Bringing the Penn thread back to the top.

Would any of the LA interviewees, or current Penn students, like to share their thoughts on New Bolton Center? What did you see on your tour there? I've never been to NBC, but I want to do a mixed animal track, so I would like to hear some first hand accounts of the facilities.

Thanks for the input!! 🙂

PS: I am currently checking out the website, but I appreciate hearing other people's personal opinions too!!

Not sure if anyone ever responded, but here's my take...

The New Bolton Center and Penn's equine department and caseload was the biggest deciding factor for me to attend Penn, and that was pre-Barbaro 😉

When you get out there, it is in PA horse country and the area is very pretty. The NBC itself is very pretty, too. Theres the front area with reception, radiology, the pharmacy, and outpatient area, an auditorium/class room type thing, post room, some treatment rooms, and probably some other areas that I haven't seen. Behind that there are 4 inpatient barns, one of which is for ruminants and other non-equines. To the right of that is Sx, the NICU (neonatal ICU), ICU, etc. The NICU is very nice, I was just there the other day and it was very up to date and spacious. There's also a colic barn and an isolation barn. Scintigraphy/Imaging, the treadmill, Podiatry all have their own little buildings/areas, too. There is also a house used for various events, a dormitory for students who are out on rotation that don't live in the Kennett Square area, a trailer for residents and interns to hang out, some offices, a library, and probably some other stuff that Im missing.

When you get away from the main hospital, there are several different operations. There is a working dairy farm, a working swine production unit, a poultry unit, an aquaculture farm, and the Hoffman Center. The Hoffman Center is the repro center for horses, cows, alpacas, goats, and pretty much anything that needs to get pregnant. A lot of student labs are held there. There are probably some other goings on away from the main hospital that I don't know about either.

From the schools I've been too, the New Bolton Center is definitely the most spacious and spread out. I feel like a lot of other schools have their LA hospital crammed in onto their campus and dont have the ability that NBC has to spread out and offer so many different programs. By splitting the campus, the SA hospital is able to be in an urban environment and reap that caseload and the LA hospital is able to be out in horse country with the ability to spread out and have the space needed to run effective LA programs. The drive out there is, of course, the price that has to be paid, although I find that it isn't too bad, especially if you plan it so you're not heading out or back at rush hour.

They have all the fun new toys (MRI, DR, treadmill, scintigraphy, recovery pool, etc, etc.), fantastic clinicians, great techs and staff in my experiences, and one of the largest LA caseloads. There are also many opportunities between the equine club, repro club, food animal club, labs for classes, foal sitting program, and shadowing programs to spend time out there for students who are interested, just because you live in Philly doesn't mean you can hang out with the ponies 🙂

Hopefully that helps!

I don't know if this information helps or not but I've been informed while at Penn that they're interviewing approximately 270 people this year. There're 9 groups of people being interviewed, two of them being LA interest. The rest split between SA, mixed, public health, etc.. Each group containing approximately 30 people. So multiply 30 individuals by 9 groups. = 270 people being interviewed. I was interviewed last friday and I'm not sure what number group I was. My guess is they're only taking ~110 out of those 270.

They may take more than that, depending on class size. I'm sure someone from Penn would have a better idea, but usually vet schools know that some of those accepted, especially OOSers, will turn down the acceptance if they get into their in-state/contract. Since Penn takes so many OOSers, they probably do accept more than their class size.

I got an interview to UPenn today for March 28th!!! 😀 Good luck to all of those still waiting... I hope you all get good news soon!

Thanks guys!!! I don't know what I would do without SDN! Congrats to BigGreenVet as well!!!

that's really exciting, congratulations!!!

just out of curiosity, did you get an email or was in by snail mail??

I got my interview invitation for March 28th also. It was e-mailed around noon. Good luck everyone!

Email around noon eastern time.

I'm wondering.. if everyone who received that noon email accepts the interview... if that might not be the end of it for the rest of us. This is the 9th interview date... so I guess there is no 3/21... and it seems like the invites were sent in one mass email...

congrats shuvball!

although I'm completely disappointed for those of us who haven't heard. I had a small little glimmer of hope for Penn, but I think that faded now...That sucks. I don't know if you're right Shanomong, but what you said makes complete sense to me. I would love to think it's not the case, and that invites will keep coming, but I'm done being hopeful! It's too hard sometimes!

that sucks 🙁

Yeah it does... 🙁

Hopefully I'm just wrong... but I'm feeling pretty pessimistic right now.

I emailed... first time I've tried to contact them in any way to get info... hopefully it's not seen as a huge nuisance... I'll let u know if I get any kind of response...

I'm kind of hoping that if I've been rejected they'll "respond" to the email by mercifully just sending me my rejection email...

sorry that was rude of me.
of course a big congrats to all the people with good news!!!!

and for the rest of us. . . .i guess it's still a somewhat. . .less hopeful waiting game? although, i sure hope not.

😕

Yeah it does... 🙁

yeah i'm not feeling great either... 🙁
they better not see it as a nuisance...this is incredibly stressful!
good luck Shanomong and every one of us still waiting...

If anybody hears anything, please let us know. I haven't reached out to Penn at all yet, but I am at work and so can't give them a call. But I am also guessing this may be "game over".

if you can believe it, my webmail email is not working this afternoon... is this really happening to me?

😱😱😱

cyrille: since you're already a student there and have been through all this. .

do they only send out one batch of invites and that's it, or is it spread over a couple of days.

just asking, cause if i can assume the answer is no already, it's time for me to start searching for an apt and a car down here in MIA to start settling in for the next year.

thanks 🙂

Anyone know how long it takes Penn to send out official offer letters? I interviewed last Friday (2/29) and got a phone call that night telling I had been accepted but still haven't received an official letter in the mail.

Took it three weeks to get to me, so sit tight!

well. i thought the last invites were going out next week too.

but that would mean that there is an april interview date. . . .and didn't people say that they would not do that?

I think most schools have to send out acceptance letters before april 15th.

My letter came the next Friday.

What pecentage of people who are being interviewed on March 28th do you think are going to get accepted? Does anyone know how many spots are still open at this point?

Just left message on the Penn Admissions voicemail...does anyone know if they usually call back in a timely manner?

Nevermind. The rejection email just clicked in my inbox. My 2008 cycle is officially over. Here's to next year! 😀

i'm sorry about that. 🙁 i'm still waiting.

from what i expect. we'll all go through this whole thing together again next year. :luck:

But going through it "together", to me, is better than alone!

But going through it "together", to me, is better than alone!

Awe, well put. I have to say I would have been wayyyyy more upset these past few days if it wasn't for this website. You guys rock.

Still no word for me... and no response yet to the email I sent... lol my fiance is checking my email as much as I am, I almost didn't receive an email from a professor because I saw "no new messages" in my inbox because he'd read it already... 😀

Sorry to post this in the middle of this thread were people are still anxiously waiting for some news, but it seemed like the most appropriate place to get an answer...

I got into Upenn C/0 2012 and the dean of admission (might have been assistant) told us that it is possible to defer admissions by 1 year in order to set up residency. That being said, I am an OOS and am contemplating doing this. Can any current student at Upenn tell me the true difference in cost between IS and OOS assuming you receive all the benefits (ie-in state grants) that are possible?

Good luck to all that have interviews and to those that are still waiting for some good news...

Per year:
$6,000 (tuition/fees) +
$4,200 (commonwealth grant, amount may vary) =
----------
$10,200 this year

There's also a $5,000 annual commonwealth scholarship available only to in-state students ($20k total for 4 years), so if you wanted to count that as part of all the grants that are possible, the total annual in-state benefit would be ~$15,000.

Wow,I never realized how much of a difference it makes... that's definitely a silver lining to the impending rejection email cloud! Since we're moving there anyway...

the state grant is the commonwealth scholarship i believe... its been 4200 the last 2 years

Same name (in some correspondence), but separate (got both). Not sure how many of the commonwealth scholarships are given to each entering class.

How do you get the latter scholarship (5k)? Is it need based, merit based?

It was in the acceptance letter (the formal postal mailed one). I presume it's merit based, as that was before we'd filed for aid.

i was accepted to penn as well and its my dream school, but i can not justify spending 150K more than my perfectly good in-state school or Texas A&M (which has offered me an in state scholarship). i was considerig the deferment option as well. do any current vet students know how common this is and what people do on their year off? Is it really more economical than just working the extra debt of the year after you graduate? thanks, i appreciate any help.

I would go straight to the source and clarify this with someone in the admissions department. It's my distinct impression that Penn doesn't allow you to change your state status once you're accepted, and that includes deferring for a year. Maybe things have changed?

ooh they definitely let you defer to establish pa residency. the admissions office and my interviewer both discussed this option with me

not to change the subject back or anything (& congrats to all who have already heard about acceptance)..but, is anyone left that has not heard about an interview yet?

I'm left!! 😳 My stats seem relatively competitive so I'm hoping that I'm not part of the mysterious "not being considered at all" rejection group that they're holding out on alerting until the end....

While chances seem slim, I'm hoping that there will be one more group of interviewees invited this week, since the reported deadline for interview invites is March 15th. If last Thursday's invites were the last ones I'm not sure why they wouldn't have sent out all of the final rejections at that time as well. So here's to hoping 30 more of us will have a chance! 🙂

Good luck everyone!!!

I'm left too! I don't think my application is very competitive, but you never know. Hopefully we'll know where we stand by the end of the week! good luck!!!!

I still haven't heard either...I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will do the same for you all! :luck:

i'm left as well!! though i'm not exactly holding my breath...it would just be nice to know one way or the other so i can for sure make summer plans.

good luck to everyone!! :luck:

me too me too!
ohman guys.
good luck to us still waiting!!

I'm left too! And I feel the same way... I can't say I'm not getting rejected (because lets face it... at this point in the season it's more likely than not), but I would think that my stats and experience disqualify me from the immediate rejection toss... I'm thinking maybe they're holding onto a few to possibly send out invites if people defer (those of you talking about it above, I say go for it 😀 but that's completely selfishly motivated so ignore me..) or decline the invitation? I hope!!

But either way, it'll feel good to have a solid idea of what's going to happen next year by the end of this week 😳.

It's crazy... I manage to forget all about this stuff over the weekend because I know I'm not going to hear anything, but as soon as Monday comes it starts occupying all of my thoughts all of the time again...
