I'm sure this has been asked before, but where can I find the percent of out-of-state students accepted at each school? Does it really matter as long as it is a private school?

Contact individual school for more info. I'm OOS medical student and yes, it looks like private schools care less about your residency. Once again contact them since noone has accurate answer.

Hope this helps

Keep in mind that at some schools, the reason you may see a higher percentage of ISS at a school is because those schools are more likely to recieve more applications from students located near them.

Very true, especially in the northeast and Cali, where there's a high density of pre-meds in desirable locations. Think: Western, Touro-MI, NYCOM, Touro-NY, UMDNJ.

The stats for in-state acceptance at NYCOM is 55%

For out of state acceptance it is <2%.

So it's not just a fact of there being more pre-meds there, they are mandated to accept a certain # of in-staters.

Sorry, my post was unclear. I haven't studied the numbers or anything. I was just pointing out that you get a lot of applicants in Cali/NY, and I know that some of the schools appear to have in-state preferences when in actuality they don't care. They just have tons and tons of IS apps.

Where's this NYCOM data from, though?

Id also like to know the source, and also im not understanding this clearly if someone could clarify... if 55% are IS and less then 2% are OOS then what happened to the other 43% of applicants

I think it means this:

Entering class of 100 students:

100 OOS apps: 2 admitted (2% successful)

178 IS apps: 98 admitted (55% successful)

This data is directly from US News "Ultimate Guide to Medical Schools"

I would be happy to provide more stats from the book if you want, just ask.

And actually, contrary to your reasoning, for NYCOM, there were 3611 OOS applicants and 825 IS applicants for Fall 2007....so that just goes to show they heavily prefer in state.

This is older data than I usually cite, but in 04-05, NYCOM had 35% out of state students. That's not nearly as high as a state supported school like MSUCOM or TCOM. I'm really not convinced they have an overwhelming IS preference.

I have many threads on here about NYCOM bieng IS friendly. I have 3 people that I know of that were accepted to NYCOM from nj. It may just be a regional preference, who knows.

Among those schools that accept high percentage of students from out of state, what are the schools that select students in preferred regions? For example, I know that VCOM selects many students from Virginia (of course) and Appalachian area. What is the chance that students who are not coming from these regions get into VCOM?

I was wondering about this too. Beside schools with more OOS students acceptances, Is there any schools that I'd have a better chance as a Maryland resident? Even I doubt that there's one 🙂, but I'm just asking. There's no DO school at MD, and I have not decided where to apply either.
