear your (my) mom finding every excuse in the world why it just isn't right for you to go so far away to such a miserable place!! Hope you have a good trip!

hmmmm, 11 years ago, I believe I was in 7th or 8th grade 😛 Hard to believe, I feel like I'm getting old. I can't wait to tell all the young whipper snappers that when I was trying to get into med school we had to take the mcat on paper...with a pencil! 😱

And funnily enough I've only been with the company for like 5 months, but they're taking me out to lunch friday, go figure 🙂

Page 4 ate our thread!

Hope everyone's weekend was good. Normally not too happy about mondays, but it's my last monday!....:diebanana:<---- I don't think that guy liked the dancing bannana either...

The dancing bananas are a bit annoying.😉 I'm still trying to figure out when I can go into the office and do my check-out! My farewell lunch is today, but I'm still semi-employed.😉 I am not, however, receiving too much in the way of paychecks these days!

Wonder where zulu-slayer's been? Probably jumping off buildings in downtown Houston.🙄

After a few months of med school, that won't seem so irrational🙂. How was the lunch?

So the day after I told ya'll about that nice apt, I noticed on our class facebook that someone had just leased it and was looking for a roommate. Unfortunately its a she, which might be more than a little awkward...I can only imagine the looks when her parents visited haha. So, scratch that one.

I checked out an eff in a old Victorian built in the 1880's. There's actually 4 apts, two of which have 3rd year students in them. Beautiful neighborhood, with old trees in front. 10 min walk to class. Two large bed & breakfast homes nearby, one of which is owned by a former playmate of the month haha. The only place to park is right in front on the street under the huge trees. That's nice except they're very popular with the birds and the sidewalk showed it:barf:. $525 + elect and gas. Probably not worth moving from my current spot.

Got an email from one of the coed fraternities...they have a spot. Looks like a motel with a courtyard in the middle...own room and bathroom. $325 ABP, including cable and internet. Hot tub, big screen tv, ~10 min walk to class, no set lease term, and the house chef provides 9 meals a week. Not sure, but man that's hard to pass on.

Hmmm....wouldn't the temp differential effects on biochemical reactions betwen TX/GA and Rochacha mean that we will have appeared to age faster than Orbit over the weekend?

Enough hating on the bananas. What did they every do to you 😛

So are you officially unemployed now? It's a bit scary that I'll be able to say that I am in a few days. The interest free cash flow was nice while it lasted...

The frat doesn't sound like a bad idea. Can't beat that price, especially for cable and internet. We're required to use comcast, and I got quoted $75 for basic cable and high speed internet bundled (and that's with some special deal too). With no lease you can move out anytime also. Just out of curiosity what's ratio of guys to gals in the thing?

The lunch was great. Well attended, even some people I don't know who came along for free food! I'm technically still employed. My last day is officially the 30th, but I will be gone. I still have to go in and turn in my computer and fill out a jillion forms, and I've been trying to figure out when I can fit that into my schedule.😛

The frat house sounds pretty good, as long as it is not a "typical" frat house.😉

As an aside, "How It's Made" is about to do skin cultures. Waayy cool. Saw part of it while I was doing my cell bio class, and it was very cool.

I'm headed to Temple for a few days tomorrow, and unless I go somewhere, or hijack my neighbor's wireless (which I doubt exists), I won't have internet. I'll miss you sooo much!

Not sure. If I had to guess from the photos I've seen I'd say its about even.

You can't leave...that'll make me the oldest thread member again, and I don't want that mantle back haha. :luck:

I'll do my best - I'm not sure I can live without internet, and I need to get online to order window treatments and the like.😉 We certainly don't want an old kudu in charge.😱

Apparently after june 16th no texas school can give out an acceptance to someone already holding on to one at another school in the state. I got an email from a&m earlier saying I needed to withdraw. Guess I'm going to have to finally let the utmb dream die as well 🙁

On an unrelated note, I was at work today and sort of reflecting (it was a slow day 😉), and couldn't help but notice how many people I work with don't really like their job. It sort of made me wonder how people could go their entire lives in a job they completely hate. I did jobs I hated for the last 8 years and would probably have done a little skydiving of my own had I had to do it much longer 😛

Has anyone esle noticed that cpa's tongue has gotten much more informal as time has gone on? She used to be sooo polite. Now it doesn't take much to get her sassy.👍

Whatever...you're going to a great school, you got into the cheap housing, you'll be near family, and you're about to quit your job....UTMB can kiss your butt👍.

My dad worked a job he hated for about a decade because it was well paying and had good benefits. His character changed quite a bit over that time and not for the better.

As for us, I was reading a survey of 50-65 year-old physicians done last year...

"If you were starting out today, would you choose medicine as your career?"

Yes...56%
No....44%

"Would you encourage your children or other young people to choose medicine as a career today?"

Yes...43%
No.....57%

On a more positive note, although this survey done by the same people didn't get the same response rate, 92% of final year residents said they'd choose medicine again if starting over.

These were just mailouts I think and both had low response rates, but interesting anyway. Here's the link to the surveys...they ask many more questions..

:hello:

So, I met the girl I'm going to live w/ and her family... super nice. We looked at a couple of houses, apartments, and the graduate housing. I think we are leaning more towards grad housing since its on campus, and then the apartments and then the houses. Even though the house was right behind the hospital, it was 4 bedroom and I'd rather just live w/ 1 person I don't know very well rather than 3.

Kinda nervewracking going up there, though! Made me realize that its actually happening... and its kinda scary. :scared:

(Yes, I'm aware that makes me sound like a baby)

 in all honesty I probably would have chosen houston over utmb, but you know what they say about your first love.

Don't we know you from somewhere? 😛 How'd you find the room mate? Are you sure she's not an axe murder or worse...a hillary voter!...😱 haha, j/k 🙂

I know what you mean though, it was just a nice prospect down the road a few months ago, but now that I'm moving in two weeks it's getting very real very fast. I'm already stressed out with the million different things I need to do and school hasn't even started yet....for love of god will somebody please give me a coffee table!...sorry, I'm ok...

On our login page, we have this whole orientation website where we have this stuff to read, fill out, and submit. One of the sections is a roommate listing. The girls I was going to live w/ first had talked to this girl and she emailed me. She's super nice... and plays lacrosse too!

That's great and all, but what's her size and body composition? You need to find someone with a good balance of fat and protein in case you guys get snowed in and you have to throw your own Donner party.

Hardy, har, har... 🙄

You know, you'd fare pretty well being snowed in... if human skin tastes anything like chicken skin... 👎

Hello all OOSers!

I was thinking about submitting a letter to UT San Antonio to let them know why I am specifically interested in their school. On my TMDSAS I talked about why I want to move back to Texas, but since there is no secondary for San Antonio, I won't get the chance to tell them why I'd really like to go to school and live in San Antonio. I don't' want them to think they are just another check box that I clicked...

What do you think? Did any of you send letters like this to emphasize why you aren't just another OOSer?

Any advice on things I can do at this point to increase my chances would be great! Thanks!!!

Sure, why not? dd was able to clear 4 tx ints, probably because he has ties to the state, although I believe he did mention "sheer awesomeness" as another factor. I think the better you are able to convince them that you have legitimate and well thought out reasons for applying to a particular school or state, other than "that's where the dart landed on the map", the better off you'll be especially as an oos. Send it to admissions, of course. :luck:

Kudu's right it can't hurt. Though I actually didn't send any letters in until post interview. And come to think of it, I didn't put much in my p.s. about wanting to come back to texas, though in the actual interviews I did talk a lot about it.

As far as San Antonio goes and their receptiveness to communication from applicants, on a 1-10 scale they are about a -3 👎 I'm sure cpa can go on for a while about it. Dr. Kellaway at houston would probably be about as high as you can go, and utmb and a&m are in the middle. They always thanked me for my letters at least. One letter probably wouldn't hurt, but don't get overbearring or annoying with them. Don't stress out too much either if you aren't flooded with invites after your app is submitted. I got an interview at utmb a week after mine was submitted, but wasn't interviewed at houston until their second to last available date in january, with san antonio and a&m in the middle. You know where to find us if you need anything else 😛

Actually didn't have to mention it, it's a given of course 😎

Thank you for the advice! My wife and I really do want to move back to Texas and set up home in the state, I just hope I can get my foot in the door! So Dr. Kellaway is the person to send the letter to at UT Houston? And you are saying that Houston is more receptive of letters?

My cousin goes to UT Houston Med. so it would be great to go there as well. So you got an interview to UTMB really quickly? To be honest, I would be thrilled to go to any medical school in Texas, my home state!! Anyway, couldn't hurt to send a letter to those two schools...

Thanks again all!

I don't mean to say any one school is particularly more receptive than another, but the various experiences I've had with the admissions staff have proven better at the aforementioned schools.

I'm officially free :soexcited:It was sort of funny they took me out to lunch and got me this like fisherprice docotors kit, the kind with a big plastic stethoscope and a bunch of lollipops to "give to all my patients."

Now I'm flying down to houston on monday to turn in all my immunization records, orderwhite coat, look at where I'm going to live, etc. I'm getting awfully excited 😀

Doesn't work. Don't bother with San Antonio. Can you tell I'm just a bit bitter? Can't hurt, either, but it won't work.

Ok, I'm back!!!:hello: I can't tell you the last time I worked this hard and accomplished seemingly less. Over the past 5 days, I scraped, painted, scrubbed, dealt with contractors, etc. They know me by name at Lowe's. 😉 (really! I was walking through there the day after I set up my appointment to have my roof looked at and the guy yelled across the store Hey! CPA! totally funny! Nice guy. Lousy bid!)

My next-door neighbor is the type who talks way too much, but the type you really want to have as your next-door neighbor. She's going to take my trash out on Monday.

I met my M-2 buddy. She's pretty cool, too. She sold me all her first year books (unopened) for next to nothing. She and her fiance (now husband) shared books all last year, so hers were never opened. Her husband is even going to mow my grass for me!!😀

It feels very weird, and very real. I didn't sleep much or well, and hardly ate all week. My husband actually came last night and I had a honey-do list for him today, which was awesome! He's so great. 😍

It's time to go scrape paint out of my hair, and go to bed in my bed!

Hello! Hope everyone's weekend was good... and have a good trip tomorrow dd!

I went to the Muny (outdoor theatre) on Friday w/ my boyfriend who came in town... we saw the Producers. It was hilarious! Anyone seen it? Oh, and I got a TDaP and a PPD test Friday also... that dang TDaP doesn't hurt at all when you get it, but sleeping on that arm was a bad choice 👎

So, my roommate and I were just about to send in our apps for the apartment we chose when the realtor her dad goes through called him and told him about this house in the neighborhood behind the hospital. They went and checked it out and sent me pictures... its really cute. He put a bid on it last night so we're keeping our fingers crossed. I'll show pictures if we get it!

Oh, and exi, I think cpa was just saying that SA isn't really receptive to notes about wanting to live in that area (as w/ her predicament), not that SA is a bad school.

Yep, that's what I meant. My experience (and that of some other people) is that their admissions office is not easily swayed in a favorable direction, even when there are extenuating circumstances, or even when you know people who know people.

The house thing sounds great, lacrosse! By putting a bid on it, does that mean they're hoping to buy it?

Have a great trip, dd! Hope you have good Texas weather, too! It's been horrible here...no rain!

Oh, my rant of the week...it's primarily against a guy named Mark, but it is advice for the rest of you. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put latex paint over oil-based paint without sanding first. Even if you prime, it will fall off. That's what I faced this week in Temple. All the 5 miles of woodwork in the house are peeling their relatively fresh paint. 😡

Yep! And I got news that they actually closed on it today! Hooray! I attached a picture of the outside of it.

😕 There's more than one type of paint???? Kidding... was hoping I'd make you smile a bit.

Oh, and by the way... over on one of the Mizzou threads, someone was telling me that I will be missed (kudu and dd, stop laughing) and then said "what happened to your 'the todd' avatar? I liked it better"... We must find and torture this outsider.

Cute house!! But wait! I'm confused.😕 They put a bid on it one day and closed the next? Life just doesn't happen that way, except in TV movies.😉

Congrats! May it have healthy paint!!

Haha, yeah well maybe not for those above the lowly middle class. I smell a rich roomate, good job lacrosse 🙂 Nice house though 👍

See you guys in a couple days, I'll more than likely keep tabs via blackberry 😉

Look who's talking about lowly middle class, Mr. dd Blackberry!

I paid "cash" for my casita, and we still took 6 weeks to close (mostly by choice). You still have to (hopefully) get it inspected, checked for bugs, get the title (or escrow) company to do their thing, etc., which usually takes at least a week.

My kids come home today! Hooray! I actually have missed them!😍

 My bad, my bad... I was typing that post while watching something that said the word close and automatically thought that was what I was supposed to write. I meant signed. Sorry for the confusion 😀

I hate it when that happens! It happens to me, too, that I'll be talking to someone and type what they say!!

At least I've made some progress today. The insulation people called me from my casita lookinng for the key, so I know they were there! They even got the key while I was on the phone with them.👍 And my kids are home.👍 And my front door people are ready to install my new front door.👍 We are moving forward!!🙂

Glad cpa is back. I was starting to miss that ol' fart.😛

Congrats dd on exiting the gig with a lunch and presents instead of getting hanged. You're a pro.😉

Haha. I have (or had, don't know if he still is) an uncle on their adcom...I didn't get int'd there.😀

😕 There's more than one type of paint????

Haha...no seriously, is there? Cute house btw.

From paraglider training yesterday. The top one is shortly after takeoff on a practice run. The second is from groundschool. No, that's not me in the green leaning right...that's just part of the simulator frame. I'm against the atv.

Dear fellow M&M avatar folks,

25R. This is not good.

Posted a thread over in "What're my chances, man?!" - you can find that here. What say you guys?

Glad cpa is back. I was starting to miss that ol' fart.😛

What, may I ask, did I or that ATV ever do to you?????!!!!😛

Yes ma'am!

Yesterday was bittersweet though. I left at 6:30 am and got back at 9:30pm. On my way back there had been an accident on the causeway and the whole thing was blocked. Everyone just kinda got out of their cars and enjoyed the view over the water for about 30 min. The car was smashed up pretty bad and today I found out a 5 mon old died in the crash.🙁

Does there really need to be a cause? :meanie:

So....how long till you turn that modest abode into a 5 bd, 3 story brick home? I'm sayin' 3.5 weeks if you take the afternoons off.

anybody notice how close we're getting to 2000??

So at 6 am, my husband asked me if we'd had any plumbing issues yesterday. I had noticed a few odd little things, but nothing major - the shower didn't drain quite as fast as normal, and at one point the toilet water level was not in its normal place. No big deal.

Well, at some point yesterday (likely when the upstairs toilet was flushed), the sewer line backed up into my shower!:barf: Now I get to add "plumber" to my list for the day, which already includes "air conditioner," "stove repair," "insulation," and "painter." I think I'll go back to Temple where my new hot water heater is being installed today without any intervention by me. 🙄

Major bump.

So that research award I got for my poster presentation way back in April... my PI emailed me today telling me he thought I would like to know that the lab received 250 bucks from me winning that award. I was like uh, great... why the heck don't I get it??? 👎

And exi... I dunno what to tell you, it's a tough call. But, I do think you should give yourself a little time (more than just less than 1 month) to really study for the MCAT since if you take it a 3rd time and for some reason don't get in this year, it might not look that great to have to take it for a 4th time for next season. Just my 2 cents. Luck w/ whatever you do, buddy :luck::luck::luck::luck:

Thank you thank you. The plan is to, well, plan on an August 5th retake, as much as I hate to do that for the third time. I have been told, and the MSAR confirms, that my sectional scores do not entirely place me out of the running, so there is that, I guess. I'm just trying to find out whether there's a good chance I might be rejected outright before then, because if I could land several interviews as is, well, would a retake be 100% necessary?

Tricky situation. I hate this waiting/uncertainty thing. 🙁

I'm back! :hello: So I guess I'm all set now. The nice ladies in the free clinic where I was turning in my immunization records were even kind enough to give me my missing tb test. I was a tad hesitant as I was leaving today, and wasn't sure who I would have look at it, but she wasn't concerned and just told me watch my arm and let them know the if anything pops up. The most exciting part was of course getting my white coat 😀 I wanted to wear it back on the flight home, but figured I'd look kind of silly 😳 I also realized that it is going to be sort of a pain in the butt living so close to downtown. Hopefully the shuttle and light rail will solve some of the woes.

I don't think the schools in texas, as far as I'm aware, do much rejecting out right. Like with houston they review files every week until they run out of interview spots which doesn't occur until decemberish. You could plan on taking the mcat without telling anyone, or reporting it to tmdsas until your scores come back. That way if your scores are higher and you have had some interviews you can just release the scores and throw out a letter of update to the schools. And if you hadn't had any interviews there will still be some time left hopefully for some. Definitely don't just squeeze in another mcat just because you can, only do it if you are beyond positive it'll go up a couple more points :luck:
