Have you noticed and heat problems, or whining problems? How is that new keyboard???

I had it on my lap for about 2 hours last night, and it didn't get as hot as my HP Pavilion did on my lap. There was no whining, and it is quieter than my HP (which isn't saying a lot). i <3 the keyboard, although they keys are a bit lower , so it took about 5 minutes of getting used to. The keys feel nice to press. Because I'm used to my HP, I had a tiny bit of difficulty using the apple keys to switch between tabs, but I'm sure I"ll get used to that soon. 🙂

Same here, but with a dual boot into XP. What flavor are you running? I have Ubuntu and love it. Definitely the easiest to use and set-up of all the ones I have tried.

I tried out many linux distro's and as far as usability its fine, but the hardware compatability isnt that great in my opinion. Alot of my graphics hardware wasnt supported. (I used diamond and nVidia) But that was when redhat 5 and 6 were out. Its been a while since I took a plunge...

Single-boot Mac for now, but I know that I'll be adventurous someday and put Windows on it. I've just been using Windows for so long (since 1998) that it's nice to go back to Mac OS for a bit. I plan on buying either a MB or the MBP... It matters what happens in late august/sept. I am for sure going to be doing a dual boot of windows and mac OS. Its the best of both worlds. Im currently using a dell dimension xps d Pentium II 333mhz PC with 128 megs of ram. (this is at home anyways). At my lab I use a Pentium III 1.2Ghz PC. Both with windows (windows 2000 on the latter).

I know that for the Macbook you need to install memory in dual chips. So if you want to go with a 1GB Ram setup you need to go with a 2 x 512mb setup. Why not just shell out about $75 more and get a 2GB upgrade. Try going to newegg.com, the ram install is easy. I do it for my friends, and from the looks of what I have been reading about it seems like this machine is really easy to upgrade unlike the powerbook.

Win XP should run fine on it (it has direct X 9.0) but windows vista is going to have direct X 10.0 so I hear that the video wont be as compatible (unless apple gets a fix).

I guess for me right now, I am holding out until the Core 2 Duo comes out. Then we will be able to do 64 bit capabilties and that is the wave of the future. Not to mention it will continue to utilize ULV (I believe the current core duo uses this tech) which will reduce power consumption... I just want them to start develping these chips faster! 🙂

Basically you need 2x1Gig of any brand DDR2 PC2-5300 ram. I would personally buy 1 stick of 1 gig to start off with plus your current 512 mb. You end up with 1.5 gb of ram which I think is sufficient and you can always buy another 1 gig to replace that 512 mb if you really need it. As for warranty, I don't think it would void it. As for difficulty, find a nerd friend and thank him with some ice cream.

EDIT: actually looks like the 512 in your macbook is 2x256. Well you can still add 1 gig and end up with 1.25 gb. Good enough!

You know as of right now, I dont know what I am going to do about the PDA req and the whole compatability issue with macs. Im leaning towards getting a palm TX or a dell axim, but I need to do more homework on it. The dual booting is why the macbook (pro or non pro) seems like a good fit. Best of both worlds. Have you decided on a PDA device? I dont know if these PDAs will be supported in the Mac OS or not. I just dont know enough about PDA's. Gotta do some homework!

Hells yeah. I'm a geek and I'm proud. Mac fanboy, too, just to get that out of the way (ever since the Lisa). You seem to know a whole lot more about the Intel chipsets and their release dates than I do, though. Any bets on likelihood of an ultralight mac release coming tomorrow, or do you think Jobs blew his wad with the MBs yesterday? It wouldn't surprise me if he got his "just one more thing..." on tomorrow.

You find out where you're going to be next year yet? I think that could make a difference as far as PDA choice goes--if there's EVDO coverage where I am, I might just pay for unlimited data and network through my phone, rather than paying for wired broadband.

While I won't discourage you from upgrading your memory, you don't need it to dual-boot. Dual boot gets you one or the other OS, not both at the same time, and WinXP isn't any worse of a memory hog than OS X. If one works, the other should work fine too.

for geekdom. Im relatively new to doing my homework on the apple stuff, but from what my apple enthusiast friends have told me, there is usually a lot of fan fare for a new product. I am hoping for a Macbook that has dedicated graphics, but I shouldnt get my hopes up. The form factor is nice 13.3". I would pay probably up to $200 more for a dedicated GPU with dedicated VRAM. The video ram is what will speed things up for the graphics since the bottle neck resides there. Maybe they thought the core duo would be happy enough with the ample L2 cache supplied, and thus allowing the integrated video processor to acess the ram? I dont know... I do hope however there is an ultra portable or another MB coming out, but I highly doubt it.

The MB already seems like a good work horse for me, I just wanted it to be good enough to be able to play warcraft, or quake...Well if it means anything if conroe/merom chips get released soon I hope they put them into the MB at the same time as the MBP. If they dont, I wouldnt mind waiting to get my MB after anatomy block this fall. After all I will just be focusing on my cadaver anyways... How about you?

Viruses are not wide spread on the Mac OS/platform since the total market share is ~10% (someone correct me if I am way off base), and a virus writer would want to get the "most bang for buck" factor and write it for the windows platform (market share of about ~80%). Therefore it is more worth the time to write a virus which will infect many people.

This is kinda like viruses our in nature (real nature ones). Viruses like to spread alot (dare I say... "increase progeny") and will infect anything, and as you know they have to bind to surface recognition markers (aka carbohydrate clusters on the cell membrane, or in PC terms OS) to infect....

I think this makes sense, no? 🙄

Hmm. Just went back and re-read some of the stories.

It was a true virus...the only time you got the password prompt was if you weren't logged in as an administrative account. If you were logged in as an admin, the program could run automatically.

If I am not mistaken, OSX is written on a Unix core. So yes, more stable and less prone to viruses than Windows. However, there are plenty of commercial servers that run Unix, and there were viruses written for those. Bottom line, you can write a virus for any platform if you try hard enough, but why try hard to infect a Mac when its so easy to get a PC and target 90% of the audience.

As an analogy, how many times have people developed "unbreakable" software protection schemes? Each time they get cracked. Someone just has to sit and figure out how to do it.

No, that isn't the difference. Trojans are not designed to spread, they are just there to get into your computer and muck with it in some way or another, such as sending credit card information back to the writer. Spyware is basically an example of a trojan, but without such nefarious ends. A virus is designed to spread from computer to computer. Many of the windows viruses required that you open an email (a lesser intervention, but still an intervention).

I LOVE PC foreva. Sometime I hae to use MAC in the lab because there is no other computer and i find myself hopeless to try to fix something if it does not work, it is completely different. I think PC is far more compatible with most of the programs available on the internet and I never had problems with viruses cause I use Norton Internet security.
In addition with the new Intel chip MACs will be the same as PC anyways in a MAC wrap. In addition, one button-mouse just drives me insane.

I like how MAC laptops look though but i cant handle OS. But I think a PC laptops are cheaper.

while i would certainly never claim that this single fact would convert a pc person over to mac, macs do not ship with a one-button mouse anymore. they ship with a mouse capable of right clicking (and other functions) and are also compatible with all third-party multi-button USB mice.

The video card for the MB should be fine for whatever you do usually (word processing, email, fire foxing, and photoshop). I just wouldnt expect to run Warcraft on it at the highest setting. This PC wasnt meant for the serious gamer. I know we like to have all our bells and whistles, but we have to compromise at some point considering the MB is every bit as powerful as the MBP besides some small bells and whistles.

I am just waiting for some speed bumps and possible merom additions to the intel based laptop lineup before I take the plunge into the apple laptop world.

The mouse...I am just going to use my Microsoft USB intellimouse (optical). I've had it for over 5 years now, and I still love the damn thing. Its never failed me! 🙂

Agree, and that's where I don't get all the complaints. This is the apple consumer line laptop. It's ridiculous to expect it to have the same graphical capabilities as a pro line desktop. If you're a hardcore gamer, this laptop shouldn't even be in your thinking.

yep, i use one with my powerbook. the scroll ball is actually much better than the normal scroll wheel on most pc mice too. and the smaller shape is more comfortable than the larger stuff microsoft and kensington seem to offer.

Its not that big of a deal for me now. I am just gonna use my MS optical intellimouse. MS has made some nice mice. They also have laptop versions, which are small and also incorporate the tilt wheel action. (I am not paid by MSFT) 😀

I just got my greedy hands on a beta copy of Windows Vista and wanted to weigh in again. It's amazing how much they've made Vista like Mac OS!! It now has a sidebar of internet connected "gadgets" which is almost a straight copy of the Mac OS Dashboard with "widgets." In addition the default icon scheme now uses much more "friendly-looking" button style icons rather than the traditional windows look. They've upgraded Internet Explorer to be EXACTLY like Mozilla (Firefox), complete with tabbed browsing. The windows are rounded and the edges are translucent like "foggy glass." Overall the look is very chic, but I am a little concerned about the possible resources necessary to render these extra visual effects. I've had no hardware issues thus far although AOL immediately crashes (but hey, it's beta). This OS really could give Mac OS a run for its money in terms of style, something windows has always lacked. Their solution with XP was to make scroll bars slide and make menu and title bars colored with a "bubbled" 3D look. It's still NT based rather than UNIX or Linux based, but from what I've read it plays much more nicely with UNIX now. I've yet to try a major 3D game like Battlefield 2, but it's on my list. Oh, and one final feature is that when things are minimized to the taskbar you can now roll the mouse over it and you get a small preview of what it looks like. Not that useful if you ask me, it's a gimmick, but still reminds me of Mac OS. If Apple is going to make a bid in the PC operating system market, now is the time while Microsoft can't get its act together to release Vista (because I know Steve Jobs always makes a point to read my posts >).

It works like a champ on my pc, albeit a bit slower than win me, but ill take it any day of the week. These widgets have been implemented in the gnome/kde desktop environments before mac OS did. Actually the integrated on board video isnt too bad for your $. The dedicated GPU isnt the best on the MBP. I wouldnt play any games on the mac at all to tell you the truth. If you want to run these serious games at the "highest" settings you'd probably want to go with a non mac, at least since the the grpahics that apple uses is middle end (the ATI ), where as you could go with the nVidia. I think for me I will take my moms Dell Insprion 9300 with nVidia Geforce Go 6800 Ultra (256mb vram) and use that to play games. (if i have the time )

The MB/MBP will be for work horse duties... 🙄

True about the Linux implementation of widgets, but since Mac OS is based upon UNIX, I don't think that's a big stretch. I think Microsoft looks a little impotent to be so late with them. Plus people have been blasting IE for years, and only now do they start using Firefox-like features. As for speed with Windows XP, you can very easily make windows XP just as fast as windows 2000 or any feature-scaled-down version. Check out Control Panels->System->Advanced->Performance settings and get rid of just about everything...most of those are so small you wouldn't notice them anyway! Especially the animations. I keep "smooth edges of fonts," "use background image for each folder type," "use common tasks in folders," and "use visual styles." That way Windows XP LOOKS good still, but there's no performance drop for grandma-friendly sliding menus and things. If you remove everything it takes it down to Windows 2000 or a version of windows server....no wonder why Windows server uses NO visual effects (needless performance hit!). Want to know something funny!? Even though Vista looks COMPLETELY different from all other versions windows, the performance options are virtually the EXACT same, and if you remove all of them it still looks just like windows 2000!! >). And here people thought they were getting a whole new OS..... In answer to your question I would say out-of-the-box Vista runs slower than my optimized XP, however, not by much and I'd definitely say the performance hit is worth it...as I said, it's very chic. I'm running Athlon 64 3200+, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 9600. As soon as I get back from Paris I'm planning on upgrading to a PCI express mobo (with sli x16 just in case I want to go for 2 video cards) plus Nvidia 7600GT...I think that's the best price/performance ratio right now and would take my 3DMark 2006 from ~700 to 2000-3000. Should only be about a $300 upgrade.

I pretty much agree on the gaming side. If you want top of the line gaming 1) stick with PC because you can max it out for much less $$$ and 2) stick with a desktop vs. a laptop (cheaper components, more flexibility, more upgradability, and quite frankly, more durable parts). However, top of the line ATI cards are just as good as top of the line Nvidia cards, so I would have to disagree with that assumption. It is true, however, that the ATI cards Apple has picked are mid-range cards- plus Apple has never really marketed any of their computers at gamers. Thus I'd still consider buying a Mac laptop for everyday stuff, or using Mac OS on a great PC, but I would definitely not give up my PC entirely.

Any Photoshop optimizations that the G4 chip had over Intel/AMD chips are no longer applicable after the "switch". That said yes the MBP will def be faster than the MB. Blame intergrated graphics.

Would you expect the MacBookPro to be better at photoshop than the MacBook?

They will both be sllllooooowwwwwww for photoshop. It hasn't been re-written for the intel macs, so it has to use an emulator. At the moment, I'm probably not even going to load photoshop on my intel-mac laptop (when I buy it), b/c it will run faster on my current G5 iMac.

Vista as of right now wont be supported on the Mac intel based... because the current graphics setup cannot be supported by directX10. XP uses directX9. As far as win xp... It works like a champ on my pc, albeit a bit slower than win me, but ill take it any day of the week. These widgets have been implemented in the gnome/kde desktop environments before mac OS did. Kypdurron, what machine are you running it on? What are the specs? Does it run a bit slower or faster?

Hmm... I just read that the intel macs will meet the newly released requirements for running Vista.

The hardware specifications outlined by Microsoft are consistent with Apple’s Intel-based Macs, however. Both ATI and Intel, who manufacture the graphics systems used in the new Intel-based Macs, indicate that their graphics hardware is Windows Vista-compatible. A Mac with upgraded RAM also falls in line with Microsoft’s specifications for a Windows Vista Premium Ready PC.

Nice! This is good news! Albeit even though I am a true PC fan, and I have been here with windows since windows 3.1 and msdos version 5, I know better than to go out and purchase windows vista the day of the release. I will probably wait next year to purchase a copy. Why would you want to pay to be a beta tester....

What I really want to do is build a desktop PC, using antec power supply and housing. I built one for my neighbor (he paid for all the stuff and I put it together, this was ages ago), and the antec power supply is incredible. No fan noises what so ever. I'd also like to try out a radiator (water cooling) system for a pc to reduce the sound generated from my PC, that way I dont have to use fans which make my desktop sound like its getting ready for take off from the air port.
