Ok, just to satisfy Emio and Vnair... 😉

What banks are there in University City? I checked out Wachovia and B of A and neither have any ATMs across the river...but have tons in Center City. Right now my checking account is with Wachovia, but I'm open to switching to a better bank (one that has locations in both Raleigh and U City would be ideal).

Also, I'm headed up this weekend--we leave tomorrow morning! I'm super excited 🙂 We're checking out a few condos and also some apartments!

There's a TD Bank (formerly Commerce... am I the only one who gets sad when her bank changes names?) at 37th or 38th and Walnut, but they definitely don't have any Raleigh locations. Unfortunately, that's all I've got for ya!

PS, Do you need to have a UC location? I do almost everything online now anyways, and the ATMs at Wawa are free, if you were concerned about ATM fees...

thank you! 😳

i'm a PNC customer and they have ATMs in the wawa across the street, in the lobby of the hospital, in the cvs on walnut, and a branch on 40th and walnut. for what it's worth, they have excellent customer service. considering i've lost an ATM card three times in the past two years, i've dealt with them plenty! i don't know if they have raleigh locations though. there are a few wachovia locations as well, i think also on that same stretch of walnut, lol.

good luck on the apartment search! have a blast while you're up here, and please, please, please bring some sunshine with you!!

Wachovia!

I have a wachovia account and they do have a location in university city.

PNC is, far and away, the most convenient bank to the school. Emio mentioned it, but just to re-emphasize - they have an ATM in the vet hospital. And across the street at Wawa. And the branch is a couple blocks away.

There is an argument to be made for TD, though, which has a branch a few blocks from the school and is open on the weekend. Plus, I don't know if they kept the rules that Commerce Bank had, but Commerce used to allow people to bring their dogs in with them. They had treats and everything. So they've got that going for them.

and if you start in-state, you finish all 4 years in-state.

Sadly, not true. Yes, if you start OOS you're stuck OOS, but if you start IS, and move OOS, they kick up the tuition and there's no going back...

My husband and I are looking to buy and could get a better place for our $$ just over the bridge in NJ, but Penn said 👎

And I third that "yay" to Penn thread movement 😀

I don't have much to contribute here, but I want to keep this topic lively.

hm...

shanomog, How is life in philly? Found a house yet? Im going to be in philly on saturday for approximately 4 hours. I was going to message you, but I saw on fbook that you are gone for the weekend. Ah well.

Anyone else in philly on saturday want to grab lunch?

Oh my, I had no idea! Silly Penn. 🙁

And I will be in Philly on Thursday of next week looking for housing! So excited!

So (and I may be way behind on this) you decided to go to Penn! I remember there being some uncertainty due to your fiance? Guess that worked out?

And V...... Philly is wet. We've actually considered foregoing the home buying plan in order to put our money towards building an ark. What brings you out this weekend?

Looking at apartments once again. Im rolling into philly saturday afternoon, but I have to run back to nyc that night so I don't get disowned by my mom for missing mother's day.

I really should go to sleep, I have an orgo final tomorrow morning at 8am. How wonderful it is to already be accepted.

Orgo I or II? I know we need to know some of one of those at some point... 🙄

BTW, you and Emio crack me up.... prossibry the funniest thing I've seen all day. And good to know that porn jokes are acceptable.. I was going to say something about Philly being wet, dirty, and dangerous earlier but bitched out before posting...

What?! Just last week they emailed me with..
"No, your assumption is incorrect. You keep the residency status you had when you applied and when accepted. You were accepted as an in-state student and that's the way you stay. You will be billed as in-state no matter what your local address is."

I had assumed that living in another state would be out of the question, but just to be sure, I asked. Perhaps they see if differently if you are buying out-of-state vs. renting?? But if so, that really should've been explicitly stated. Who did you speak with?

Yep, I finally decided that I'm going this year... he is going to stay in VA to finish up a master's, and fingers crossed he gets into a Philly med school so it's only one year of long distance for us, and not 4 years if he gets in somewhere else!

Could that lower your expected family contribution on FAFSA?? Could be worth it. ahah. bad joke

Since my only hope of ever being financially successful is inheriting my parents apartment, I don't know if getting disowned makes the most long term financial sense.

Im not going to lie, I see the short term appeal, but Im trying to see the big picture.

Ashra! Who'd you speak to?? Here's the email she (she's a she right?) sent me:

"You must live and remain in the State of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the rule does not work in reverse --- your status as an in state student is based on the fact that you live and remain in Pennsylvania. We have had students with in state tuition who lived out of state, and have lost their in state tuition."

ETA: I just re-read yours, and yea it looks like owning vs. renting is the difference. Your email said "local address"; that assumes that your permanent address stays the same...

Soon to be 2nd yr. vet student seeking roommate for my 2 bedrm/2 bath condo. It's a great location-Walking distance to school. There is a gated courtyard, hardwood floors, carpeted bedrooms each w/ full bath & modern kitchen. You can check out pictures @ www.4300spruce.com. I have a cat. PM me if interested.

So Shanomong, you said in a different thread that Penn gave people scholarships to entice them into choosing Penn over a different school... but they have no need-based aid? According to the website there are no $5000 scholarships for first years - so is that like an under the table scholarship? I'm sure there is more to the story than I know but it just seems really unfair to people who are broke / only applied to one school.

To be honest, I heard similar stories at the beginning of the year about people in my class getting $ to chose Penn over Cornell or wherever. I was like "what the heck! I should get MORE $ for not even considering applying to Cornell!" Maybe its just some rumor that gets passed around year after year... who knows?

Hey guys. If anyone is interested in seeing the barn list that the equine club compiled, I can send it to you. Just PM or email me. I put my email up on your 2013 facebook page. Looking forward to meeting you all in the fall. Enjoy your summers!!

I'm not an expert on Penn's financial aid (wish I was!), I just happen to know two people who will be future classmates, and they both happen to have been offered $5000 scholarships, and they both happen to have applied to multiple schools.

I don't know what "more to the story" you're looking for... some people are offered what are presumably merit based scholarships, and some arent. It's my own assumption that they're used to entice... as for what's fair or not, I'm among those who would receive need-based assistance if there were any, and I'm more bothered by the fact that Penn felt no need to woo me than I am about the lack of need based aid... it's a private ivy league school, I don't expect them to supplement my tuition, I guess that's what the government is for... and other private scholarships.

Yeah, I guess you're right about the private school not offering need based aid thing, although a lot of ivy leagues have a lot of need based aid for undergrad. I guess the thing that bothers me is that their website lists we have x,y,z scholarships (the biggest for first years being 3,000) and then people are getting these unlisted scholarships. Why not just say we have 5,000 scholarships for first years that are merit based? It would still be frustrating not to be picked but I would just assume the people picked were more meritorious (is that a word?) than me and that would be that. This just seems tricky somehow. Also it seems to me that it would benefit Penn to list scholarships, because people that currently don't apply because of expenses might be willing to give it a shot. Anyway I am way overthinking this. Oh well.

I'm still hoping maybe there will be a surprise in the financial aid package.... 🙄

When should we be expecting those? I'm sure I knew at one point, but have since forgotten... And yeah I will admit to holding out some (probably foolish) hope.

You crazy optimists. Im more of a glass half empty sort of guy and Im just hoping they don't call me up this summer to let me know my acceptance has been revoked.

Come on Penn Thread! Come back to life!

Okay, so I was reading the (a little depressing) thread on the vet school forum about how some schools have, shall we say, a sort of tedious first two years w/out much animal interaction until clinics. I heard that the clubs are the way to go for hands on animal stuff at Penn, but what about that intro to clinical skills class? What is that class about?

Reviving the thread...

I just activated my @vet.upenn.edu email! So exciting! 👍

Sweet. Well Played tpad40. More importantly though, how did you find about that link? Was there an email I didnt get? or a letter I didnt receive?

So I'm moving to Philly July 1! I'm so excited. I'm trying to figure out what to do for those two months before school starts. Does anyone know of any temp / seasonal / summer jobs in the area? Animal or non animal ... I'd just like to make some money before going massively into debt!

And if I can't find a job I would like to volunteer and start getting a feel for the shelters and rehabbers on the other side of PA! Has anyone volunteered with PSPCA or another shelter? Any recommendations or warnings?

No, I sort of stumbled across it. I have been trying to figure out something useful I can do with my PennKey and browsing all around the website. I found the link after logging into the Campus Express page. 😉

Haha that's how I found mine too. No worries; we haven't gotten any emails beyond the "thanks for setting up your email" ones.

Crafty.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee that was fun!!

And Bunnity, you might want to check out Main Line Animal Rescue? They're a pretty big deal... we get a lot of their stuff in our hospital. They do a ton of puppy mill rescue, as well as pretty much taking every animal that comes their way...

Anybody else get an email asking which lender & guarantor to use for your Stafford loan application? Mine showed up this morning...

Nope, all I've gotten is the immunization record stuff, came today...

I got both the immunization and the loan thing today by regular mail. 🙂

Haha and I got neither! I'm on the other side of PA though so they'll probably be here tomorrow.

Ok, another semi-legit question...

How do I know which lender to choose? It seems like Discover is the best and Wachovia is the worst (both are in their own categories with the other 15 or so in a middle category). Why is Discover so much better? Is there a catch?

Here is the website they direct you to for selecting your lender.
http://www.sfs.upenn.edu/loans/lenders-graduate-Stafford.htm

Well some people really like loan fees, plus Discover takes your first born when you default.

ps. Thanks for the link, i haven't received my packet of info in the mail yet.
