Best case scenario would be working out mornings and then maybe relax for a bit after class. My aerobic routine consists of about 5 minutes on the bike and the rest of my time i spend lifting. It sounds like Keith lifts too so we should be able to find partners. Been to the strip lately? Seen the suites? I heard that they are ready.

Who told you that they are ready Dennis? I was going to call Marvin in the morning and ask him if they would be ready on the 15. I may see if I can go ahead and move in. See you Dennis!

BTW... I do about 20 minutes on the treadmill and about 25 on the rower.. .i need to lose some weight!!!!! But I like to lift too.

ACE

Hell. My cardio workout consists of about 5 minutes on the basketball court shooting some hoops. Then, I get to the good stuff with the free weights. One thing I would like to do is get into the batting cage and take a few swings, but that may not be feasible.

Aaron,
I talked to Mr. Hensley and he said that the Suites were done, so call and double check but I think your set to move in.

Thanks Dennis,

I called Marvin this morning and he said that my apartment will be ready for move in next weekend. So, I will more than like move next weekend into apartment 103 of Autumn Suites. Thanks Dennis for your help. Later bro.

No problem ACE. Good luck with the move.

Happy 4th of July. (I wish I had some firework smileys).

DoSouthPaw,

I took the apartment that Mr. Justice showed me at the bypass apartments. Now, I don't have to keep worrying about having a place to stay for the upcoming year.

Sweet, I hope you like it! Did you get #5? Now back to Neurology...blah!

No,

I got #1. It is on the corner of the building and supposedly one of the larger apartments.

Do you guys visit the medscape website much? Here is a good interactive case study to look at. It tests your ability to read a 12 lead EKG.

Yeah, I am on that site whenever I get a free second............not. No wonder you value your sleep so much, look what you do when your awake.

The Danville Braves and the Kingsport Mets will be playing baseball in Kingsport on August 22. Does anyone want to go see a cheap baseball game before the grind of classes start?

HAHAHAHAHA...

I got it right! You see a lot of hyperkalemia in cardiac patients. I used to see this about twice to three times a week. You also see lots of hypokalemia in individuals whom are on diuretics, such as HCTZ or Lasix.

I am a huge nerd. I have no life.... but I did quit my job of 2 years this past friday. 😀

Hey Dennis, are you still moving into you apartment around the 1st of August?

See you all soon.

Hmmmm... orientation starts on August 16th. I think that the 22nd is a Sunday. If I am in town, I will go with ya. What time are they playing?

Aaron

I don't know what time they are playing yet. The times aren't on the DBraves schedule right now. Maybe I should check out the Kingsport Mets' page.

How far is Danville? Maybe I will go. Congrats on quiting your job ACE. I am done in two weeks. I will be moving in the first week of August and will probably have a lot of stuff to get settled. Does anyone in the Suites know when we should call to have phone and stuff hooked up? 😕

The game is actually in Kingsport, TN. It is about an hour and a half away from Pikeville.

Does anyone know of the specifics regarding the dress code?

The dress code is guys ties with a button up and dress pants. Girls can wear basiclly anything they want (with the exception of clubbing gear)....

Also, on a positive note, the Survival Guide is finished and will be placed in the mail as of tomorrow. Happy reading and if you have any questions regarding it feel free to email me.

Is anyone by chance in Pikevegas yet??? I'm looking for a golfing buddy....

Are short sleeve button ups and a tie ok for guys? Can I get away with a low key hiking shoe/boot in place of dress shoes? I hate dress shoes.

I am moving to Pikeville on Saturday. I love to play golf. I usually shoot in the 90s, but still enjoy playing. I have not found any courses in the immediate area to play. Anyway, I am moving into the Autumn Suites (besides Hardee's) in two days. I am in apartment 103 and will be in and out of town the next few days.

Barrett, I moved from my Huntington Location. I sent Angel a email telling her my new address last week, but I am not sure that she received it. I got your PM, so if you want to read my response, check it yet. Cant wait to meet you all!

Aaron

Hey guys!

I was wondering about the dress code myself. I was doing some shopping today and I really didn't want to buy anything until I found out more info on the dress code. Can girls wear khakis, or do we have to wear things like skirts and dress pants?

Are you all getting anxious for school to start? It's only about 5 more weeks! I can't wait to meet everyone!

As posted previously, women can wear just about anything. (I wouldn't wear jeans or shorts though.) And yes, you can wear khakis. Just pick up some pants and tops that you can mix and match together. Also, it's good to bring a nice dress that you can wear for functions like the Spring Banquet. Good luck to you all! Enjoy the summer!

Are we having a white coat ceremony, and if we are, when is it?

DOSouthpaw,
I was wondering if there will still be time to register for the OMT Fall Symposium when I get to Pikevegas in August?

Hey Everyone,

I have half of my stuff moved into the Autumn Suites. I took some pictures of the inside of the apartment if anyone living there would like to see them.

I went to the YMCA today and talked to the gentleman at the front desk about membership. He asked me if I was a med student and then went on to tell me how much the single membership was. He said that it was $297 for a single membership. He let me look around the place and I have to say it is very nice! It has two raquetball courts, two basketball courts, a huge weight room, a walking track, all kinds of exercise equipment throughout, and they are building a new room on the the outside. I hope that is going to contain a pool!

Anyway, if anyone needs anything, just let me know. I am getting real excited and look forward to meeting you all. Take care.

Aaron

Yes you will still have time to go to the symposium. It's a laid back kind of thing, don't worry. My hub site is in Pikevegas so I will make sure that I whip you into good OMT shape. lol Acutally, my job will mainly be whipping the 2nd years into OMT shape and they will be whipping you. Some of you advanced folk will probably want to hang with me some though. :meanie:

Concerning dress code. Shirt, tie, and kakkis for men. Don't sweat the shoes, just wear whatever you want.

Ladies, certain administrators like you to wear as little as possible, especially if you are fine. I know that hosofadoc said no club wear, no shorts, etc, but that is usually dictated by your classmates. In other words, if people in your class start calling you a ho...think about changing. lol Actually, in our last class meeting our class president said, "I'm tired of folks coming in here looking like Ho de do!" lol As far as the administration goes, show it all. 🙄

Aaron, if the Y told you that much, tell them to kiss your grits. Osteopathic students pay like 65 dollars for a single membership. Don't join till school starts and you can go over there in mass and get your way. 😱

And yes to the white coat ceremony. It will be during the first month usually. Payson will let you know when it is during orientation. Last years was very nice; the AOA president spoke. Mine, two years ago, was pretty pathetic because our speaker sounded like he was 3 sheets to the wind which was pretty embarrassing. If the school gets the white coats donated expect a coat with the consistancy of cardboard (what I got). If they are not donated, the school will spring for some nice ones, but you probably won't get a littmann steth (this happened last year). Either way, you'll get some good stuff and some not so good stuff.

Speaking of stuff. The school is issue you a portable OPP table. The thing is ok...but not too nice. The UAAO will be offering a trade in deal. You trade in your table to the UAAO and we will give you 30% off a top of the line table. The discount ends up being about two times what your table is worth and you can get a very nice one (top of the line, lifetime warantee, etc) for about 200 bucks. Be looking out for that. Well worth the investment, especially since you don't have to buy books, equipment, etc... To top it all off, if you trade it in and end up going to the AAO convocation on spring break, we try to bring the trade end tables along so you get 30-40 dollars off your reg. fee. It's in Reno this year, so I don't know how feasable it will be to get the tables there, but we can try to work it out.

-Later!

ACE send me the pictures. 😀

Hey Dennis, I will try to send those pics to you later this afternoon. I have to go out of town for a little bit. I will send them when I get back. I think Marvin told me yesterday that the second and third floor is complete. He still needs to finish some work on the outside of the building and finish the laundry room. He hurried and finished most of my apt yesterday so I could move some of my stuff in from my parents garage.

Misty, I will probably PM you later today with those pics. I was impressed with the Autumn Suites. I really like my apartment. It is by far the nicest apartment that I have ever lived in.

Hey SouthPaw, I thank you for your input on the Y. I did not get a membership yet. Are a lot of the students at PCSOM members at the Y? I plan on going to the Y around 6am before class starts. I usually dont like to exercise in the evening due to fatigue.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I thought someone had stated that the membership at the YMCA was a lot cheaper than that.

Does anyone have an updated list of the core sites for third and fourth year rotations? While at my interview, I was told that one of the core sites would be in Tupelo, MS, which is about 45 minutes from where I currently live. Based on that, I do not think the PCSOM official website's rotations manuel is updated.

This leads to a couple more questions. First, do you have a choice of where you want to rotate for the third and fourth years? I was told that they try to send you to the state that you are from. If I can get in Tupelo, that would be ideal for me. Also, I'm curious about the 4th year electives. I know that we have four months of electives, one of which has to be in medicine and one of which has to be in surgery. What sort of latitude do we get on chosing these elective sites? For example, I'm leaning towards orthopaedics. I would like to do a sub-internship with Campbell Clinic/University of Tennessee in Memphis, TN. I've probably asked this before, but I don't want to go back through this damn thread to find it if I did. 🙂

What types of supplies (reference books, notebooks, etc.) are recommended for our first year of medical school?
Does anyone know of a first or second year female student who might still be needing a place to stay?

Hey Aaron! Will you send me the pics of Autumn Suites too?
Thanks

Hey Tara,

I will send them right now. I will have to send a few emails with attachments though because it will bog down my phone line. Let me know if you dont get them.

Aaron

skb21,

Tupelo is a core site for us. A friend of mine from another school told me that they accepted 2 students from Pikeville this year. I don't know if this is the number they accept every year or if it varies.

I could not find any med student info on their site, but checkout http://www.nmhs.net/fmrc/residents2003.asp for a list of family medicine residents (one of which is from Pikeville). I also heard mention of Biloxi and possibly Meridian while I was interviewing, but I have not heard anything official.

Keith,

If I understand things correctly, (Real Big IF 😉 ) we will be allowed to do two, unrestricted electives anywhere that we want to do them. i.e. they don't have to be done at our core site. The other two electives, must be done at a PCSOM affiliated core site. Perhaps, a current second or third year can correct me on this if I am wrong.

On another note.... I just got the student survival guide from Pikevegas today, along with our orientation schedule. Looks like the time is finally getting here for us to start school.

Good. So I'll get to do a two month rotation at Campbell Clinic if I so choose. Great!

I also received my survival guide today. I can't believe it's almost time for school to start. After reading the packet, I got a little nervous. I think the reality of beginning med school is finally starting to hit me! Until now, it just seemed so far off.

I wanted to tell you guys about an experience I had on Friday. My grandmother was getting ready to sweep off her porch, and she tripped over a broom. She fell down face first and got a pretty bad cut just over her eyebrow that had to have stitches. While we were in the ER, the doctor I shadowed last summer was the doc who stitched her up. While he gave me a quick lesson in suture technique and told me how to remove the stitches, he started telling me how he has recently had some Pikeville students rotate through the ER, and he said he was VERY impressed with what he saw. He said he couldn't believe how well PCSOM had prepared them, and he said that I couldn't possibly get a better education anywhere else. I thought this was very interesting seeing as how last summer he was trying to discourage me from applying to PCSOM b/c he said the school was too new and perhaps I would get a better education somewhere else. I loved it when I heard that his story had changed!

Aaron,
Would you care to email me those pics of the Autumn Suites? Are you settled in yet?

Misty

I hate livin' in CT cause I will probably be one of the last ones to get my survival guide. 😡 Ace thanks again for the pics. How do you like your place? Is it big enough?

Hey Misty,

I just sent you those pics. I hope that you enjoy them. I have not completely moved in yet. I have to move in a couple more things and have to contact the cable company, phone, etc. I really, really, really, really like my apartment. It was much better than I had hoped for!

See you soon Misty.

Hey Dennis.

No problem on the pics. I thought the apartment was plenty big enough for me. It is quite cozy. I am looking forward to staying there more permanently. I probably wont get my survival packet anytime soon because I have temporarily moved into my parents home until I get completely moved into the Autumn Suites. The mail is supposed to be forwarded here, but you know how the postal service can be sometimes.

But, I really liked the apartment. Once he gets the outside finished and the odds and ends together, it will be a sweet place to call home. He really seems to like to help out his medical student tenants. I cant wait to meet you all. I am very excited. A little nervous, but very excited.

There was a great article in the Charleston Gazette on Saturday about Pikeville. I will have to share it with you all. See you soon.

Aaron

Hey Dennis.

I just read your email about the airconditioner. That is the air conditioner in all the apartments. If you put it on high cool, it will cool of the majority of the apartment very quickly. It is not central air, but I dont think that it will be necessary in these apartments, but I could be wrong. I thought it was quite comfortable in my apt and I am part polar bear.

The kitchen was the bomb. I loved the kitchen. Dishwasher, garbage disposal, refridgerator with automatic ice maker. It is really a nice apartment. My bedroom is freaking huge! The bathroom is pretty large as well. There is one closet in the bedroom that should fit a "guys" wardrobe, but I am not sure for the ladies. I guess it depends on how much clothes they bring.

When is everyone moving in? If I am in, come by and let me know. I will try to help you move in if you would like. Later everyone.

Aaron

Hey....how about that Survival Guide, dosen't it ROCK!!!! I don't know about you all....but that SOMA group is the best looking club in the whole thing!!! j/k
