PCSOM Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Teresa also said that she was finalizing the budget and was preparing to send it to us.

BTW, has anyone else received anything from the school, other than the packet with the scholarship, vaccination records, etc. It seems like PCSOM told me during my interview that we would be getting stuff freqently through the mail. I just wanted to check with everyone else.

Aaron

Nope. I have received the same info that you mentioned.

That's all you'll get until about June/July depending on when I get my rearend in line (it's sorta of getting kicked around alot lately, thanks to Respiratory Phys) and put out the PCSOM Survival Guide out.

Aaron,

I haven't received anything except for this packet yet either. Actually, I received this packet twice😕 . I guess that PCSOM just wanted to make sure that I got the packet:laugh: .

hossofadoc,

Dont feel bad about Respiratory physiology being difficult. I had a fit learning about it also. I work in Pulmonary rehab and have to explain the pathology of COPD and how the lungs work all the time. That stuff is very difficult, and I am sure that you will do just fine in it. So you are the one that is preparing our survival packs. I figured that would be the faculty preparing that. It must be hard to get that stuff together while taking your classes.

Anyway, thanks for letting us know about that packet. See you soon.

Hey guys, I have a question. Does anyone know if PCSOM posts a list of the students that match? I have a friend of the family that is doing a residency in Dayton, but I dont know if it is at Grandview or somewhere else. Just curious to see if anyone knew. Thanks,

Aaron

Aaron,

Well, atleast I'm not the only one that got the packet twice.

simtech,

congratulations on baby #2! That's so exciting! When is your new arrival supposed to be here?

Aaron,

My trip was great! I went with 3 of my friends and we had a blast. I've had the worst case of senioritis since I've been back. There's nothing like Vegas! I've missed talking with you too. I emailed you about 2 weeks ago and you never responded, so I had a feeling you didn't get it. I was having some computer problems, so that may be why you didn't get it.

I also received two packets in the mail. I hadn't turned any of my stuff in when I received the second one, so I thought they were giving me a hint to get things moving! I felt relieved to know that I wasn't the only one who received two of them!

MISTY!!!!!

I am glad to hear that you had a great trip. I have never been to Vegas, just Pikevegas.

I dont know why they sent two packets, unless they were making sure that we had a copy. I have a lot to talk with you about. I will send you and email shortly telling you what has been going on.

I sent my info in about a month ago, but I still need to have my doc write a letter proving I had a physical. I also need to get this year's TB test.

Hey Misty, have you thought about where you going to live in Pikevegas. I know we have a lot of time left, I just wanted to live in the same area as a lot of classmates in case we needed each other. I am getting real excited about starting. I know we will be busy, but I will be doing something that we love.

Anyway Misty, it was really good hear from you. I would think that you are almost complete with the semester, it seems like you started early in January. i cant believe it is almost April. I will talk with you soon.

Aaron

This is getting a bit ahead, but do any of you know how PCSOM does their elective rotations and sub-internships? By that, I mean do they let us rotate through hospitals that are affiliated with them in some way only, or are we allowed to do a sub-internship at the place we would like to do our residency at?

For instance, let's say I decide that I want to do orthopaedics. When the chance to do a sub-internship comes along, I would like to do it at Campbell Clinic in Memphis, because that is where I would want to be a resident. Would I be allowed to do this?

skb21,

That is a good question. I was wondering that myself. The core rotation sites are a bit confusing to me as well. I think that it is good to plan ahead.

I know there's some 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years lurking around on here... but here's what I've gathered about rotations. Feel free to correct me if I've gotten something twisted. I think sunnydayz, in a previous post, summed up the process well...

You rank your top three core sites, out of the ten, you'd most like to be at. Organizers try to best match students with their top choices, but each core site can accommodate so many people. After you're matched, you stay at the core site (rotating within the different hospitals and clinics within that site) for the next two years (except electives and OP&P). Skb21, to answer your question, you can set up your electives anywhere as long as you get the right paperwork in, the right people to sign, and the approval of the "PCSOM Chair, Department of Family Medicine". If I understand it correctly, you could even manage to do 3 straight months in Memphis.

Aaron,

Any luck with the match results for Pikevegas yet?

Misty,

It is good to hear from you again. I was starting to wonder if you got lost coming back from Nevada.

Hey Willie, na, I have not heard anything yet. I will let you know if I hear something. Take care bro.

Aaron

Aaron,

Okay. I would be interested in seeing the list if you get it.

Willie,

No problem. I was going to PM a couple of PCSOM students and ask them if we could access that. Hey, are you thinking about doing the DO internship and a DO residency?

Aaron

Aaron,

Right now I'm leaning towards going into Path. And since there aren't any osteopathic programs in Path, I don't really see the need to rotating internship. But, things may change in the next four years.

What about you on the DO internship and residency?

Willie,

I was honestly leaning towards an MD residency. But I have been researching some of the Osteopathic Hospitals across the country. I would like to be able to teach future DOs after I am completed with everything. From my understanding, you have to complete the AOA internship and residency to be able to do that.

I found a pretty cool site in Dayton, named Grandview hospital. It looks pretty solid. I would love to sit down some time with some of the 3rd and 4th year students and find where are the best places to complete elective rotations.

Right now, I am leaning towards Internal Medicine with a fellowship in Cardiology. I have also thought about ENT or family practice. Actually, radiology seems pretty interesting to me as well.

I think pathology would be a cool field. BTW, where do you think you would want your CORE site to be during 3rd and 4th year?

As always, a pleasure chatting with you. See you soon.

Aaron

Hey current PCSOMers,

Do you get to travel to a lot of conferences throughout the first and second year? Do the faculty encourage it? In November this year in Huntington, they are having a family practice conference and the people that I am currently working with are speaking at this conference. It is on the weekend, so that is pretty cool. I just wanted to know if PCSOM encouraged attending conferences.

Thanks,

Aaron

Aaron,

I looked at the facutly list of PCSOM and there seems to be about 50/50 mix of DO to MD. I other words, I think that even if you complete an allopathic residency, you can still teach osteopathic students.

Oh, I think that I would want my core site to be in Ashland. With the occasional trip to northern KY or Cincy.

Congratulations jjarecke! You should get your official letter in the mail within a week of getting called. You will have to cough up a 1000 deposit, and they will be sending you a packet with financial aid and scholarship info in it. Let me know if there is anything that I can do to help you. I would be glad to help you. Once again, welcome to PCSOM and I look forward to meeting you.

During my interview tour someone mentioned that there may be a system put in place to let incoming students know about housing that will be vacated by the second years leaving, does anyone know of this?

I heard the same thing. But, I haven't heard anything else about it since then. I guess that that they just haven't gotten it up and going yet🙁 .

Aaron,
thanks for the info. Anybody out there know about "The Anthony" apartments, or any of the other places that are affiliated with The Anthony. I am thinking about getting a place on Pike street and it is like a year lease starting in June or July. Is this the norm for Pikevegas or are there some apartment leases better catered to the PCSOM school year. Any info would be good.

dcratamt,

There are good number of people that live in "The Anthony" apartments on this board. They have so many PCSOM students in them, they are called the "medical dorms". Some of them should be able to answer your question.... along with give the rest of us with some info😀 😀

I live in the dorm and love it. It's where quite a few students live. The apartments have hardwood floors, burber (sp) carpet, secure building (which this isn't really a plus, because Pikeville is close to Mayberry), gated parking lot, and a repair guy named Junior (this is what sold me on the apartments).

Hey dcratamt,

No problem with the info. I was glad that I could help. I am thinking about getting a place at Ridge Cliff, but I have not decided yet. If i get any more info, I will send it to you asap.

Aaron

Congratulations jjarecke!

I'm happy that you are going to be a member of our class and I can't wait to meet you!

Aaron,

Yes, I am finally almost finished with school. My graduation is
May 1, and I think my last final is April 27. I can't wait for summer break! I really need to start looking at apartments soon. Have you pretty much decided on Ridge Cliff? Are they really nice? From the apt. info you sent, they seemed like they would be really nice. How far are the Anthony apts. from PCSOM? I would like to live very close to school if possible.

Has anyone else done any apt. searching yet?

Hey Misty,

I have not decided 100% yet. I do like the lady at Ridge Cliff. The anthony, from my understanding, is very close to campus. I have never seen that building. i have looked for it a couple times, but I was unsuccessful at finding it. There were also some townhouses on the end of 2nd street that were pretty nice too, but I dont think that any will be available for a while. Glad that your classes are almost finished. Take care Misty.

Aaron

Yeah, the Anthony is right down town next too Community Trust Bank and right across the street from the courthouse. It's about a two block walk to campus. If you ever want to look at one of the apartments feel free to pm me and if I'm in town I'll be happy to let you view mine.

hossofadoc,

Thanks for your help in the search for an apartment in pikevegas. We appreciate your help. Did anyone see (nicedream)'s webpage that he made for the LECOM-FL class of 2008? It looks pretty cool.

Aaron,

I read that thread. And my reaction is gez, will people never stop looking at just stats. I know we need a way to compare ourselves but they have to realize that if they don't apply they certainly won't get accepted.

p.s. Aaron, you are living proof that medical school admission isn't about just a persons status, and an inspiration to all of us people with "below average" numbers😀 .

Hey Willie,

Thanks for the encouraging words. I just didnt like the way he/she stated their comments. It just makes me angry when people suggest that if you dont have MCATs in the 30s that you are not going to do well in med school and therefore will be a bad doc. Anyway, I hope you have been doing well. This thread is getting bigger by the day! It is pretty cool to be able to chat with classmates before school starts. I cant believe it is already April, we dont have much longer to go before we start classes. See you guys soon.

Aaron

Aaron,

You are welcome for the encouraging words. I know about the people thinking that if you don't have good MCAT's that you won't do very well in Med School. I just burns me up when people are like that.

I also can't believe that it is already April. Just two more weeks and I will be the ripe old age of 26:wow: . It is kind of sad that we don't have much time left before school starts, and I will have to spend atleast a month of it taking Physics II🙁 .

Hey Willie,

In case I dont get the chance to wish you a happy birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILLIE B!

I turned 27 in January. It actually was one of the best B-Days that I ever had. I am sorry you will be taking Physics II over the summer. I always hard some trouble with Physics, especially the circuits, capacitance, and all that stuff. Good luck to you. Take care buddy!

U-C-O-N-N UCONN, UCONN, UCONN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just returned from a workshop at KCOM with Ed Stiles and now I'm envious of your OMM program. Dr. Stiles seems to have a zeal for life and teaching and his methods are awesome. It was lots of fun meeting him and I learned a lot.
