PCOM-Ga Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Accepted as well and I live in GA. I'm debating between this school and LECOM..anyone else on the same boat?

I was just in the same boat, accepted to Lecom-Bradenton and Pcom-GA, and in my opinion I liked PCOM a whole lot better. One of the biggest factors for me was gross lab dissections at PCOM that would not be available at LECOM. Both are good schools and you will get a great medical education at either one, so it's just up to you. Good luck deciding!

That is the only downside? Wherever you end up, you will spend most of your time sitting in a room staring at a computer screen/stack of books/white board for the majority of your time outside of class and most schools are in one building anyway. Are you really going to base your school choice on what you walk by when going from your car to the bldg?

Make the decision based on curriculum, rotation sites, proximity to family, what else the area has to offer for you in your very minimal downtime, etc. These things will impact your time in school, not whether you had a quad to hang out at between classes or if the big brick building you spend all your time in is surrounded by other brick buildings full of students. Its the last thing on your mind when you have a impossibly large stack of biochem, genetics and immunology in front of you at 1AM and the last thing you will care about when you are enjoying a weekend off with friends/family before it all starts again on monday.

I can indeed, I had a 9 month old when I started. A classmates son was 5 mos. Its tough but were both doing fine.

Thought I would chime in. I have stayed away from the SDN for a while, but wanted to give my input on Ga-PCOM. I started with the class of 2014 and had to take a LOA due to personal reasons. First, let me say that the school really does foster a "family" type atmosphere. I had to take my LOA half way through our first trimester...not a great deal of time. Nevertheless, a few people have contacted me to see how I was doing and asked if they could help. This really means a lot...fellow classmates who actually care enough to make sure I come back with the class of 2015.

Second, teacherman is correct in that there will always be people you get along with and those you don't. You will find (esp. if you are a group person) that these people will be your lifeline for the next 2 years...not sure about rotations, but at least for the classroom learning. Other people, such as myself, learn better on my own and that is fine too. Just know you have options and can experiment on what works best for you. PCOM does not require attendance, which is great for those who are self learners. Further, those of us with kids (I have a soon to be 3 yr old) may use this time to study. This leaves a little more time at the end of the day for family. Just be advised this doesn't always works...esp on test weeks. However, it's an option that can provide for more family/study time.

Third, those of us with kids did fine. Actually, some did wayy better than those that are single or married w/o kids. Not that this really matters, but it proves my point that you CAN do well in med school with family/kids. Getting support from those who understand our situation from others in the class having to face the same is helpful. You will have different priorities than others in the class, but that shouldn't deter you or make you feel guilty (or as an outcast) in any way.

Fourth, classes were fine. The majority of the professors are great and willing to help at all cost. I did find the main class (SPOM) somewhat disorganized, esp. embryology. Hopefully, this is one aspect they can improve on next year.

Finally, I would recommend Ga-PCOM to any of you trying to decide b/n different schools. The match lists the past few yrs have been impressive, good facilities, caring faculty/staff, etc... Remember, how you do on your boards/school will depend on what you put into it. GL

Thanks for the help! @ teacherman @ vcu @ rachel

How much is the tuition? I saw 13000++, but then at the bottom it says 40000+? Thanks

anyone else get the PCOM-ga christmas card?

YAYAYAY Accepted!!

I have been lurking for awhile, Interviewed on Nov 2. I loved the school, very family oriented atmosphere and the interview was laid back compared to other schools.

My only concern is the location. I grew up and always lived in the central part of a city, always had a hard time in small towns. Any thoughts from current students on what it's like living in Suwanee?

Stats:
28Q
GPA 3.3
Sci-GPA 3.3

I'd be happy to answer any questions on what my interview experience was.

Congrats on your acceptance. I don't live in Suwanee, but my aunt does and I visit her frequently. I wouldn't call it a small town, there are a ton of stores and everything you need around it. It's rapidly growing and you're not too far from Atlanta. It's not in the city, so yeah that would be an adjustment for you, but it's not a small town. Trust me, I've lived in one. Maybe it just seemed that way on your interview date because the school isn't around a busy road and a little secluded. I wouldn't worry about getting bored or having nothing to do in that area. Atlanta itself is an amazing city and you're not too far from it.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

Heck, live in ATL and commute. You'll be going opposite of traffic during rush hours. Without traffic it's a 20 minute drive.
Also, suwanee isn't very small town. It has a Starbucks. Lol

Anyone in town tonight before the interview tomorrow??

Thanks, I had kind of a hellish travel experience getting to the school. I am from out of state and didn't have a car while I was there so I didn't get to see any of the surrounding area.

Just for kicks if anyone wants to hear a funny travel story...

This is how getting to my first interview at Ga-Pcom went- I missed my flight bc the tire on my car blew, the only option to get to the interview the next morning was to buy a 1 way $500 ticket.😱 At the car rental location in Atlanta the clerk entered my zip code from my license incorrectly and my credit card subsequently froze (only credit card.) I then spent the next 2.5 hours trying to contact my bank, tech support in India, and haggling with rental company😡. Around 2:30 AM they offered me a free ride to my hotel, which I took. When I got there the hotel, which i had reserved a room at, couldn't charge my card and wouldn't wait till the morning for me to pay, nor would any of the other nearby hotels, nor would they let me wait in their lobby. I walked to a waffle house with all my luggage and sat there from 3:30 AM till 8:00 when i called my bank and got the card unfrozen. I walked back hotel and ironed my suit the best i could, no shower or sleep:scared::scared:. I then called a cab and went the interview, peeing like a race horse from the caffeine, shaking like crazy from the stress and lack of sleep. I must have seemed like a crazy person to the student tour guides, haha. Worth it in the end.

This is just the sparknotes version, and doesn't include such gems as- the homeless people who invited me to do meth with them, the toothless people at waffle house, or the bizarre conversations I had on the 40 mile ride from ATL to suwanee... good times.

It wouldn't be a southern visit without a waffle house.

lol....one of my friends told me that my GI system would never forgive me if I ate at waffle house

But...if it's as good as you all say it is...I might be willing to give it a try!

you guys are nuts. you go to waffle house and you get hashbrowns. grits... grow up.

The Waffle House exists outside of the normal understanding of medical knowledge. It is the only place where you can watch your cook handle raw bacon/sausage/eggs, then take your toast from the toaster and butter it, and know you can't get sick.

I don't know, maybe it is like street food in India. Maybe, as a southerner, I am immune.

WH, you will come to see, is the great unifying force of humanity down here.** The parking lot will have a 1975 Gremlin parked next to a 2010 E Class, next to a Civic, next to an F-250. The businessman will sit at the counter next to the crack-addict. Everyone is polite, everyone talks to the waiters. The brief time spent through those doors is a true glimpse at peace. That place is my church.

**note: all bets are off after 2:00 a.m.

such a true response. Now that I think about it, it is the only place I have ever been where ALL walks of life join together and get a long fine. It really is kind of weird!

Any current students willing to chime in on this who are making that commute? I was curious what it would look like on a daily basis. I'm still deciding on schools, but GA-PCOM gets bonus points b/c I have a (grossly devalued) condo in midtown ATL, and would rather not deal with it for a few more years.🙂

Was also curious if anyone had info on what percentage of students get 3rd/4th year rotations in ATL? Thanks!

Alright....now I'm intrigued

So, I've got a question.

I didn't get accepted after my interview on 11/1 (sadly), but I don't know if I got rejected either. The letter said that they would be holding my application and "periodically reviewing it" for admission.

Does that mean that I've been waitlisted? Have they even established a waitlist yet? And what are my chances, going on from here?

I would take a bath in waffle house grits. They are the best thing on the planet!

👍👍

Uhmm, hashbrowns are awesome...but not as much as the grits.

Did anyone else have issues typing responses into the PCOM secondary form? Mine keep disappearing as soon as I move the cursor.

Soo yeaahh....I have a question....How long did PCOM take to get back to you after you sent them your seat deposit? And how did they notify you

Thanks bunchies! 🙂

I've just been checking my bank account to see if they've cashed my check.😀

Hey all,

I just heard today that I've been offered an interview on January 25th. I'm thrilled but the thing is I'll be out of the country from Jan 15th-May20th. I called admissions and left a voicemail asking to have my interview moved up to the 13th or earlier. I wonder if anyone had been in a similar position and could share how the school responded to their needs.

I received an interview invite for January 24th today. Anyone else get an invite for that day?

Living in town is totally doable. I live right off Piedmont park and it's a very consistent 30 min. drive every morning, and on most evenings. On Thurs and Fri PM, if you leave school after 4 you may have to add 5-10 minutes going home due to weekend traffic.

There are a couple of minor downsides: 1) During term 1 when we had anatomy lab, if I wanted to work in the lab outside of scheduled time (e.g., weekend), I had to make the drive. I think I only did it about four times though. 2) It can make it harder to go out with classmates.

Other than that, there are really no problems. I do almost all my studying at home or at places near home and rarely need to go to school outside of normal hours.

Re rotations, I'm not very familiar with the options yet.

Not taking my acceptance. I hope it helps someone else out. Good luck everyone!

Hi I was just wondering if there were any other people out there who are waiting to hear if they have recieved an interview or if anyone knows how long it normally takes to hear? My secondary was completed and processed at the beginning of November and my DO LOR was there by mid Nov, just wondering if anyone else was in this same boat or knows what our chances are of still getting an interview?

Thanks so much! And congats to all those on there acceptances!
