PCSOM Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Willie B,

I was thinking the same thing when you said that the new apts. would be a perfect place for the incoming first years. I think it would be great if we could all live close together. The guy I spoke with said that they were going to be very nice and very secure, with gated parking lots and security codes. The rent sounded a little high for a one bedroom, but not as bad as Ridge Cliff. He also said that most of the people he rented to that went to PCSOM never had to move their cars b/c most walked to school. Did Aaron email you his apt. info? The number I called is the one listed under the Anthony. The man seemed very nice and said I was welcome any time to come look at the apts., but it will probably be awhile before get a chance to get to Pikeville. He did say that if I wanted one of his new apts. then he would like a security deposit as soon as possible.

Has anyone heard anything from PCSOM lately? I was wondering when we would get financial aid info. I guess I need to be studying, so I'll talk to you guys later.

Misty

Aaron,

You have to enable the karma. It is under the User Cp function.

Disabled Karma. Is that like losing your Mojo baby?!!

Hey Misty,

I think that since it is raining and I will be unable to play golf this saturday, I am going to visit Pikevegas. I am going to call that guy for the Anthony and get directions to the new place he is building. I will post any information that I get from this guy. I will talk to you guys soon.

Aaron.

PS. I have not heard anything from PCSOM lately. I am still getting AES and the Private Loan company stuff situated. Come to think of it, they never sent me a budget. She must be really busy or on her leave.

Hi all, I was just recently accepted about 3 weeks ago. I was actually wondering if anyone could send me some information on available housing. Thanks Tara

Tara,

Look back a page or two. There will be a link to our unofficial class page, which lists info about some available housing.

Thanks Willie, I guess I missed that link before.

Congratulations Tara,

If you send me your full name, degree, college, and hometown, and a pic, I will include your information on our webpage. Once again, congratulations.

Aaron

Ryan and Tara,

I just added you both to the PCSOM Class of 2008 Page on our website. Let me know if I need to make any corrections or additions.

Aaron

P.S. Congratulations to you both.

Hey Everyone.

Misty, you were right. That guy at the Anthony is very nice. I did not get to go to Pikeville today, but does anyone know where the new apartments are being built? He told me that it was near the Baptist church in Pikeville. Does anyone know where that is?

Aaron

Hello All!

Coop (Dennis) and I took a trip to Pikevegas this weekend! Marvin Hensley (realtor of Anthony, etc) showed us around town... Coop ended up getting one of the new apartments...

Aaron: The apartment is located on Wolfard Street (across from Hardees) and will be called The Autumn Suites. They are within walking distance to campus (approximately the same distance as the Ridge Cliff Apartments). There are (I believe) 2 aparements left in this building. They will be very nice once finished... They have a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, and living area. There is a laundry facility located on the ground floor and off street parking is available. They cost $475 a month, not including utilities... The lease begins June 15th.

Hope this Helps!

-Sandifliflops and Coop 😛

Hey Sandiflipflops,

Thanks for the heads up. I called Mr. Hensley on Friday and was inquiring about those apartments as well. I am going to call him tomorrow and apply for one of his apartments at the new place.

I wish that we knew some more of our classmates. That way we could get to know each other better before orientation. I am thinking about moving to Pikeville in the beginning or middle of July. I hope that everything works out that way. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Aaron 😛

Hey all,

The Autumn Suites is the new (or actually renovated) apartment complex that is owned by Marvin Hensley, who also owns the Anthony. I rented an apartment from the Autumn Suites yesterday and will move in on July 15.

Mr. Hensley told me that there were only two apartments left in the Autumn Suites, so if anyone is intersted, you may want to call him. Rent is 475.00 a month and you have to place a 475.00 security deposit to secure the apartment. It is approximately 800 yards from our classes, so it is in a great spot of town. Hope to you see you all soon.

Hey everyone.

I dont know if you guys saw the post or not, but one was started about a fraternity and sorority at PCOM that is supposed to promote osteopathic awareness and help students meet osteopaths in the field. Here is the thread.
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=1401228#post1401228

I was just curious if anyone thinks that this would be a good idea to look into for PCSOM. I was only in an Honor Society in college, so I have no experience with a fraternity or sorority, other than watching animal house on occasion.... hehehehe... j/k.

Anyhow, I thought I would run it by my fellow classmates and get your opinions on the matter. Just thought it might be interesting.

Aaron

It sounds interesting. It would be something good to have on a CV when we are applying for residency programs.

Aaron,

Is this going to be a social fraternity or an academic/honorary one. If it is going to be an social one, I would be more than happy to help you set it up/ provide my experience. However, I won't be able to join myself, as I am already a member of one 😎 .

p.s. I would be more than happy to join the sorority though 😀 . Just kidding.

It is my understanding that it is a academic fraternity. They guy told me that they have social events and a couple of parties... but it was based on creating an environment to help the student osteopath. I will try to get more info from the guy.

Good. Then I can join.

Looks like we were getting a little too close to the bottom of the page there for awhile guys. 😱

Hey Willie,

You can look at the website that discusses the fraternity.

http://www.geocities.com/phisigmagamma

This is the site that the guy in charge of the fraternity posted on a previous thread. If we decided to try and get this, I would like to help the gals get the comparable sorority to be fair. Let me know what you guys think. I am interested if it is an academic fraternity.

Hey guys.

I saw something today in the OR that was very impressive. A modified radical mastectomy was performed on an 80 year old female with an inflammatory ductal carcinoma. In the surgeon's words, this lady was an old country lady who was not married, so no one ever looked at her breasts. She was never sick, so she never went to the doctor. Thus, a lump that could have been treated had she had a stereotactic biopsy or a mammogram was never detected. The tumor was spread into the skin and into the axillary region. The breast itself was nothing but a reddened area of hard tissue. With the lymphatics cut off, causing the inflammation, the breast would have eventually become just a rotten, stinking mess, and that's the reason the surgeon took it off. There isn't much hope for palliation.

This was something that, if you were female and saw it, you would definitely be very conscious of your breasts. With the advances in technology, this is something that isn't seen very much these days. It was very interesting.

About the frat...I was thinking that we all should start a brand new one and call it Sigma Tau Delta (STD)....our mascot could be a crab! Just a suggestion....

Hey Connecticut people, I just got this in my email and I thought that you might want to take a look at this.

A scholarship for residents of Connecticut who plan to return there to practice family medicine.

Hey everyone,

I will be going to Pikevegas tomorrow morning sometime. Does anyone need for me to check out anything for them while I am there? Just let me know.

Aaron 😳

Does PCSOM have a white coat ceremony for incoming freshmen?

If so, does anyone have any info on when that might be.

Simtech,

I am pretty sure that they have a white coat ceremony. I think that they have it in mid to late September, but I am not for certain.

Hey Simtech,

What is your name and other info, so I can add you to the webpage. PM me with the info, that is if you dont mind. 😉

Aaron

Hey guys,

I went to Pikeville this weekend to look around some. I happened to venture to the Breaks Interstate Park about 45 minutes from pikeville. I absolutely loved it! It was very, very beautiful and had lots of trails and a bike path. Just thought I would share this with everyone.

I will be updating some more info on the webpage throughout the day, so if you would like to check the page later, they may be some new info on it. Hope you all had a good weekend.

Hey.

Does anyone know what our schedule will look like this first year?

I'm ready to get past these basic science courses and get into the real action in the clincals.

Hey Keith... I have no idea.... but i am sure there are a couple of 1st and 2nd years on here that would know.

It would be nice to know our schedules ahead of time.

Aaron

First year schedule looks kinda like this -

1st semester:

mon:
8am-clinical skills
9-11am - anatomy lecture
11am- Biochem
12-lunch
1pm-medical ethics

tues:
8am -clinical skills
9-12-clinical skills lab or gross anatomy lab
12pm lunch
1pm - anatomy lecture
2-5pm -clinical skills lab or gross anatomy lab

weds:
8am-OPP lecture #1
9am -12pm -OPP lab group A
12pm - lunch
1pm-4pm-OPP lab group B
4pm-OPP lecture #2

thurs:
8-11am - gross lab
11am-biochem
12pm - lunch
1pm - gross lecture
2-5pm - gross lab

fri:
8am - clinical skills
9am-11am - biochem
11am- current issues in medicine (CIM)

That was my first month's schedule this past fall. Histology was added into the schedule for 3 blocks right after the first block. Embryology was a part of the anatomy course (I don't know if that will be the same for your class).

The class was split into group A & B - these groups would flip labs - i.e. when group A was in clinical skills lab, group B was in gross lab.

Second semester got much easier time wise- no more gross lab to spend hours in! And in my opinion was just easier in general.

Second semester classes: Physiology, OPP, Biochem, Neuroscience, PCSOM rounds and Clinical Skills practicum.

Hope this helps!

That does help. It allows me to get my plan set up for the semester. I'm really glad we will get into clinical skills so soon.

What exactly is PCSOM rounds?

PCSOM rounds is a class that meets with Dr. Betz 5-6 times. Basically each person is assigned a diagnosis (e.g. cervical neck injury) and then you write (i.e. make up) a history and physical exam in a presentation format (power point). Dr. Betz will pick 1-2 people to present their cases to the class during those 5-6 times you meet. Pretty easy, just took time to write a good, complete H&P.

When I saw that in the schedule, I had thought it was actual clinical contact, but it's not 🙁 .

Please feel free to ask about any of the other classes, I'd be happy to help!

Well, that sucks that PCSOM rounds isn't actual clinical contact. Oh well.

Is there a gym in the area that I will be able to lift weights at?

Hey Keith,

Yes, there is a gym at the YMCA. The Y is about 2 miles from the school and has a discounted rate for students. I think it is 135.00 a year for membership. It is on Bob Amos drive. It has a lot of stuff, though i have never been inside, it has a Bball, raquetball, and tennis court, among some other things.

I am probably going to get a membership there as well.

Later buddy,

Aaron

That's good.

At work today, I was working with the orthopod today. He and I were talking about what my schedule would look like. He told me that the best thing I could do would be to go exercise immediately after class. He said to exercise for around an hour, lifting weights or running, go home, eat, and then start studying around 8 pm.

I've got to figure out a way to budget my time on the weekdays, because the weekends will be reserved for football. 🙂

I have a question for first year PCSOM student. I know that PCSOM gives us all of the required textbooks and some equipment, but is there anything else that we need to purchase before school starts. How many three ring binders should we get for out classes, stuff like that.

Oh, do most of the professors provide notes for the classes? Thanks everyone for your comments, I appreciate it.

Aaron

As far as supplies, the only thing I've bought is two 3'' binders (first one broke, needed heavy duty one!). Each student is different though, some of my classmates have binders for each subject, or like myself, some classmates have one giant binder that holds everything. Oh yeah and I've bought a lot of highlighters too. Notes are all supplied to you- if not already printed, they will be on the school's network and can be printed at 2 different printers which are free to the med students. Oh yeah and don't go buy a computer bag, they provided our class with awesome ones, I assume they will do the same next year.

Oh and speaking of the Y, this past year PCSOM worked out a $75/year fee for the YMCA so it might be the same for this upcoming year, I hope. 👍

Are you all getting excited?! I'm getting excited to almost be done - about 30 more days!

Hey Guys,

I just got a letter from the financial aid office. It said that my file wouldn't be reviewed until late July or early Aug. Does anybody know when the if the tuition will be deferred until after the loans come in, or do we have to pay for everything upfront and then get the disbursements from the loans? I guess that I'm just a little nervous since the review of my financial aid info will be cutting it so close to the start of school.

Willie,
Don't worry about tution if your loan isn't in....Pikeville understands that the loans sometimes take a little long to get in. I know last year that a couple of peoples loans were late and they gave them extra money to live on.

Question.

If a textbook is used for clinical skills, is it the Bates Physical Exam and History book?

The textbook used for clinical skills is Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination.
Also, on a side note I beleive that every spot for the class of 2008 has been filled as of this week.

That is good to know that our class is filled up. I cant wait to meet all my classmates and 2nd years in august. I am starting to get a little nervous and a great deal anxious! 😳

See you all soon.
Aaron

Hey guys,

We were starting to get down on the page again. How was everyone's weekend?
