Anyone else going to Pikeville next year?

Hey!

I sent my secondary app in last week...so still waiting to hear back. How long did it take from recieveing secondary to being offered an interview???

About 3 days after they received the secondary.

i'm interviewing there next week, any advice would be great!
a friend of mine there said they've only filled about 40 spots, so that must be why i haven't heard more about pcsom on sdn.

Hey!

I'll be heading down the Mountain Pkwy early August!

See you then!

Just kidding of course...Can't wait to meet everyone at orientation July 30th. Anyone found an apartment yet? I need suggestions, because I've heard that if you wait too long you'll be left with the bottom of the barrel apartments.

Congrats on being accepted. I am a 4th year at Pikeville, whom is from Pikeville so if there is anything that I might be able to assist you with feel free to ask.
As housing goes:
The Anthony-nice apartments, close to campus, just small and a little pricey
Turntable-nice townhouses, less then a mile from campus, but pricey (reasonable if you have a roommate).
The Adams townhouses-nice, less then a mile from campus, don't know about price
The Gutti's (a couple of doctor's in Pikeville also have a decent amount of places to rent, they are usually within walking distance to campus, and nice apartments).
Someone is building new townhouses by Pike Co. Central H.S., I don't know the price, but they look really nice, only problem is they are about a 4-5 mile drive to campus.

I would start looking ASAP, the housing/apartment market is alot better since I first started, supply demand is finally catching up. There are some nice apartments for reasonable rates, but you might have to drive 7-10 miles, it just depends on how close to campus you want to be.

Now, the adive on how to survive 1st year....
I was in your shoes 4 years ago, we have almost the same prof. (with the exception of Anatomy/Neuro which your class will have one of the best in the business, in my opinion).

Anatomy/Neuro-stay on this course...live in the lab, go through your notes at least 6 times(I went through mine 8 times apiece...that's where I felt comfortable). If you want to read over the summer...read Anatomy and Neuroscience made ridiculously simple.

Histo-if you had a histo course in undergrad, then you will be able to sleep though this class...if you didn't...then you have to study for this course, but it's not a bad course, just stay up on it.

Biochem-read the notes at least 4 times, if you want to do a little extra, read BRS Biochem. (If you had biochem in undergrad, then you are ahead of the game).

Physiology- This is a good course, you will need to read your notes 4-5 times, depending on which prof. is teaching the course. One prof. is great, the other is still trying to figure out what physiology is. Use BRS Physiology for his part of the class.

ENT-Good course, go to class, pay attention...if your class dosen't do this, then he gives test that are almost impossible to pass. Read his notes 4-6 times, depending on how well you did on Head and Neck anatomy.

Optho-Our class was difficult, the year ahead of us it was easy...so I'm not really sure how to take describe this class...just read the book 2-3 times, make an outline of the book and be ready for questions that are out in left field.

OMT-Litman/Stiles are a good instructors, they both have amazing minds, it's now that I'm only able to comprehend what they were truly teaching us. My advice is to go to class/lab and pay attention.
Saverse and the OMT Manual will help you the most in this class.

Clincal Skills-this class has changed since I took it. I would suggest that you ask the class ahead of you about this one...sorry I'm not able to give more info.

Good luck student doctors and if you need any help at all feel free to ask. Med school is a difficult 4 years, but as you reflect back you will be amazed at what you have accomplished. At times, it will seem like this is an impossible task that you have selected, but remember their are people a head of you that felt this same way (I'm one of them) and I made it through.

I'll be living in the Anthony Apartments next year. What apartments are you looking at?

How pricey are the Anthony's apts.? I'd like to live as close as possible, but not if it's a difference of several hundred bucks. If anyone has any numbers, links to websites, etc. I'd appreciate it....I'd like to have some idea of where to look before making several trips back and forth (I live about 3.5 hours away now).
Thanks

Anthony- 500-525 for a one bedroom.

I might also check the classifeds in Applachian News-express for other placed to live.

I am going to Pikeville. I will be at orientation on July 30th, see you all there. Anyone else from Arkansas going to be starting school there in August?

I have pictures of the Anthony Apts. If you want them please PM me and I'll forward them to you.

does anyone on here use facebook?

Just now found this group. I will be attending Pikeville this fall as well. I like the idea of getting everyone's facebook. If you want mine just message me.

does anyone have contact info for any of the apartments?

Do we only have five future PCSOMer's who are also SDNer's? I haven't checked but I'd imagine our class for next year has to be getting pretty full by now. See you all in August.

Does anyone know what the price range for the Ridge apts. is?

sorry, I don't know the contact info for those apts.

I don't know the price for those apartments either, sorry.

Does anyone know what the price range for the Ridge apts. is?

Ridgecliff is 525-535 for 1 bedroom and about 635 for a 2 bedroom......i got the information from a student, but haven't been in contact with the owners or managers...they said that the SGA are making us a housing info list though, so we should know more then👍

Does anyone know when they are supposed to send out info about our financial aid packages? Maybe I missed something in the mail...

You should be getting that info any day now. It takes the department a while to get that stuff squared away. When we left Pikeville last year, they had one person working on 250 students Finanical aid packets.

If you guys need info on Pikeville, click on my Unofficial PCSOM Students' Page link in my signature. I have some info on Pikevegas on there.

Good luck to you all.

Aaron

I just got my financial aid stuff in the mail yesterday..So I would give it a couple more days before worrying you missed it 😱 if your's still hasn't come.

I was curious to see if any KY residents are applying for the KHEAA scholarship. I'm pretty sure I'll do it, but if you decide not to become a pcp then the 6% per year fee on top of repaying the scholarship seems pretty steep. Then again, I guess it's still better than the tuition at most D.O. schools. I was also wondering if the scholarship still applies if you do an allopathic residency...anybody have any advice?

There are a number of students in our class who have taken the scholarship and aren't sure if they will do PC. The 6% is still better than the APR on stafford loans so even if you don't go into PC you'll still save money by taking that scholarship (assuming you'd be taking out that much more in stafford loans if did not take the scholarship). And to my understanding (which I'm fairly certain is correct) it doesn't matter if you do AOA or ACGME for your PGY's, as long as it's PC.

Thanks. I didn't think about the fact that 6% is still lower than the Stafford. That makes the decision a lot easier...

Hey!

Anyone from NoKy/Central Ky/Southern Oh want to meet up for dinner/drinks prior to orientation?

Hey everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself! I will be attending PCSOM on the fall and will be meeting all of you shortly for orientation! I am from Greenville, Mississippi! Also, have anyone found anywhere to live yet? I think I may need to get started on that.

You guys can find some of the apartment buildings and landlords in Pikeville from my webpage. It has information on the area, such as schools, banks, etc.

Good luck to you all. I am almost a fourth year, so if you need any help, just let me know.

Good luck to you all.

Aaron

what's everyone up to this summer?

Just working and planning vacations here...Is anyone doing anything productive to prepare for school?

Just finishing up work and taking a couple of months off to vacation and get as much partying out of my system as possible.

I just wanted to introduce myself...I will be attending PCSOM in the fall. I am originally from that area but moved 7 years ago for school. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone soon!

Hey fellow PCSOM 2011 members!

Any of you heading to Bonnaroo this summer?

Anyone interested in heading to the Master Musicians' Festival in Somerset (Ky)? It's happening the week before orientation.

Oh, and does anyone know when Hillbilly Days is happening this year?

Hillbilly Days is already over (april 19-21)

I was considering it..isn't Old Crow Medicine Show playing?

Sorry, I really like to say "dude" and it isn't just a Big Lebowski thing. Anyhoo, Old Crow IS playing the Master Musicians' thing. I am big fan! They play a great live show! I'm going to try and make as many good shows as possible this summer. Built to Spill 😍 is also touring - 7/2 Cleveland and 7/7 Brooklyn w/Cat Power. So east43rd, any "must-see" shows on your calendar? Given your location and screen name will you be heading to the Southgate House for the Hold Steady or the Avett Brothers?

I don't know of either of those bands, sad to say, but I will be at the Southgate House for Railroad Earth on July 8th (hopefully).... Although I might go to the Dave concert in Illinois on that day. And yes, I too am a fan of OCMS-have not seen them yet though.

east 43rd-

have fun at the railroad earth and dave shows. i'm assuming you mean dave matthews? if not, i'm not sure who, dave grisman maybe? i haven't seen dave matthews since '99, crazy but true.

also, anyone else still waiting on a fin. aid package?

Hello, everybody just wanted to introduce myself. I'll be in pikeville's 2011 class and I'm from Minnesota (of all places). I'm actually heading to beautiful pikeville this weekend...if any of you will be around let me know. Also if any of you have facebook and/or myspace...my name's Brooke Beehler. Have a great mother's day!

Does anyone have any information concerning our third and fourth year rotations?

If you go under PCSOM'S website and click on the tab for clinical sciences. There is information on rotations there. Download the clinical rotations manual and you will see a list of rotations sites and a lot more information about rotations.

THANKS SO MUCH!!!

I wonder how flexible they are with rotation sites? If a student could set something up at another hospital, and there was a DO there on board, how often the college actually approves that kind of thing? I guess we have a little while before we need to worry about that, but does anyone know😕

Hey, I know someone who graduated from PCSOM two years ago that set-up several rotations at hospitals other than those listed on the website. She had to do all the legwork herself. Hope that helps.

7Ju7Ju7, I work at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati right now, and during my interview at PCSOM I was told they were working to set up rotations in the future with one of the hospitalists here, who's a D.O....so I know they are probably constantly trying to expand their rotation sites. I noticed you're from Ohio, so I thought you might be interested.

Pikeville has their program set up where you do the majority of your rotations at your CORE site. You have to do all of the following rotations at your CORE site:

Family Medicine (2 months)
Emergency Medicine (2 months)
Internal Medicine (2 months)
Pediatrics (2 months)
Surgery (2 months)
OB/GYN (1 month)
OP&P (1 month, may be done at site with DO if approved by Dr. Litman)
Medical/Surgical Subspecialties (3 1-month each rotations)

You also have these requirements that may be done anywhere you wish, but you have to set these up and you have to get it approved through the school:

Medicine elective (1 month)
Surgery elective (1 month)
Psychiatry (1 month)
Unrestricted electives (2 1-month electives)

You get one month off for Step II Board Prep, you will start your clinical years in August of your third year, and you will finish in April of the year you graduate.

The school has opened a few sites, and unfortunately closed a few sites since I started in 2004. We have actually gained far more than we lost. Most people get their first choice in where they want to do their rotations, so it usually isnt a problem unless the site is very competitive among the class. In years past, Norton, VA was a very popular core site. I initially wanted to go there, however, there were 10 people trying to get 5 spots. In the end, I ended up going to Corinth, MS and have absolutely loved my decision to do so. It was a brand new site this year and has never had students or residents until we came down, so me and my classmates here with me get to lots of cool stuff like 1st assist in all surgery, place central lines, A-lines. I actually got to insert a Swan-Ganz catheter a couple of months ago. I hear that is almost unheard of as a third year medical student.

I want to give you all a little advice. I know when you start you will feel overwhelmed. Keep in mind, that third and fourth year will be there before you know it. I enjoyed the first two years at PCSOM, but I have to admit the 3rd and 4th year has been a lot of fun, despite the stress levels. Good luck to you all and have a great summer.
