We're starting to lose ground. There's a thread in the pre-allo forum about Florida School interviews that has 3,000 real posts and 60,000 views (compare to this thread's 40,000 views). We need to kick it into high gear and find a way to make this thread more attractive. Maybe a discussion about getting wood during a physical exam would liven things up a bit.

So I start med school in August and am strongly considering EM... what do I do now to get into a good residency?

*This should provide fodder for several +pad+

There is a FAQ thread at the top of the EM forum that should get you started. You can also join the AAEM to get "Rules of the Road." It's a good book about what to do in medical school so that you'll be prepared for residency.

I couldn't agree more. In no particular order of importance:

How you treat people finds its way into your evaluations, either directly or indirectly. And your evaluations matter, though mostly from clinical years.

You want as many allies amongst your classmates as possible. This is true for preclinical and clinical years. A lot of people will go out of their way to look out for the best interests of their friends or people they respect/like, for example doing extra work so their friends can have an extra day off or have more time to study for an exam, shaing notes and other resources, or the like. They might not go above and beyond their professional/moral/ethical responsibilities for someone they don't like or respect.

Though often overworked and/or tired, residents do recognize when someone is an a-hole, and they may assign scut work accordingly, or distribute procedures/surgeries accordingly. After witnessing co-students' frustration at getting their just desserts, I'm pretty sure it sucks to get shut out of rare/cool operations on an otherwise hellish surgery clerkship. But I can't say from personal experience. 😀
