Pacific Class of 2008 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Googled "caveman." I don't think that guy was posing, I think someone just took his drumstick and an accomplice snapped a quick photo.

For me to wear that 1st day will cost $298,000. And for that price I'll throw in grunt-speak all day long.

Yup, just played poker with him the other day. I've known that slacker since high school. He used to try to kill me when we went mountain biking. How do you know Justin? Do you know Carlos too?

I went on a trip to Asia with him at the end of last year. We play poker once in a while too usually with a bunch of third years. I'll tell him to give you a call next time we play. Yeah, I know Carlos.

wait isnt tamago the sushi with egg on top? you crazy

Alright, I officially had my first dream about Matriculation Day. Nothing embarassing or anything, I just couldn't find any good shoes to wear... Like that's the only thing I'm worried about! 🙄 I'm thinking I had the dream because everyone put their pictures up - it's nice to have images to go with names

Speaking of pics, I like your new pic Sherm, you did look a little young in the other one 😀

Anyboby else obsessively thinking about the first day or weeks of dental school? I doubt that I'm alone on this one...

Yeah, Im wondering what it will be like. What do I wear? I forgot the dress code. Does anhyone know how long well have to be there? I think it starts at like 730 am. Jess, just wear those shoes form Neiman Marcus.

I havn't had any dreams directly related to starting dental school, but I had pretty weird one the other day about post-graduation.

Somehow in my dream, I killed someone or something so I got sent to jail. But since I was a dentist, they sent me to some minimum security country club in connecticut. So I drove my ass out there and then found out that because i was going to jail, I wouldn't be able to make my car payments. The bank repoed my car and sold it to these punk kids who crashed and totaled it like 2 minutes after i handed over the keys. I also ran into my friend Justin (the one that graduated from UOP last year). He was just getting out of jail, I guess he got caught up in some armed robbery thing by accident. Anyway, we were talking about dentistry and he said that I most likely wouldn't be allowed to practice ever again since I would be a convicted felon. My first thought was "Damn, how the hell am I ever gonna be able to pay back my loans for UOP?!" 😱

yeah, it's the asian curse. I'm gonna be middle aged and balding, yet still get carded when I order a glass of wine. 😡

I've started getting everything done for the Physical Exam and it's taking a lot longer than I thought it would (I'm currently on my third visit to the Health Center and already scheduled to go back at least twice!). So, I just wanted to warn you guys, so that you start working on getting everything done. If you haven't read the sheet yet, you have to track down all of your immunization records and get two TB skin tests a couple weeks apart from one another (each skin test requires two visits).

I also was advised by my doctor to get the Hep A vaccine (which is not required by Pacific) - does anyone have any thoughts on this? This is the oral and fecal born Hep strain, the one you need to get if you go to Africa, for example. I think I will go ahead and get it since we will, afterall, be working in the oral cavity and, who knows ?(insert anal joke here)..... I know that San Francisco is going to provide us with some very interesting (and quite a few hygienically-challenged) patients over the next couple of years!

Sorry I'm acting like a Mom, but everyone go get a Doctors appt soon!

Hey guys congrats. I too have made the decission to attend the best dental school in the country (and add my name and alias to the list). I have started on the health requirements and am not sure where to go for the TB test. I went to my family doc and he doesn't do them then I went to uni-lab/quest diagnotics and no luck there either.

Jess, I see that you from SB (captain obvious strikes again, I know). Do you know a girl named Amy that went to UCSB then moved to S. California and is now dating a guy named Wayne?

Well, I came up with the name when I saw the egg that I was eating while trying to register for SDN.
How's that crazy??

Nope, I don't think I know her.... It seems strange that your Dr. doesn't do the TB test - you should ask him/her for a recommendation of where to get it. I'm not sure if your in LA but here's a link to TB testing sites:

TB testing in LA

of course the useful part is "under construction", but maybe you can try the phone number at the bottom.

Good Luck

Yeah, I was in Sapporo from 2000-2002 pretending to teach English for JET. I wish I had gone as a student instead, would have been a completely different experience.

Ok so I admit this is kinda random...anyone else here like to run? Are there any good paths/scenic areas that are good for running in sf?

Jess, I think I got that one before starting undergrad...my physician also reccommended it. Its probably not a bad idea to go ahead with. 👍

I like to run! Although I go in and out of "being a runner" - I don't run much in Santa Barbara (because UCSB's new gym is awesome) but I do when I'm back in the Bay Area. Here's some links:

Bay Area Trails
I have run (or hiked) a lot of these trails. Pacific is pretty close to the Crissy field run.

More SF trails

Maybe this will get you inspired!

I went about 2 weeks ago for my physical. Since I wasn't sure where my immunization records were, the doctor took blood titres to test for the antibodies and to check to see if I had recieved the Hep B vaccination (I think I got it a few years back when I though I was going to live in Eastern Europe for a couple of years). So, I'm just waiting on the lab results to verify Hep B, but the titres made it so I didn't need to dig up the immunization records for the other stuff.

Anyway, since my first visit a couple of weeks ago, I've been in twice a week also (mostly for the TB shot). I was supposed to go in today for them to check the second TB test (it's negative), but they were closed. So, I'll be all finished with most everything on the physical form this Monday (unless they find out I didn't actually recieve the Hep B vacc).

I love your new photo Cyrus! They are sooo adorable...

I got the Hep B titer as well because I only got the first two shots in the series when I was 15 (which is apparently routine if you get at that age), but Pacific wants all three dates. So hopefully I've got the antibodies, still waiting to find out...

Kelly - I'm up for Thursday night! Does anyone know what we are actually doing on July 8th? or how about the computer day on Saturday? I sure hope that isn't an all day thing...

Alright, I'm gonna go enjoy the sun. I've got to enjoy it as much as possible before we dive into the foggy SF summer. 😀

Thanks! The kids are a lot of fun. It's a picture from our trip to SF last week.

It's good to know Saturday has the option of being short. I'd rather enjoy my last free weekend hiking with the family--but with my luck it'll be raining all day.

Jessica, Do you know what we are suppose to do if we cant track down our immunization records or remember what weve been vaccinated for? I was just wondering because im going to the doctor on monday, and im afraid im cutting it short. Anyways, thursday night sounds great, maybe those of us that know SF well can suggest a place to go ( Im new to the city). Maybe you or Sherman know. Take care

I must admit those are some really cute kids.

Another good idea for Thursday night/evening might be a barbeque--that way I could bring my kids. There are plenty of parks in the area, and there are enough of us on SDN to make it interesting--basketball, frisbee, volleyball. We could all bring something and then there would be enough for everybody. Just a thought.

ya i am definitely down for a BBQ and for some drinks after. Heck might as well do both. thursday it is.

The BBQ idea is a good idea, then those that want to go get drinks like me Nick can go out. That way we can be in a placelike a park where we can actually talk to one another and get to know each other and those with kids can bring their kids, then go and have some fun`drinking. Anyone know of a good park around there with BBQ pits?

Golden Gate Park would probably be pretty nice to have the BBQ at. There are designated picnic/bbq areas, plenty of open grass for whatever game we wanna play, and also playgrounds for those of us with kids. I'll give them a call on Monday and see if we need to reserve a spot or not. I know weekends get kinda crowded, but I would think it's pretty dead in the middle of the week. Hopefully the weather holds up...never know in SF.

BBQ, Drinks, both! count me in for enjoying the last day of freedom for as far as I can see. 😀

Hello everyone! Just adding my name to the list. I too am having a fun time tracking down my immunization records and getting those TB tests taken care of. I was really surprised by the lack of organization of a certain hospital's medical records department. (We won't mention any names.) I'm so glad that the weather is warming up, the trees are blossoming, and I've got some awesome camping trips planned for these next couple of months! Now if only I were already through with my finals life would be complete. Sorry my picture is so fuzzy. I think I might need to go to that remedial computer class so I can learn to resize photos. A BBQ Thursday evening sounds awesome. I'll bring a volleyball and whatever else. Just let me know. Have fun!

Hey UOPers:

I'm just writing to confirm that the running scene in S.F. is AWESOME!! Not only is there Golden Gate Park, etc. right by UOP, but there are a million gorgeous trails in the Bay Area. (For all the real running fanatics, the trails in Marin and the trails in the Berkeley and Oakland hills [especially the East Ridge/West Ridge Bayview trails] are amazing!)

There are also a ton of local road races that are a lot of fun. (For example, I just ran my first half-marathon in the city in 1:16!)

p.s. The whole "Cal Runner" thing is because I ran for UC Berkeley in undergrad - GO BEARS!

Good luck guys!!! UOP Rocks!

it's good to hear you are a runner(and obviously a very good one at that) , I played tennis for UCSD, maybe you can get me off my butt and back in shape...i could use some motivation

oops apparently you are going to UCLA, have fun, i guess i will have to find my motivation elsewhere

I didn't pick up tennis until after college so if you don't mind slowing your roll on the court, I will motivate you to play.

Nice new pic, keep 'em coming.

I just got off the phone with the reservation people at the park. They told me that if we have less than 25 people, we're not required to reserve a spot. I just have to call a couple weeks in advance to make sure everything not already reserved by other people. She told me that Thursdays should typically be pretty open.

Below are links to the picnic site rules and also a map of the park. The place I have in mind is called Marx Meadow and should be numbers 12 and 13 on the map. There are bbq pits that are usable, but if anyone has a weber they can bring or at least a charcoal starter, we'd prolly save an hour trying to start the fire.

Picnic sites and Rules

Map of Golden Gate Park
http://www.sfgate.com/traveler/acrobat/maps/1999/ggparkmap.pdf

So once we get a final head count, maybe by mid-June, then I can then make the arrangements with the park.

Sweet. Put me down for 5. Only need 20 more people now. I've got a little gas grill I can bring, but it can only do 6 burgers at a time. If I bring mine and some other people bring theirs we should be good. I imagine we will do bring your own meat (or if your vegetarian--your own veggies). Maybe we could each bring something else like chips, drinks, salad, etc to share.

ya i have a mini weber as well, it can cook 5 hamburgers and about 2 hot dogs if you put them right in between the hamburgers, possibly one zucchini cut up as well 🙂, might not be a bad idea though to make a reservation, esp since I wouldn't be surprised if there are more than 25 of us.

Hey everyone. I have been thiniking about what I am going to try to do to relieve a little stress when there's time. I've been noticing people mention here and there tennis, running, vollyball, frisbee. What I was hoping we could do is list some of the things we're interested in with the hopes that others will have some similar interests and we might be able to organize (loosely) some way to meet up and play sports on weekends. I'm not sure the best way to organize it. I'll try listing ideas then people can put their names next to it. If anyone has a better way feel free to reorganize.

I don't know anything about golf, but I do know that the Presidio Golf course is very close to Pacific. Check out their website:

Presidio Golf Course

I mountain bike (although mainly due to my boyfriend's influence - he's very into it). There are some great trails in Marin - it is of course the place where mountain bikes were invented! (I personally know some of the originators - and my Dad still has a couple of cruisers he modified back in the 70s ) I need I new bike though....

I also workout a lot. I'm pretty good with weights too... does anybody have any recommendations for, or experience with the gyms in the area? I know there are quite a few of them around Pacific, I will definitely be looking into it as soon as I move up.

I added the skiing category, we for sure need to do some trips to Tahoe - so much fun!
