How do you find the oxidation number of Cu(NO3)2 ?

Cu(s) + HNO3(aq) --> Cu(NO3)2(aq) + NO(g) + H2O(l)

I forget if you just do Cu=0---> Cu= +2 or something like 2Cu+ 2N+ 6*-2.....N doesn't have a oxidation number of -3 right?

Thankssss

NO3 has a negative charge. Therefore to cancel it out, Cu must have a +2 oxidation state.

NO3= -1 but since there are two of NO3's so it is -2 therefore Cu has to be +2.

If you have trouble with these types of problems, I'd suggest that you look into your general chemistry textbook and memorize the common polyatomic ions and their respective formal charges.
