PCOM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To the people who recentrly received interview emails, could you tell me when you guys were complete? I have been complete for some time now and I'm kind of nervous as the time is running out..should I still be hopeful? Someone mentioned that PCOM intereviews go till end of march, so now i'm kind of freaking out...thanks for your input in advance..

Hey premed, I was complete in October but my DO didn't write a letter for me until 1/29.

So for those you have seen/followed/interviewed/accepted at TCMC (thread), the new allopathic school in Pennsylvania (Scranton, WBarre, Williamsport area)...what program would you prefer? why?

I know that I have my own personal bias 🙂...others?

I interviewed there, have yet to hear back. I wrestled with this question for quite some time.

I would take PCOM over this school for a couple of reasons. (1) Money, (2) better med school experience, and (3) residencies

First money:

But wait, 'TCMC is super cheap!' I hear you say. The cheap price for the inaugural class is tempting, but it's a scenario that your middle school math teacher would give you go show the importance of loan percentages. As they will tell you on interview day, the money you take out to pay for school has to be 100% private loans. They have no yet qualified for federal loans. This means a couple of things:

(1) Say goodbye to federal loans/federal sponsored loans like Stafford, PErkins, Grad Plus that charge between 7-9% interest. Because you can't get federal loans at TCMC yet, I got a quote of 13% for loans. That's really high. That said, the rate you will pay is entirely dependent on your credit rating/hisotry. You can bet though that if you don't have a house or some collateral, you'll pay a couple percentage points higher than the federal loans. Which bring me to point 2..

(2) Whether or not you get loans to pay for med school will depend entirely on your credit rating. This scares me. I have never defaulted on a loan, live pretty simply, but I have undergrad/grad loans so that impacts the private loans I get. At PCOM, the federal gov't could never stop my Stafford loans from coming in unless I stopped paying child support (I don't have kids, just trying to give an example) or I reached the upper limit of total Stafford loans allowed. At TCMC, the bank could stop giving me payments if they felt like it OR, more realistically, they could jack up percentage rates half way through. There are no guarantees.

Pasted below after the -------- is my orginal (messy) working out for the loans I was offered at TCMC. If you follow my working out it's not a good deal

Med school experience

PCOM has had over 100 years to build a reputation and iron out the cirriculmn. They have clinics all over Philly to get solid experience at. The rotations are good, and they're not going anywhere. TCMC on the other hand has said is working on building partnerships for rotations, but just like everything else it's a work in progress. Again, it's a gamble.

Residencies

In a nut shell, PCOM has its own residencies, and you can see from match results that a lot of people from PCOM go to there for residency. Like most schools, they will probably give preference to their own students, so that's a nice fall back. TCMC won't have their own residency spots for years so again, so fewer options for you

What do other people think?

Good luck in whatever you decide

------------

27,000 private loan every year *4=108,000 for med school education at TCMC. This is good...

But really it's

First year=27,000* (1.13 (13 percent interest rate)^4 (because it immediately begins to build up interest in school because it's private loan)= 44,022

second year=27,000* (1.13 (13 percent interest rate)^3 (because it immediately begins to build up interest in school)=38,958

third year=27,000* (1.13 (13 percent interest rate)^2 (because it immediately begins to build up interest in school)=34,476

fourth year=27,000* (1.13 (13 percent interest rate)^1 (because it immediately begins to build up interest in school)=30,510

so 147,966 for every thing. Average med school debt is 139,517 so it's not great. With PCOM loan/scholarship in Philly, est cost is 148,373

I wonder if the ocmmonwealth school will ever have residencies of their own because its not like PA isnt heavily into medical education already. there are very few hopsitals in PA that do not have medicals tudents and residencies. The ones that dont have reason not too.

Oh yeah I got my binder today in the mail and I logged onto Nucleus and checked my email for the first time! Very exciting!

It's kind of a disorganized interface, but I feel like it's offical now....can't wait to give out my pcom.edu address to my family!

I heard the state pulled a decent amount of $ out of them because of the current state of the economic... I don't know, but surely does not sound assuring to me. I interviewed there but was rejected hahaha  They thought I was desperate but oh well I was simply a little bit too enthu haha

oh well, after which I received 4 interview offers at MDs schools (3 coming up and 1 pending) and accepted at 4 DO programs, after which I withdrew from all other DO interviews except for PCOM 😍 (I shadowed 4 PCOM doctors and they impressed me from head to toe!) my interview with PCOM is coming up in 2 weeks on the 5th. Anyone with me? haha

hey guys that just got new of interviews.....what's ur stats like? I completed my application wayy back in October 2008, and haven't heard anything back yet. My MCAT score is a little below a 30, so I'm just wondering if that's the reason......maybe they aren't interviewing people in my range just yet?? Thanks for your help!

My MCAT was lower than your's, above a 20 though (let's say between 20 and 25), GPA was 3.27, science GPA even lower than that. I had a LOR from a DO and submitted my app over winter break. They just emailed me on 2/10 about my interview on 3/11.

I would def advise you to call their admissions office and see what's going on. Did they even email you to say that they received your app?

My MCAT is 30P, GPA 3.45c/3.47s originally, sent updated grades from last semester that made it 3.53c/3.54s. Complete in Oct because they didnt recieve my mcats for an extra month. Still haven't heard anything either so you're not alone.

Calling their admissions office doesn't help, they won't tell you anything other than your app is complete/pending. :bang:

Well my interview was today...............it's laid back but i still was nervous......they said 80% of the class is full!!!!!!!! uuuugggggg

If you applied that early, you should have gotten an interview by now...I'm sorry man, that sucks. If it means anything, I was complete in July, maybe early Augusy, and didn't get an interview until December. Also, I've interviewed a lot over the years and the only admissions office more disorganized than PCOM is Drexel...I would say that it's a Philly thing except that Jefferson is pretty on top of things. It's a shame because PCOM itself is so great

I've got my fingers crossed for you guys!

did they tell you when you would find out if you are accepted? Also, how do you find out? small letter home? large letter? email?

thanks!

Jefferson is not organized, sorry.

well they said whether it is good or bad you will get a small letter..........it could take anywhere from 1.5 wks to a month..............WTF
I can't wait that long, i need to know NOW.......LOL

Oh and from what i hear......................Jefferson has some of the rudist people working in admissions......i heard that they are really ignorant

Ok so I'm feeling lucky today folks...
hoping that I find my binder and my binder finds me when I get home from work today. It's not PCOM's problem, I hadn't updated my address through the proper channels and it was sent to my old one, but up to today it hasn't arrived anywhere and it's been over a week since it was mailed out.

:bang:My preciousssssssss.... binder....

they said class is at 80% capacity? i'm really hoping for an interview. My secondary went in on 9/28. I just got n interview offer from W.Virginia so i'm hoping some schools just take their time?

I had that question too. How long is the 'Health Experience' essay supposed to be??

How long is the 'health experience' essay supposed to be??

Yessir. They sure are. However the Philadelphia app is kind of weird:

Please attach a brief statement indicating why you wish to attend Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and why you want to become an osteopathic physician.

What health care related experiences have you had?

Are these two separate "pages"? Answer both in the same essay? What do we do????????

How long is the 'health experience' essay supposed to be??

I think it depends on your app, but I, CB, and I think Bacchus listed. Nothing special, similar to how it was done for the primary. I did that for a September primary and got interview (pending outcome!!! :xf:)

So probably a crazy question to ask, but I don't know where else to ask it.

For those that have been accepted and received their binders...is it possible to access our e-mail with a desktop client like Thunderbird, Outlook, Apple Mail, etc.? Thanks 🙂

At the very least you can have your mail forwarded to gmail, though I have been having trouble setting that up. As for whether there's a pop or something, I don't know yet, but curious to find out, too!

Good question! It's Groupswise email which makes it a pain in the arse!

Groupwise uses a modified POP3 setting, and the first thing I did when I got the binder is to email tech support for the POP3 server. I tried mail1.pcom.edu which is what I found the server to be when I checked the header of an email addressed to my gmail account. It didn't work though. If anyone gets the outbound/inbound POP3 server for PCOM, please post!!!

there isnt one but they are trying to work on it. The IT department and email at pcom are not a good combination

I've tried every server on the PCOM header, including gwise-2.pcom.edu, mail1.ad.pcom.edu, mail1.pcom.edu. Of course then one has to get the port correctly...I did some port scanning, and the only port closed is 220 on mail1.pcom.edu. The rest are open, and with/without SSL it doesn't seem to matter...I am inclined then to believe you JonnyG...I hate Groupwise! Just get an SSL IMAP server for goodness sake.

It looks like you can create a forwarding rule to have everything sent to another email...but then it would appear to be from you, not from the sender. That's annoying

I'll work on it some more, it's probably a lost cause, but I like a good challenge 🙂

I've tried some similar stuff as you, and no matter what I can't seem to get it to work either. What's the tech support e-mail address though, I can't seem to find it on the pcom website. I'll keep trying this weekend when I have a little free time, but I think we might be fighting a losing battle 😡 Stupid Novell GroupWise.

At the very least you can have your mail forwarded to gmail, though I have been having trouble setting that up. As for whether there's a pop or something, I don't know yet, but curious to find out, too!

Forwarding works pretty well and is easy to set up. Just click on e-mail within nucleus, then options, then rules. Forward to mail as the type, then click create. All you have to do is put your e-mail address in the "to:" section. It works decently enough, though you can't see who the original sender is (as iloveDrStill mentioned).

You can call the main line and ask for the help desk, but good luck trying to get a tech support person on the phone! I have tried. The email address for support is [email protected] but like I said, they haven't answered me yet. It's frustrating because the default for Groupwise is to have IMAP and POP access, but the server names are not standardized at all so they just need to tell us what they are. Blah

The Nucleus site is so confusing. I had an email that said I had a bill ready, so I followed the 10-step instructions and found a copy of my deposit. But without the step-by-step instructions it would've been impossible to figure out.

I agree TruthSerum, it is probably a lost battle, but I really hate that interface, don't you?

Still hoping for an interview. Anyone who interviewed recently get an idea for how much longer they'll be inviting? I really want to at least get a decent shot, I visited PCOM and liked it so much. 🙁

That 80% full statistic is pretty daunting, but I'm happy it's not higher, and there will probably be some withdrawals as other acceptances come in.

Pleeeeeeaaase PCOM. Also - invites by snail mail?

I emailed the helpdesk a few weeks ago about this and got a phone call back. Basically they told me (as JohnnyG) said they are working on it. He told me they believe PCOM students will be able to sync their email with Outlook and with PDA Phones starting in the Fall 09 term. The email I used was: [email protected].

I"m in the same boat as you. I cannot figure out what they want or whats going on with my app.

I've got a 31T. Had weak undergrad science gpa (about 2.8sci 3.2 total 3.8 non sci) but I did a TON of other stuff, athletics, research, volunteering, medical/clinical experience.

I even attended a post-bac where I got all A/B grades first semester.

They got my secondary at the start of January (I had to wait to get my official transcripts in from the fall post-bac semester).

I was waitlisted for their post bac last year and accepted somewhere else. They later accepted me but i'd already signed a lease and it was too late. I really don't wanna accept at another school if PCOM is going to interview me and god willing accept me. I want to go to PCOM soooo bad. Its got more clinical rotations in what I want to go into, more of their graduates fall into those specialties and its so much closer to my family whom I miss dearly.

Its just frustrating that I haven't heard from them. They basically told me not to call the office and check up and basically just wait. Its killing me.

Are there others like me who are in this boat? Just waiting silently?

I love PCOM, but that is one thing I wish was different. Nucleus, Novell, and those jalopy monitors and screwy desks in Ginsburg. Otherwise 😍 Who knows, maybe we could get a server up and running ourselves? Get some re-writes going on =)

Glad to hear that someone else is familiar with port scanning

I just heard that a friend of mine got an interview invite for 3/13 - I'm not sure when they got the invite...seemed very recent. They were complete in September if I remember correctly.

Someone else said there were 54 seats left when they asked at their interview on 2/17.

:luck:

Are there certain days of the week they send out invites?

Could it just come to my email box at anytime? I have been kind of OCD in checking it...

Mine came on a Thursday as well. Around 3:30pm. I actually just arrived at the hotel for my DMU interview.

Thanks for the replies.

Haha, well, it didn't come today and today was Thursday. I'll be popping my gmail open repeatedly tomorrow all day.

I guess all I can do is wait and pray really. Thanks for the support though. I'll keep you posted.

My PCOM interview invite came to my gmail on Monday, 2/9 at 2:09, whoa, there's way to many 2's and 9's in that (2/9/2009 at 2:09). freeeaakkyyy.

I just flew into Philly to shadow an PCOM OMSII after my NSU interview (which I loved and knew I did well...you just get that "feeling" =). We just finished the day of classes when my gmail filter caught and forwarded "interview" to my cellphone. I also heard that I letter from lecom-brad (1st acceptance) that morning....it was a good day :soexcited:

:xf: for upcoming replys....

I used gmail...I also had to use google lab's "Take a break" feature to get my studying done ...it was absolutely ridiculous. About every 4 minutes - I kid you not...

I relied heavily on gmail's filters and labeled anything that came in:

Matches: ("college of medicine" OR "school of medicine" OR university OR medicine) -{"Student Doctor Network" OR "Facebook"}
Do this: Apply label "MedicalSchool", Never send it to Spam

Matches: "interview" -{secondary supplemental OR "Student Doctor Network" OR "Facebook"}
Do this: Star it, Apply label "A-zInterview", Never send it to Spam, Forward to #######@vtext.com

Nothing here either. Don't you almost hate the weekends because you know you won't be recieving any word from schools? Checking your e-mail compulsively on the weekends will accomplish nothing.

Even fridays it seems like they don't bother sending anything out.

Very clever, I do the same thing! The only problem is: I've had a few email rejections, including from CU and SUNY, and they give me false hope when they're forwarded, and since you only get the first, what, 150 character, you can't tell it's a rejection. But it's a handy tool for those of us who can't afford internet access on our phones

So how did you receive ur acceptances? was it by mail or email? Some say they got email and other say snail mail, which is it?

Thanks
