I imeddie Full Member 10+ Year Member 15+ Year Member Jul 1, 2008 #2 N is 5, O is -2; so X + 5 + -6 = 0 ; X = +1 is Ag's oxidation number Upvote 0 Downvote

N is 5? does that mean Group 5 is 3, Group 6 is 4, and group 7 is 5 in periodic table? by the way, is it always 5? becuz in KNO2, N is +3, not 5. Last edited: Jul 1, 2008 Upvote 0 Downvote

That's how I would do it too. Remember your oxidation rules in the correct orders. O = -2 x 3 = -6 N = +5 therefore Ag has to equal +1 in order for the neutral compound to equal zero .
