Hi everyone,

I started a thread below about possibly leaving medicine; feel free to read it if you like. There was one topic that came up that I thought deserved its own thread. What opportunities exist for part time work as a licensed MD without completion of a residency? I've found one company called Censeo health that you can do physicals for on a PRN basis, but unfortunately they don't operate in my state. Does anyone have any similar or different ideas?

Thanks in advance.

There have been many, many SDN threads started on this topic. The answer is that there are not many outside of prison work and stuff like preemployment physicals.

I would suggest using the search function.

Can you work for the VA without being BC/BE (obviously not in a specialist role)?
What about working as an in-house physician for a corporation? I know large corporations typically hire physicians for routine work related stuff. I am not clear if they require a occ med residency, but I can see where a residency wouldn't necessarily be required to be an employee at Hewlett Packard or Exxon Mobil or something.

After searching for less than a minute, here is the first job I found: A GP with the Army that requires only one PGY year and pays $110-$210k/year.

Thanks for everyone's help. If anyone has anything else to offer I would really appreciate it.

Legally, sure. Practically, probably not -- they get plenty of BC applicants for most physician job listings (there are some very appealing aspects of working for the federal government (hours, benefits, job security) that make these often not an "any warm body" type employment.

There's a few full-time gigs that could utilize your skills, but for part-time work, you're basically useless. You could teach a couple courses at community college for damn near nothing I guess. Might as well start looking at jobs outside medicine. Or, ya know, just finish residency and open a million doors.

I'm currently a GMO in the military and am using my license (obtained after one year of PGY-1) to perform social security disability exams; I'm not sure where you're located, and it's mind-numbing work but provides a decent compensation rate. However, I am only doing this to fill time and earn extra money prior to starting residency next year as a civilian so I don't view it as a long-term gig or the most stable job out there with respect to income as a physician. Definitely do not go the Army route mentioned above.

There's lots of non-clinical work for non-board certified DOs and MDs. These are things like medical writing that don't pay that well. You can also do TV medicine as TV studios do not care about board certification.

You can do Medicare advantage physicals for companies like Censeo for $100 a pop. But, it's really boring and tedious.

But if you want any other clinical options, you need to be board certified.
