Those of you who are re-applying from last year, how did your interviews last year go? Did you have any that you thought went really well but didn’t end up matching?

Anyone have any luck off of a waitlist this cycle so far?

Anyone have any luck off of a waitlist this cycle so far?
I got off one early this month. That was the only waitlist spot I had been on. I had generally otherwise either gotten interviews or rejections. One of the other programs kinda has me in a limbo of a "All our interview spots are full but if something opens up we might let you know", so Idk whether to treat that as a waitlist or soft rejection.

Question for everyone. One fo my programs is saying that match day is 11/17/21, which is the EM fellowship match. Does this mean if I participate in that match I can't match at any of the programs in the pediatrics subspecialty match in December? Thanks for the help!

That’s weird. I was under the impression that all of the programs participated in the Pediatric sub specialties match

That can’t be right since pediatric emergency medicine is not even under the EM match. It’s under the pediatrics sub specialty match…
So confused

Are we entering the end of the interview cycle now? I guess middle October is fairly close to the finish line…

Does anyone have an info about Tower Health/Saint Christophers? I heard through a colleague that they have had multiple fellows quit... Anyone know why?

Also, when are y'all sending thank you letters, have you been doing it after every interview for the programs you like/are considering or waiting to send it at the end of interview season?

I know there is no method to the madness. Hope everyone's interviews are going well!

...I didn't send any thank you emails... i guess I will send them at the end of the season before rank day. I didn't do it for residency either. I wonder how much something like that affects your rank. I know my residency program usually assigns the ranks the afternoon of interviews (so before receiving thank you letters/emails)

Dayton Children's is a newly accredited program still looking for applications. Thought I would give a shout out for those still looking for interviews.

Also, when are y'all sending thank you letters, have you been doing it after every interview for the programs you like/are considering or waiting to send it at the end of interview season?

I know there is no method to the madness. Hope everyone's interviews are going well!
I personally have been sending emails within 2-3 days after the interview to everyone that interviewed me but not the fellows. I have been sending them to everyone even if I don't like them, but that may just be a personal thing that was engrained in my life by my mother haha.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share some advice from someone who matched out of cycle last year in PEM - it is competitive and not getting the interviews you want is disheartening but put in some thought in the thank you notes, contacting fellows before and after interviews with questions and try to attend those “happy hours” and ask questions. You will stand out and people would remember you better. It’s good for both matching and for your PEM network one day. In case you don’t match - there were at least 3-4 newly accredited programs after the match - so who you know or impressed even if you didn’t match the regular cycle still matters cause PD talk to each other and share impressions of you for the open spots that might come up. Good luck!

Does anyone know if there are any trick to find out early if you matched?

Is anyone sending emails stating that you will rank a program first? I know this is a thing for residency, but do people do this for fellowship?

I know most of my co-residents and I did. Programs still want to take applicants that they know want to come. Not sure how much it helps but will still be doing it.

For what it's worth, the email from NRMP made it clear that you are allowed to do that as long as you aren't soliciting them for match info on you.

I'll probably do this.

Any thoughts on sending emails to the top 3 programs saying you're going to rank them highly, or should you just be sending the "you're my top program" email?

One more week everyone! I got 7 ranks but can’t shake the feeling that I didn’t match 😬

to be honest I don’t think any of us can truly feel safe no matter how many places we ranked 🥺

I ranked 6 last year and didn't match so it's certainly possible. But it is what it is at this point and trust me, regardless of the results, we'll all be ok.

Feeling a little regret guys. Went on 7 interviews but only ranked 5 because one program was to far (across the country) and another program had the most tired looking fellows I’ve ever seen. I don’t want to look tired… so I didn’t rank them. Whelp not much more of a wait now

How does the match work? On the 15th when exactly do we get the email? Is it at a specific time?

I think at noon we get an email saying if we matched and when u click the link it tells you where

At 12pm EST we all receive the email both with the “congrats you matched/we regret to inform you….” And the actual match assignment!

Less than 24 hours and I’m in full panic mode lol. Wish they would at least tell us if we matched or not

Ranked 8 programs and didn't match. Devastated. People who didnt match last year, what did you do in the year before re applying?

I feel your pain. I actually took on a chief resident position at my home program after not matching last year, and got involvded with a couple things (some research, advocacy, wellness stuff).

Then I ranked 6 PEM programs and 12 PHM programs and again didn't match. maybe I should consider a change of career lol.

For you all that went unmatched, I am really sorry to hear! But I do have a question, do you all apply broadly, or are you geographically limited, or apply only to top ranked programs?

I applied quite broadly, probably to about 45 programs spread out throughout the country. Got 6 PEM interviews and ranked them all.

I matched. Applied to 30 programs. Interviewed at 7 programs. Ranked 5 programs. Matched at my #1. I am a US MD who is currently at a community program on the east coast.

Had 22 interviews, went on 16, ranked 15 and matched number 15. Also received four emails from programs saying I would be a great fit.

Happy I matched but... Very surprised. Hope that puts into perspective how competitive it just have been.

Congrats to everyone who matched! Applied to 64 programs. Interviewed at 18 (ranked all 18). Matched at my #10. I am a US MD at an academic program in the Midwest (not a freestanding children's hospital). Have a red flag on my application with a failed USMLE exam. Have 1 publication & 3 national conference presentations. No chief year. Received emails & phone calls from PDs & APDs in my top 5 (an APD even specifically said "we really want to have you here") prior to rank list submission.

So yah, it's super competitive. Take love letters with a grain of salt.

The match statistics this year were absolutely bonkers…did anyone else see them?

2021 match:
293 applicants for 200 slots; 93 unmatched

2022 match:
About 340 applicants for 214 slots; about 126 unmatched.
It was insane this year. PEM continues to set records in unfortunate ways. Best of luck to everyone who didn't match for next year! What I did notice this year is that there were about 3-4 new programs, so hopefully that increases chances for some next year!

I matched! Applied 64 programs, Interviewed at 12, ranked all 12! Matched at #4.
I am a H1B visa requiring IMG, at a University pediatric residency. Have an MPH, 11 publications, 3 ongoing research projects, no chief year, lots of community work and simulations written for ACEP. Involved in Med ed. Have my own startup company as well.
did not receive a single love letter, but one PD had called me to invite for the interview and that's where I matched!
Its getting tough out there!!!
Good luck everyone. Happy to answer questions.
