P&S countdown (yea, I'm THAT guy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
according to last years version of this thread, the admissions office confirmed that not all acceptance letters were mailed on the same day - half were mailed on a friday and the rest on the following monday. so, i wouldn't fret too much if nothing comes by thursday. good luck

Best of luck to all those who are waiting. I can sense the nervousness in this thread, and I sincerely hope all of y'all get in. 🙂

Priority mail only gets useful the further you get away from the place it's being sent from. Sending something priority from NYC to Philly won't save any time compared to sending it first class, both will usually arrive two days after it was sent. However, sending a parcel from NYC to LA by priority is where it has it's usefulness, in that it is garunteed to reach there within 3 days, where first class can take 4-5 days. The other thing with priority is that you can track them with delivery confirmation, something that's not available if you use just first class. I don't believe you have to sign for priority mail, just express mail which is garunteed overnight. As for anything reaching anyplace within the same day, that's not going to happen. The best one could hope for is next day. For same day delivery, you'd have to hire an courier service. There are a number of indipendent companies who do this, and Fed Ex and UPS all have a few services like that, but it's all very expensive.

I'm nervous.

🙁

I share the nervousness everything has...but here's how I look at it...for those of us who are not fortunate enough to goto Columbia next year, we can always go back to New York Presbytarian for residency in the future...good luck! 😉

good luck everyone! just remember that there may be several variants of the waitlist letter that dr. frantz sends so don't read too much into your chances just because he sounded enthuisiastic in the letter.

Hey,
I know this is getting a little frivolous, but does anyone know if priority mail can reach ny/nj area the same day, i.e. Tuesday?

the mail is picked up at 11 am at the earliest at P&S in NYC. All mail to be delivered must be at the USPO in the city to be delivered to by 9 am in the morning there.

Not possible unless you wanna hire Marty McFly to deliver the mail in his delorian. Good old flux capacitator.
🙄

Are you actually from the South? There, y'all is singular and all y'all is plural🙂. Anyway, are you not caring about P&S anymore? Just noticed the y'all instead of the we? Maybe I'm just too paranoid about language cause of taking linguistics.

You can never go wrong with the flux capacitor. I see him having trouble getting to 88mph on broadway though.

hey, anyone want me to stop by and hold up the office during my lunch hour to find out who got in?

Did Calbee get in?
what?
I said did Calbee get i you *********ing ****! Tell me or you die!!!!
But I don't know who Calbee is? He's not listed as an applicant. Did you apply? Who are you?
umm...TheFlash!
You mean Wally West? But we don't have you as applying either?

Take Riverside instead of Broadway. Only shot you'll have around here.

Good work Coops. Same day mail? Come on--it isn't that hard to wait a few days. I am just as anxious as everybody else, but Thursday, Friday, Saturday-I don't really care. The last thing I am gonna do is analyze mail delivery patterns. I care deeply about becoming a doctor and really want to get into P&S, but not enough to surrender my pride, dignity, sanity, and testicles. No offense to anybody.

Yee-haw, to a New Yorker, anything below Pennsylvania is probably The South. Yeah, I'm still very interested in Columbia, but probably not as much as some of the other people on this thread. I don't think my vested interest in the school has reached dizzying levels.

I've heard that there's been an impostor Flash sighting in the P&S office recently. Would you happen to know anything about that, Mr. Rendar? 😉

Hey guys,

Just called columbia and was told that they're mailing letters TOMORROW (argh), just so you can all adjust your expectations. 🙁 Good luck, all!

--Grumps

All this nervousness is making me tired, both mentally and physically. I really hope I get something other than a rejection this week. I don't know if I could bring myself to come back to the message boards if I were turned down, at least not right away. It would be quite painful to see people who got in talking about it. The last school I was this excited about was UVA, and they gave me the finger, and I spend the entire week afterwards in my room drinking large volumes of beer 🙁 I better stock up for this week.

I'm holding Columbia responsible for my complete lack of productivity at work today (and probably the rest of the week for that matter).

ahhah, amen to that. i've been staring at some spreadsheets and synopses for a while.

thanks for the info, grumps.

Good luck everybody. Here we go...

LOL!!! If we start analyzing the waitlist letters, then THAT will really be funny. Even better - if the waitlist letter says, "I just want to assure you that we'll keep you very strongly in mind" I think I am just going die from hysterical laughter...and sorrow.

Here we go again.......
I hope they are better than UCLA last week. The wait really make us crazy.....😴 :meanie: 😕 Good Luck to All of Us.:horns:

I second Bonnie's bump. Has anyone's mail been delivered yet today? Even news that a Columbia item wasn't included in the day's post would be news worth knowing. Sitting at work, three subways from home, is sort of a killer.

I just called the office. They said they began sending out decision letters YESTERDAY and will continue today. Hold on to your seat...

Does anyone know if they're sending acceptances by priority mail this year? Would the acceptance be pretty thick?

Just want to prepare myself.

Confirmed from an M1 working with the adcom that letters were out yesterday. Anyone know if they send out emails too? Nuts, NYU put me on waitlist and want an LOI by Monday. I don't know what to do since my response depends on p&s. Maybe send them a general LOI now that's non-committing and then follow up with a you're-my-first-choice LOI later? Or should I hold off till Monday, have the p&s answer and then email NYU the same day? Thoughts welcome...

Ok, just to pop some of the anxiety in this thread, I'm going to predict an alternate list letter heading my way. I can also predict that it's most probably due to my worthless interview with a haughty surgery doc that lasted all of 15 mins.

Yay for me! 😎

ShuMed: when NYU asks for a LOI, it isn't asking for a real commitment from you. A lot of schools ask for LOI's as your formal response post-decision. The LOI simply serves to hold a place in the class or on the waitlist. The AAMC regulations still hold, and you don't really have pick a school until May 15. You should feel free to send that LOI to NYU right now and then withdraw it this afternoon if necessary.

i'm going crazy with the waiting ... last night i actually dreamt that i was accepted by e-mail (which doesn't happen obviously) ... but it shows how much i'm fantasizing right now ...

Yeah, I'm in the same position, ShuMed. I'm going to send my letter to NYU today to reserve my spot on the waitlist.

I was slightly depressed the past couple of days just b/c I almost feel that Columbia prefers elite people--You know, people who are accomplished musicians or olympic gold winner. I have a solid application, but I don't feel that I have anything that's really special. Also, I had better luck at schools that place relatively less emphasis on research experience, and Columbia doesn't really fall into this category.

So I guess I have to wait to find out. I REALLY wanna move to Manhattan next year!

I noticed that P&S does favor the ivy league undergrads more than anything. They gave out a facebook at the interviews, and you can see that more than half the class comes from the ivy league. It's pretty intimidating knowing you're already behind the ball in that regard.

That's funny Dara - I actually had a dream that I got an e-mail acceptance too. Maybe it's a Northwestern thing? Anyway, the worst part was that it was one of those dreams when you wake up and you don't initially realize it was a dream. I sat through my entire history of science class without listening to a word the prof said. The wait is really getting to me. Damn it! Good luck today, everyone. I hope some of us get nice big envelopes.

periodic -- are you going to tell them they are your 1st choice?
calbea -- yeah, they do prefer ivies, but your profile DOES look very solid and they do keep diversity in mind, so in my humble opinion you're doing great.

Congrats Miss Bonnie!

Was it a fat envelope and priority mail?
