Random question-how much money is everyone spending during interview season for travel, accomodations, etc, assuming you have 10-15 interviews spread somewhat throughout the country?

(I'm trying to base the interview numbers off the "typical" EM applicant)

On a random note, do you know that you can have a credit card even once you have passed away? I am working on organizing my grandparents' estate and every month they still get their Discover bill (with the automatic billing from AT&T on it, we still have the house).

This is a tough one because there is so much variation! 2 of the 5 interviews I have been on cost me nothing, both were in Chicago where I live. I also did one in Det which cost me about $50 in gas, they hooked it up with free hotel and dinner the night before. Then I did a multi leg flight thing.. $300 in airfare to 2 places, $100 in hotels (stayed with friends for part of it) and another $100 in car rentals.

I will break this up for +pad+ purposes.

Continued...

So for 5 interviews I spent $550, I think have 5 more to do.. But I will be staying at a friends house for a week and using his car so all I have to pay for is plane tix and a nice dinner to thank him! ~$400

My other trip will cost $200 for airfare and about 250 for hotel and car.

so for my 10 interviews im looking at $1400..

IMO this is cheap unless you know you want to go to NYC and can interview at 10 programs there or something. A large part of figuring this out is location of where you want to go vs where you are.

Hope this helps.

Imagine hotel costs for a week in a major city. Even if they are "real cheap" I would be looking at 350-400.

My cheapest hotel was $41 which included tax... Thanks Hotwire.. Of course staying with friends is FREE!!

If the ability to multitask is a pre-req for EM, then why are most of the EM docs I've seen male? 😛
