Frankly, my take on those who rail against college athletes is that it's simply based on the fact that they were not athletically talented enough to be one of them.

If basketball or football brings in money, they should get to spend some of it. This allows people who never would have been able to attend college to do so, and yes, there is abuse within the system but that can easily be resolved with better oversight.

agreed👍

the truth though (lets be honest) is that many of the people who play at the top notch programs in football and basketball shouldnt have graduated from HS..

I'm not railing on college athletes; while I wasn't one for medical issues, my brother was and got through 4yrs of a very good college on a football scholarship... my comment was more aimed at 1) ridiculous boosters & 2) not spreading the wealth. the athletes take the risks of injury and while some do indeed try to get a free education out of their gifts, many don't - and injuries can effectively tear their world asunder... sooooo, why not spread the cash around and actually pay these guys (and gals) to play? it's not like it would take a significant bite out of the revenue stream, yanno?

and EF, your reason is why i think what I just wrote. SC, i humbly apologize if i in any way offended. d=)

ps - SC, would also add that by spreading the wealth, the gymnastics & water sports would benefit, as well.

Coming from someone who had MULTIPLE scholie offers and someone who played with 4 current NFLers including 3 who have made the pro bowl.

Pretty safe to safe that any D1 althete played with the best.

I wasn't offended - just making a statement regarding what I believe to be true 🙂. Sorry, everyone around here calls me "socute" so when you wrote SC I didn't realize!!!

I am against paying college athletes, although the stipends some receive are relatively *ahem* generous.

As far as spreading the wealth around, which I think would be lovely, it contradicts the idea that the team that brings in the most $$$ should benefit from it. Now, every university takes a chunk of each research grant that's coming in, so I certainly don't have issues with universities laying claim to a significant portion of the athletic money and allocating it as they see fit - but ultimately the teams that bring home the bacon ought to eat at the head table. Even if those aren't "my" teams.

Drunk wrestling is never a good idea. Especially when your opponent/friend loses her balance and falls on your knee.

I broke my foot at a wedding. While dancing.

No, I was not drunk.

I just really wished I was... especially when the marriage was over within six months.

I assume you know that the big time sports programs end up paying for some of the ones that dont make money. It is part of the socialist structure of the NCAA. Another name for it is title 9.

Otherwise rowing would never recieve funding and (im not being sexist) neither would a lot of women's sports. I dont see them selling $75 tickets for womens field hockey or lacrosse. Im just saying..

You are correct, BUT I think the point is that collegiate athletics were intended to be about the sport, not ticket sales.

So what did OSU-you-know-who finally do/say do get himself booted from SDN?

Oh, that sucks. Was it at least a good wedding (up until the fracture, that is)?

No. The ceremony was a full on Catholic mass and horrid dress affair, and the reception hall smelled like rotten cottage cheese.

No lie. I have witnesses. She ended up cheating on her new hubby (a non med student) with a med student from my class (who had been invited to the wedding, mind) within six weeks of the wedding.

So classy.

intentions.. lol... if that were the case Stanford, Duke, Michigan, Cal, UVA and a slew of other "academic" centers would never have a chance to play.

BTW there is a reason why the first couple of Heisman winners went to academic powerhouses like U Chicago, etc.. which now no longer has a team..

weird.. he is in the 2 dudes bowl.. i wonder if he has been asked?

However, you are thinking of football as the end-all, be-all. As you mention Duke, there is a certain sport that brings in BUCKETS of cash every late-fall through winter. However, Mike Kryszsewski and (formerly) Dean Smith REALLY push(ed) academics. Michael Jordan even kept his promise to come back and graduate; the rumor was that he almost broke Dean Smith's heart when he left before graduating.

There are a BUNCH of Division-I scholarship sports that don't bring in the money - the morally good ones make sure that the student-athletes are that, in that order (and the NCAA tries with their academic rules, but don't always make it - did you know that Brian Bosworth was an Academic All-American?).

I know most D-I athletes are not in the revenue sports. Heck outside of football and basketball i dont think any of the other college sports bring in much money. Lets be honest though not all the UNC or Duke basketball guys are/were geniuses. Lets be more honest if you took the 6'11 guy and made him 5'10 would he qualify to get into these schools?

IMO the basketball players are even dumber than the football players. Take a look at Arkansas under Nolan Richardson.

I also know the NCAA is trying some gig where if a certain percentage of players dont graduate in a set time period you lose some of your scholies.. They are trying but in the end their real care is about $$$

http://www.biconews.com/article/view/2433

just a little something...

From 1990-1995 Nolan Richardson had an abominable graduation rate for African-American scholarship players. That is, no scholarship black basketball player graduated during that span of time. Graduation rate statistics, however, especially for a Division I basketball team such as Arkansas, are highly overrated. Chances are basketball players at Arkansas did not come to the school to use logarithms or read Derek Walcott.

WOO HOO!!

Charleston firefighter Phil Pfister has become the first American in 24 years to win the World's Strongest Man competition.

Why in the world did you bother to check this?

Then again, I did watch the ESPN news channel obsessively for about 60 minutes tonight to find out if the Cardinals were finally going to lose. The STL game wasn't being shown on Houston area stations. So I had to watch.

Really, I had to.

Go Astros!

(Nip/Tuck crashed Firefox and my first attempt at a response...)

You might be surprised - and, even if they ain't that smart, the academic support is there.

I knew a guy that was an ass-kicking hockey player, but, dumb as a stump. Harvard told him, "Get 1000 on your SAT and you're in". He couldn't do it.

The difference between UNC, Duke, and Stanford, and, say, Rice, is that, at the first 3, it IS academics AND athletics (I can't use the Ivies because they don't give out athletic scholarships despite being I-A, which makes it even more of a head-scratcher - why would you PAY to play football at Harvard - or, if you were brainy enough to get an academic scholarship to Harvard or Columbia, WHY would you play football - would you love it THAT much?).

The failures just underscore the successes even more.

I'm in the middle of studying, but had to comment that you guys have managed to masculinize this thread as well as TPS and I and socute have feminized it. Good work on that one!

I wouldnt be surprised I know how much help is there. One of my buddies tutored the FSU football team..

One of my teammates was so good at Fball he had scholies to U Texas, UNC and a few other top notch D-1 places. All he needed was 700, I tutored the guy.. needless to say he is now a firefighter. FWIW he was the best fball player I ever played with insanely talented. Better than any of the 3 NFL pro bowlers I played with.

Building the pads..

I disagree on a number of levels.. one Rice has a great Baseball team.. thats just the way the ball bounces, much of it has to do with how much money they have to pay coaches and for their facilities. 2) I went to an Ivy and while I could have easily played ball there even after my ankle fracture I decided not to... People do play because they LOVE it. Lets be serious the football players at UNC are just hoping to make it to the big time.. they arent there for the schooling.. I cant speak too much to sports outside of football and basketball...

One last thing.. Hockey and Harvard are way different. The thing is you can be a pretty good hockey or baseball player and play in the minors (often with a fat ass contract). In basketball you better be one of the top 10 HS players in the country to go out after HS (which now is no longer allowed).

In other words you can be a dumb ass hockey player and still make some money.. no so for football because if you dont play college you are prob out of luck!
