My friend, we'll call him "Matt*" is interested in going into peds, problem is, he is a he at a place where few men go into peds. Will there be a day when men will be a complete novelty in paediatrics? And do you think this imbalance is ok?

You mean the Unites States? Just having fun, but last I heard there was a 70/30 split in favor of the women across the board. Are you talking about somewhere more skewed than that? I don't think men will ever be a complete novelty in peds, in fact I think our numbers might increase. Many of the reasons for the imbalance are social and those won't change. But, I think peds is working hard to be taken more seriously as a field (i.e., not just "for people who love kids"), and this might negate some of the social issues. BTW, I'm not suggesting that the imbalance is good or bad, or that the social factors involved are unimportant or frivolous. I'm just offereing my opinion on the possible reasons.

I guess i'm the exception to the rule being a male going in to pediatrics but maybe because its pediatric emergency medicine that makes it more masculine. 😛

The current residency split of about 70/30 F/M has been relatively stable for a while as I recall in the US. I have no idea what will happen in the future or if it is different in countries with paediatricians instead of pediatricians 😉. I rather doubt the ratio would ever exceed 80/20, but who knows or cares?

I have never heard of it being an issue for private practice or academic, general or specialty physicians in terms of family acceptance. So, I guess the question is, what is the concern if it's 70/30 or 80/20 or 50/50, etc?

Ditto. I'm a guy going into a program with approximately a 25/75 ratio M:F. It doesn't bother me in the slightest - but the critical care fellowship I hope to do afterwards usually comes into the conversation if I'm talking to other guys. Also, I do wish the next Harriet Lane would be a little more gender-neutral. Come on, hot pink? Really?

The copy I have has a green cover. If you don't like the pink cover, there's always electrical tape 😉
