I'm all about getting frequent flier miles. If I pay with my own credit card I get double miles for plane ticket purchases.
If it's not a possiblity to pay with my own card, would it be possible to refund the ticket that is purchased on the government card and then use my own personal card to purchase the ticket. Obviously there would be a positive balance on the government card.
Anyway, I'm just trying to think outside the box which I know is a no-no in the military, but it doesn't hurt to try. Thanks.

Usually they require that all travel be booked through DTS (Defense Travel System) and that the service member use a gov't travel card.

DoD has been very harsh on purchasing your own airline tickets because of a lot of fraud within the civil service. You can get stuck with a bill and not refunded, or only partially refunded to the gov't contract rate.

If you are directed to use DTS, and you do not; DFAS can refuse payment.

Another thing is the government has contracts with specific air carriers. If you buy a ticket on another carrier that doesn't fall within the agreement they won't reimburse you.

I once bought an airline ticket on my personal credit card. It literally took over a year to get reimbursed, and was a major pain in the buttocks. I have used my personal credit card many times to pay for hotels, although this is also frowned upon (but much easier to "fix" when doing your voucher in DTS). I don't see how it can be done with airline tickets. At least you still get your frequent flier miles for flying, even if you can't get double miles for purchasing on your own card.

Don't try in this instance. The pain will be too severe. You need prior authorization to do it and they usually don't give it.
